SHAD 4 – Earnings Differences
We will be examining the differences in earnings for men vs. women and whites vs.
blacks. Let us do an assignment where everyone takes a different occupation and sees
what the differences are. Since you are old hands at data gathering by now, the
instructions are not going to be as detailed.
Think about an occupation that interests you. When you get to the last variable, just click
the box for that occupation only. The easiest way to do this is to (a) click on the select
button at the top left, (b) click on the Deselect button at the right of the screen and (c) just
click the button of the occupation of your choice.
10:00 Class
Using the 2007 March CPS, please select the variables for
 Sex
 Current status, labor force full/part-time status(use “2” FT hours (35+), usually)
(A_WKSTAT)
 Current job earnings, usually weekly amount (don’t forget to exclude those with
zero earnings.)
 Indus & Occup (main job) occupation coded (PEIOCCC)
You will now have those people who work full-time in the occupation that you chose.
The data are for both sexes and can be analyzed separately.
Please perform the analysis for the one occupation only.
1. What is the average weekly earnings of males who worked full time in this
occupation?
2. What is the average weekly earnings of females who worked full time in this
occupation?
3. What is the ratio of female earnings to male earnings in this occupation? Please email your occupation and the ratio to PATTI KREBEHENNE at
plkrebeh@owu.edu by 4:00 PM on Monday. Please put ECON 277 10:00 Class
in the subject line. The more people that can do this, the better the illustration
in class.
4. If for any reason you cannot gather information for the occupation you chose, select
another.
