Reported on 8 Dec 10: Regional commercial radio broadcasters from around Australia met in Sydney on 8 Dec 10 to discuss the planning, timing and funding of the digital radio rollout in regional
Australia.
The broadcasters unanimously agreed on five key areas:
1) regional broadcasters, as a basic entitlement, to receive the same spectrum access and minimum non-compete period as the metropolitan broadcasters;
2) discussions to commence in 2011 with the Federal Government on funding for regional digital radio rollout;
3) the technology to form the backbone of regional digital rollout to be DAB+ in all towns and regional and population centers across Australia;
4) as detailed planning for the digital future is now underway, the Federal Government should place a moratorium on the issue of any new analogue radio licenses, at least until planning is completed;
5) detailed digital radio channel planning for regional Australia to be conducted in parallel with the analogue television switch off so that certainty can be provided to regional listeners and broadcasters as soon as possible.
Regional operators attending the meeting included ACE Radio, Grant Broadcasting, Resonate
Broadcasting, Bathurst Broadcasters, Hot Tomato, Southern Cross Media, Capital Radio, Prime Radio,
2SM/Super Radio Network, Red FM, Radio Outback, West Coast Radio, Win Radio North East
Broadcasters, Rich Rivers Radio and Radio Outback.
The industry will make a formal submission to the discussion paper reaffirming the commercial radio industry's often stated position that DAB+ in Band III VHF is the industry’s preferred technology for regional Australia, with technology for wide area coverage specifically in remote regional areas being considered at a later date once the planning for the DAB+ rollout is complete.
Detailed planning and timing of the regional rollout of digital radio will also give retailers and the automotive industry surety in the future of DAB+ in regional Australia.

Spain, Denmark, Belgium, Hungary, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland. Digital radio is also on test and trial in Croatia, Poland, Portugal, Ireland and Sweden.
The developments in Germany echo the development of digital radio in the rest of Europe where radio is the next digital frontier and the DAB family is the standard for Europe.
Reported on 21 Dec 10: Digital radio reached a major landmark in the lead-up to Christmas, as GfK
Retail and Technology announced that 12 million digital radios sold in total in the UK. Digital Radio
UK estimates that due to strong Christmas sales over two million digital radios would be sold during
2010, and that a cumulative total of 20 million digital radios will be sold by the end of 2013.
Retailers and manufacturers such as John Lewis, PURE and Roberts heralded the success of digital radio during Christmas and reported record levels of sales. The increase in digital radio sales is being driven by attractive new price points, digital radios with iPod docks, hybrid DAB/internet radios, and high levels of awareness and interest in digital radio following the Government's launch of the Digital
Radio Action Plan.
This milestone is part of building momentum for the transition to digital radio in the UK which is also evidenced by progress on cars, with the announcement that the UK's second best-selling car, the Ford
Focus, will come with digital radio as standard from March 2011; additional digital radio services from Absolute Radio and Kiss; and the move to digital radio in Europe, with Germany announcing the
2011 launch of digital radio using the DAB family of standards.
Reported on 23 Dec 10: A new campaign advertising digital radio is to run on Global, GMG, Bauer,
Absolute, UTV and Planet Rock radio stations.
UK analogue and digital radio stations are to get the benefit of a major advertising campaign for digital radio which is now standard in the new Ford C-MAX.
This is the first time that a car manufacturer has advertised standard digital radio as a major benefit to car drivers. The campaign running 3 January - 16 January features three different executions extolling the benefits of digital radio in the car.
Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM)
Reported on 8 Dec 10: The DRM Consortium announced the completion of a successful DRM+ trial and workshop in Sri Lanka from 29 Nov to 3 Dec 10. The Consortium is grateful to the
Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRC), the Sri Lankan Broadcasting
Corporation (SLBC), Germany’s international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle and the Asia-Pacific
Broadcasting Union (ABU) for all their assistance during the trial. The Consortium could complete its
50W trial using a low power station in Colombo made available by SLBC and their staff who gave their full support to the project.
The two-day DRM+ technical trial on 29 and 30 Nov, where signal strength and coverage data was gathered, was followed by a three-day workshop organized together with ABU. The workshop attracted over fifty attendees and was a ‘hands-on’ DRM30 and DRM+ event. Those present were able to learn more about the benefits of DRM and experience for themselves DRM 5.1 surround sound. They were also invited to observe the results of the DRM+ trial and to consider how this might provide a solution for Colombo’s congested FM frequency spectrum.
HD Radio (IBOC)
Reported on 13 Dec 10: NXP announced on 13 Dec 10 the availability of the SAF356x series, a flexible digital radio co-processor for car entertainment systems supporting DAB, DAB+ and T-DMB reception, as well as HD Radio. All standards are supported for both single- and dual-tuner applications. The SAF356x is the market's first multi-standard baseband processor for digital terrestrial radio systems, with software that can be modified to support additional features in the future, including standards such as DRM or DRM+.
As a multi-standard processor which can replace multiple ICs used in car entertainment systems today allowing future-proof design and software upgrade flexibility, the NXP SAF356x enables car OEMs and Tier One suppliers to reduce their total cost of ownership for digital reception systems.
The SAF356x is a digital radio processor that demodulates and processes digital terrestrial radio

NXP's leading radio/audio DSPs such as SAF7741 or its newest RFCMOS-based digital one-chip
TEF663x. As the leading baseband processor for HD radio in cars, the SAF356x series makes it easy for customers to also build DAB systems based on the same hardware, with the addition of a DAB tuner module and application of new automotive-grade NXP software for DAB, DAB+ and T-DMB for single- and dual-tuner applications with one baseband processor.
