1. require – v – to need something
 Traveling to Europe requires more money these days since the dollar is weak.
 I require my students to do homework.
 Some recipes require ingredients that are hard to find.
2. structure – n – the way the parts of something connect to form a whole
 In areas where there are earthquakes, buildings have to have structures that can survive a
quake.
 When I was in college, the structure of most of my classes was that the professor lectured and
students took notes.
 I don’t like the structure of my work days—I only work and don’t have enough time to rest.
3. consistent – adj –always happening in the same way
synonym = unchanging
antonym = inconsistent
 I found Quebec to be very consistent with the descriptions I had read in a travel guide.
 I try to be consistent in how I teach class so that the students know what to expect.
 Parents need to be consistent in making rules for their children.
4. resident – n – someone who lives in a particular place
 Parking on some Chicago streets is for residents only and you need a special sticker on your
windshield.
 The residents of my town are mostly Republican.
 A neighborhood is safer when the residents know each other.
5. survey – v – to ask people a set of questions to learn about their opinions or behavior
 Our school district surveyed the residents to see if they should build a new school.
 Every time I take my car to Jiffy Lube, I get a phone survey afterwards that asks if I was
satisfied with the service.
6. final – adj – last in a series
antonym = first
 In the final act of a tragic opera, someone usually dies.
 On election day, the final votes have to be counted before the winner is announced.
 The final thing I do before I go to sleep is turn out the light.
7. category – n – a group of people or things that are the same type
 My favorite category of books is mysteries. Another category I like is biographies.
 There are several categories of beer, such as ale, lager, weiss, and others.

8. layer – n – an amount of a substance that covers the surface or exists on or between other things.
synonym = level, tier
 A thin layer of ice covered the road and made driving dangerous.
 I try to wear several layers of clothes in the winter so that I can take off or add clothing
according to the temperature inside and outside.
 My sister made a cake with several layers of cake and cream filling.
9. element – n – one part of a plan or system
 There are three important elements in my lesson plans—my objective, the materials I plan to
use, and the practice activities I want the students to do.
 A key element of my job is to do training workshops for teachers.
 One element needed to end the war in Iraq is for the fighting to stop between the different
Muslim groups in Iraq.
10. coordination – n – the organization of people or things so they work well together
 The coordination of my uncle’s surprise party took a lot of careful planning so he wouldn’t find
out about it.
 My mother’s outfits are always beautifully coordinated, with matching accessories.
