Summertime Gardening Workshop: Propagate your own plants
Thursday 20 August 2015; 10.00 - 16.00
This workshop can be booked alone, or those keen to learn about propagation can also book our
springtime gardening workshop.
Here at Turn End we propagate many plants to grow in the garden or sell on our nursery.
Join Turn End’s gardener, Jackie Hunt & horticulturalist Lindsay Engers, for this practical
and informal workshop that will introduce budding and enthusiastic gardeners to techniques
for propagating plants during the summer, autumn and winter. We shall explore:
1. How a plant’s form and means of growth informs suitable propagation techniques.
2. Equipment and materials used in plant propagation.
3. Cuttings that can be taken throughout summer including: semi-ripe nodal &
internodal cuttings; runners.
4. Planning ahead for autumn and winter including: collecting your own seed, autumn
seed sowing and identifying plants best divided in the autumn.
5. Propagation methods for later in the year including: mound layering; hardwood
cuttings; bulb propagation; stem bud cuttings; root cuttings.
By the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Have some understanding of how plant physiology informs propagation methods.
2. Identify a selection of plants suitable for stem, bulb and root cuttings.
3. Have some knowledge of the process of taking a range of cuttings and understand
which time of year to take cuttings.
4. Understand methods for sowing different size seeds.
5. Understand suitable compost and containers for seed sowing and cuttings.
6. Understand conditions for germinating seeds and growing cuttings.
7. Identify some plants suitable for division in autumn and understand the process of
dividing plants.
