The unit aims to extend and deepen
students’ learning within TCE Legal Studies in
relation to the topics of Federalism,
International Law and Law Reform.

TCE Legal Studies
This unit will be delivered face-to-face at three
workshops and)
Results in
this unit will
not
contribute
to TE/ATAR.
Students will complete preparatory guided
readings and related online activities on
these areas in advance of attendance at
workshops designed to enhance students’
understanding and evaluation of the topics.
The workshops will comprise lecture(s) and
various follow-up activities (e.g. role-plays,
simulated parliamentary debates) aimed at
enabling students’ practical application of
fundamental principles and theories in
relation to the subject matter.

Demonstrate understanding of the core characteristics
of Australian Federalism, its pros and cons and how it
differs to other Federal models
Capacity to evaluate the historical development of the
division of powers in the Australian system
Demonstrate understanding of the importance of the
Australian Constitution in the federal system
Demonstrate understanding of the source of
International Law and the role of its key institutions
Capacity to evaluate the role and limitations of
International Law in maintaining order in international
politics
Demonstrate understanding of the conditions that give
rise to law reform including changing social values, new
concepts of justice and new technology
Capacity to examine and evaluate the role and operation
of agencies of reform, including law reform commissions
parliamentary committees, interest/pressure groups,
government organisations and media

This unit requires the completion of a UTAS Admission and Enrolment form and the Request for Commonwealth Support and HECS-HELP
