AFTER a few beers at a nearby pub in July 2012, a Scotsman, an Englishman and an Irishman turn up at the gates of London’s Olympic Stadium wanting to get in – but without tickets. The Scot picks up a manhole cover, tucks it under his arm and walks up to the gateman “McTavish …Scotland …Discus”, he calls - and in he walks. The Englishman picks up a length of scaffolding and slings it over his back. “Waddington-Smythe …England …Pole Vault” – and in he goes, too. The Irishman looks round desperately and as a last resort picks up a roll of barbed wire and throws it over his shoulder. “O’Malley …Ireland …Fencing” he calls out. There is no record whether or not he got in. Mike.t-b@virgin.net: April 12, 2011.
