Position No: 0166 Pay Range: 9 Date: September 14, 2009 POSITION DESCRIPTION CITY OF CONCORDIA POSITION TITLE: Wastewater Treatment Facility Lab Tech POSITION REPORTS TO: Wastewater Treatment Facility Plant Manager PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: This position is responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF), daily lab reports and analysis of samples, and may also assist the Water Production/Distribution and Wastewater Collection division of the Utility Department. Operate and maintain pumps, aerators, motors, valves, electrical generator, sampling equipment, laboratory equipment, flow meters and other process control equipment and facilities. Assist with the installation of new equipment as needed. May assist in conducting preventive maintenance programs on pumps, motors, and other related equipment. May assist in the preparation and maintenance of log sheets and records on equipment maintenance. Performs in the collecting of wastewater and biosolids samples at different stages of processing and assists with the analyses to determine pH, oxygen, settlable solids, etc. on a daily (M-F) basis. Perform custodial duties in all facility buildings and vehicles. Maintain WWTF grounds by mowing, weed-trimming, pruning, trash collection, etc. Perform other manual labor tasks. Haul biosolids and applies to farm ground. Work a rotating week-end and evening call-out. Attend training sessions on wastewater treatment methods, new technology, and environmental regulations and makes appropriate recommendations to the WWTF Manager. Cleans and unstops sewer mains. NOTE: Physical examination and drug screening tests will follow all conditional offers of employment. Other Functions 1. 2. 3. May be assigned to fill in for the WWTF Operator. May be called on to conduct WWTF tours. Performs other tasks as assigned by the WWTF Chief Operator and/or the Assistant Operator. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Work is of considerable difficulty and complexity. Must exercise judgement and make complex decisions involving matters of considerable importance; some of which will demand tact and diplomacy in maintaining positive relationships with regulatory agencies, the public, sales representatives and other City departments and employees. Considerable knowledge of WWTF methods and operations which must be obtained from specialized training and experience with WWTF's or other similar facilities. Considerable knowledge in the use and care of tools and equipment utilized at the WWTF. Knowledge of the appropriate safety procedures and practices. Considerable knowledge of WWTF machinery and mechanical equipment in order to detect flaws and defects. Some writing skills and arithmetic skills are required in order to complete WWTF records and reports. Some public speaking skills are required during WWTF tours. Required to be on call as listed on rotation schedule. Required to work overtime as necessary. Fulltime regular attendance required. EDUCATION, TRAINING, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE Equivalent of a high school education. Possess a valid Class C Kansas Drivers License and an established personal driving history that is acceptable for coverage by the City’s insurance carrier. Possess a valid Commercial Drivers License or the ability to obtain within one year. KDHE Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator certification at the Class III level is required within two (2) years of employment.
