Team Handbook 2014 Sandstorm Battle on the Beach Handbook 2011 Sandstorm Battle on the Beach Handbook 2011 Battle on the Beach Introduction Sandstorm’s vision is to be the global market leader in beach sports. An essential part of this vision is to create opportunities and pathways for every secondary school student and junior to play and get out on the sand. To this end we are very excited to offer the the Battle on the Beach Series. What is the Battle on the Beach. The Battle on the beach provides all secondary schools in the Brisbane Metro regions the opportunity to participate in beach sports they would otherwise not be able to access due to a lack of beach court facilities. Schools may nominate teams in multiple divisions, in one or all sports, for the chance to become the Champion School. Each school participating in the tournament will be awarded points for their team’s final position to determine the overall Champion School. Once the last tournament has been played and all allocated points have been tallied the Champion School will be presented with the 2013 Battle on the Beach trophy. It is very exciting to have the support and backing from sporting greats Natalie Cook 2.6 How do I register a team? Dimensions Court size: 8x16m Start of the Game Game begins by placing the Dodgeballs along the center line – three (3) on one side of the center hash and three (3) on the other Players then take a position behind their end line Following a signal by the official, teams may approach the centerline to retrieve the balls This signal officially starts the contest Teams may only retrieve the three (3) balls to their right of the center hash Once a ball is retrieved it must be taken outside of the dead-zone (middle of the court) before it can be legally thrown Once a team has been knocked out, the referee needs to circle 5 points on the scorecard next to the winning team. The game is then set-up again and another set is played The scoring system will remain the same as above until the final siren. As the siren sounds, count the remaining players on each team and write it in the corresponding box. Finally add the number of circled 5’s and the remaining players at the end of the final game and write the scores in the Total Points Semi-finals and Finals, in the event of a draw at the end of the game an additional 5 minutes will be played to reach a result. Dead-zone Team Composition Two teams, each team has a maximum of 6 players on the court at any given time Boundaries Players must never cross the dividing line Players may not leave the field of play, if so they are eliminated Only players that have been eliminated can retrieve stray balls outside the field of play In no case shall a player step into the deadzone (middle of the court) at any time after all of the balls have been retrieved x x o o x o x x o o ox Scorers Game Play First team to completely eliminate the opposing team wins To eliminate a player you must hit him/her with a ball or catch a ball he/she has thrown Once a player is hit he/she must sit on the sidelines for the remainder of the round If a teammate catches an opposing player's throw he/she may designate one teammate who is out to return to the game. The opposing player who threw the ball that was caught is then eliminated Returning players must re-enter the playing field only through their end line If you bump a ball (have a ball in your hands and bump off a ball thrown at you) it is play on. Scoring Proudly supported by: www.sandstorm.com.au Page 10 of 17 Appendix 6 – Beach Touch Rules Appendix 6 Beach Touch General Rules Dimensions •Field size: 20m x 30m •Scoreline (try line): 1m in from each end of the field Start of the game •Team captains will paper/scissor/rock to decide kickoff/courtside options. The game starts when the referee blows the whistle and one attacking player taps the touchball on the sand between the two (2) cones in the middle of the scoreline (try line). •Alternatively, the player tapping off can place the touchball on the scoreline, tap the ball with the foot, then pick it up and move forward. •The three (3) other attacking players must be behind the scoreline. •At the start of play and after each touchdown is scored, the 3 defenders line up on the halfway line. •The referee blows the whistle to commence play for each half, and also to recommence play after each touchdown is scored. Players should not tap the ball until the whistle is blown. Team composition •The attacking is permitted to have a maximum of four (4) players on the field at all times. The defending team is permitted to have a maximum of three (3) players on the field at all times. •There is one exception to this rule – when a defender intercepts the touchball, the attacking team (which now becomes the new defending team) may continue to have four (4) players on the field until the next touch is effected. Similarly, following the intercept, the new attacking team (previously the defending team) can also have four (4) players on the field. Scoring •1 point – The touchball is placed anywhere on or over the scoreline. •2 points – The touchball is placed between 2 cones in middle of the scoreline. •3 points - The touchball is placed on the blue cone, this is positioned over the try line in the attacking teams right corner, 1m in from sideline. Five touch rule The five (5) touch rule applies, that is, the attacking team has five (5) touches while in possession of the touchball. After the 5th touch, a change of possession occurs. A dropped ball by an attacker also results in a change of possession. Touchdown A touchdown is awarded to the attacking team when the touchball is placed on or over the scoreline. After a touchdown is awarded, the new defending team must retire to the halfway line. The new attacking team taps Proudly supported by: off from between the 2 cones in the middle of the scoreline. Touch A touch is defined as the minimum force required to affect a touch on a player's body. Attackers must return to the mark where they have been touched before doing a roll-ball. Roll-ball A roll-ball is, when ‘touched’, an attacker must roll the touchball backwards between the legs, but no more than 1 metre. Alternatively, the attacker may place the touchball on the sand and walk over it. A loss of possession occurs if the roll-ball is not performed correctly. At the roll-ball, the dummy half picks up the ball and continues play by either passing the ball or running with it. •When an attacker performs a roll-ball following a touch, the defenders must be back at least 3 metres from where the roll-ball occurs. Defenders offside at the roll-ball will be penalised or the referee can play the advantage to the attacking team. •When a roll-ball occurs, an onside defender (i.e. back at least 3m) cannot move forward until the dummy half touches the ball. If there is no dummy half in position at the roll-ball, an onside defender can move forward. The dummy half cannot baulk or delay picking up the touchball. If so, the onside defenders may move forward, subject to confirmation by the referee. •Attackers must not affect a roll-ball unless touched first. If a voluntary touch occurs, that is, performing a roll-ball before being touched, the attacking team will be penalised (i.e. the defending team receives a penalty tap). •In situations where an attacking team effects a quick roll-ball in an attempt to catch the defending team offside, and a defender is offside (i.e. not back 3m), the referee will play the advantage by allowing the attacker to continue despite being touched by the offside defender. If, however, the defender is making every attempt to get onside, that is, does not block the attacker or attempt in any way to slow down the play, and is touched by the attacker in possession, the touch will count). If the attacker in this situation is the dummy half, a change of possession will occur. Penalties Forward Pass: a forward pass by an attacker results in a penalty tap to the defending team. www.sandstorm.com.au Page 11 of 17 Appendix 6 – Beach Touch Rules Late pass: a late pass by an attacker (i.e. attacker passes the ball after being touched) is also a penalty tap to the defending team. Beach Touch General Rules (continued) Note: a pass is considered to be 'late' by the referee if: •The hands of the attacker carrying the ball have not moved past the middle of the body, and •The attacker is touched prior to completing the delivery of the pass. Acting half The dummy half may run with the ball after picking it up at the roll-ball. However, a loss of possession occurs if dummy half is touched before passing the ball. Also, if dummy half runs across the attacking scoreline while in possession, a change of possession occurs. Proudly supported by: Knock-downs Any knock-down of the touchball by a defender results in a handover to the defending team. If a defender deliberately knocks the touchball out of an attacker's hands, the attacking team receives a penalty tap (i.e. defending team is penalised). Intercepts If the touch ball is intercepted by a defender, the referee will call 'play on' if no touch is made. A player from the new defending team must then leave the field when the first touch is made. At the same time, an attacker can come onto the field of play. www.sandstorm.com.au Page 12 of 17 Appendix 7 – Getting to Sandstorm Beach Club Appendix 7 Getting to Sandstorm Beach Club Sandstorm Beach Club is located at the Queensland Sport & Athletic Centre (QSAC) on Mains Road at Nathan (formerly known as QE2 or ANZ Stadium).
