CL 102 – Phlebotomy Syllabus Subject Description: This course will introduce the student to phlebotomy including basic Human Anatomy and Physiology, Anatomy and Physiology of the Circulatory System, phlebotomy equipment, and phlebotomy technique and safety. The challenges of phlebotomy including pediatric patients, psychiatric patients, resistant patients, and other challenging patients will be addressed. The student will learn customer service and patient compliance. Specimen considerations and preparation and handling, as well as special procedures will also be taught in this course. The student will learn the process of urinalysis including collection and handling, patient instruction, and testing. Subject Hours: 140 clock hours (65 hours lec, 75 hours lab) 6.5 Semester Credit Hours Performance Objectives: 1. Review and understand anatomy and physiology. 2. Perform capillary puncture & serology & hematology testing; screen and follow up test results. 3. Use methods of quality control in the lab and demonstrate proper documentation. 4. Perform medical asepsis. Perform venipuncture using the evacuated tube, syringe, and butterfly methods. 5. Collect and process blood, urine, and other specimen for testing. 6. Perform pediatric urine collection. 7. Perform male and female catheterization. 8. Understand and implement CLIA 88 and OSHA. 9. Library Research project. Student will be given weekly assignments for a grade. Assignments must be turned in no later than Friday for morning classes and Thursday for evening classes. 2. In addition there are 5 “obtaining lab specimen” to include the completion a lab requisition forms. Assignments for this phase must include no less than 40 successful veni-punctures (about 13 each of B/F, syringes and veni-vac combined) and 25 finger sticks to be eligible to sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician Exam. All must be recorded and signed off by the instructor ONLY in the student chart and their assignment sheet.
