Title
Cut off Saw, Cutting Discs as appropriate to the material to be cut, Petrol, 2
Stroke Oil Mixture, Fire Extinguisher, 1 to 2 Operatives as Risk Assessment
deems necessary, PPE i.e. Hard Hat with safety visor and/or goggles, HI
Visibility Jacket, Ear Protectors, Hi Visibility top and Hi Visibility Flame
Retardant Trousers or other suitable Flame Retardant protection for the
legs, Gloves and Safety Footwear.
Work Sequence

1.1
The cut off saw
Read all of the operating instructions before you use the saw
1.2
Petrol is extremely flammable. Take care not to cause a fire or explosion while using the saw
1.3
The saw is designed to cut concrete, masonry, asphalt, steel, cast iron and similar items using the
appropriate abrasive or diamond wheel. DO NOT USE IT FOR ANYTHING ELSE. Carelessness or misuse
could cause a serious or fatal accident.
1.4
This machine will damage property if it is not used carefully. Only competent and fully trained operatives
are to use cut off saws
1.5
Dust or sparks from your work can damage things nearby. Always be aware of your surroundings and plan
your work. Ensure that surrounding areas and other personnel / members of the public are not at risk as a
result of your activities
1.6
You must have:
 Face / Eye protection
 Safety Helmet
 Safety footwear
 Hearing Protection
 Dust mask – FFP3
 Approved Gloves
 Dust suppression kit
 A Fire extinguisher.
 Flame retardant protection for your legs, e.g. trousers / spats / coverall or an apron

2.1
Before Starting Work
Check your machine, engine and any additional equipment. Carry out a pre use inspection and record your
findings. Do not use a damaged saw - contact your supervisor / line manager immediately if the saw is
faulty or damaged.
2.2
You must have good ventilation or extraction to allow for the removal of any exhaust fumes
2.3
You must wear the correct PPE whenever you use a cut off saw. Be aware of anybody who is working near
to you as they will also be required to wear the same level of PPE
2.4
Protect other people from the noise and dust by using dust suppression and erecting barriers and screens
2.5
Make sure the area is clear and safe and that no-one is near to you or could distract you

Work Sequence
Any work to be done that is not part of a fixture should be secured
2.7
When fitting diamond wheels, you must comply with the direction of rotation mark on the wheel. Only
people who are trained and competent can change an abrasive wheel
2.8
Stop the engine before changing the cutting wheel.
2.9
Always make sure you use the correct type of cutting wheel for the material being cut.
2.10
The maximum rotational speed marked on your cutting wheel must be higher than the maximum
rotational speed marked on your machine
2.11
These saws are for cutting on the edge only. Any side pressure could shatter them.
2.12
Make sure the guards around the wheel are in place and adjusted correctly.
2.13
Always grip the saw correctly with two hands while using it.
2.14
Do not use a saw where there is a danger of explosion. It could ignite fumes from petrol or gas cylinders.
2.15
Make sure that you understand all of the controls of the saw you are using. Before you start the machine,
you must know how to stop it.
2.16
Flame retardant clothing must be worn to protect the lower leg from sparks. A fire extinguisher must be
readily available in the vicinity of the operation.

3.1
Refuelling
NO smoking while refuelling.
3.2
Use the correct mix of oil to petrol for the saw being used.
3.3
Stop the engine and let it cool down before commencing
3.4
If possible move the machine away from your work area.
3.5
Shake the fuel can to mix the petrol and oil.
3.6
Use a funnel. Do not spill any fuel on yourself or the machine.
3.7
Wipe any fuel off the machine. If you spill any fuel on your clothes, change them straight away.
3.8
Dispose of any fuel soaked cloth as hazardous waste.
3.9
If you spill any fuel on the ground, wipe it up or cover it with spill kit granules
3.10
Put all fuel caps back on properly, and move your fuel can to a safe, cool storage place.
Note! Do not use Cut Off Saws whilst in Cherry Pickers, on platforms or on ladders.
