Grand Knight Notes:
Brothers,
“We have a moral obligation to invite every eligible Catholic man to join the Knights of Columbus.” This
statement, from our Supreme Knight, Carl A. Anderson, should serve as our mission statement. If we believe
in our four principles – charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism as well as our support of the Church, we need
to share our brotherhood. We need to tell every eligible Catholic man about the Knights and invite them to
join our organization. We did a good job of this last year; however, we must continue doing this year after
year.
I learned Wednesday, August 14, that we have earned the Double Star Award from Supreme. We are one of
333 councils worldwide and the only council in Tennessee to have earned this honor. I want to thank all of
you that worked so hard last year to earn this honor. I also want to thank our Insurance Agent, Kevin Van
Dusen, for his hard work in signing up our Brother Knights for insurance coverage needed to earn the award.
In other good news, Supreme has sent us a check for $400.00 to begin this year’s Food for Families program.
One hundred dollars will go to Mountain City Roundtable and $50.00 to the Erwin Roundtable based on the
amount of food they collected. The remaining $250.00 will stay in Elizabethton.
Our August Council meeting consisted solely of the installation of Council Officers for the 2013-2014
Fraternal Year. The meeting followed our monthly Mass for Vocations; and the Installation was conducted
by our new District Deputy, Greg Chudzik. We held a social (serving pizza and soft drinks) in the Church
Hall after the Installation.
We have been asked to collect clothes and shoes for Mountain Home VA Medical Center in Johnson City.
The Center is always in need of clothing items for patients – both men’s and women’s. I have checked with
the Center and found out that clothing and shoes need not be new; but, must be clean and in good serviceable
condition. All sizes are needed. I will be coordinating with the Fourth Degree Assembly and the other
Councils in our District to seeking their help in collecting clothing and shoes.
Our new Financial Secretary, George Bratton, and I attended the 2013-2014 Fraternal Year Kick-Off Meeting
for East Tennessee on Saturday, July 27 at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Lenoir City. The State Officers
and Directors did a good job of presenting information needed for this year’s programs and reporting
procedures.
Our Semi Annual Council Audit Report (Form 1728) and The Service Program Personnel Report have been
submitted to Supreme by August due dates.
We still need to complete the fix-ups here at the Church. Two doors need to be painted and the iron railing
also needs painting.
There three upcoming activities that you need to put on your calendars:
1
1. On Saturday, August 31, we will try to complete the St. Elizabeth Church fix-up items that we started back
in May. Major items include painting exterior doors and iron railings. If you can help, please plan to join us
starting at around 9AM.
2. The St. Elizabeth Parish Picnic will be held on Sunday, September 15 from 4 – 7 PM. We have been asked
to once again do the cooking of the hamburgers and hotdogs.
3. Our annual Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities i.e. the MR/“Tootsie Roll” Drive will be
held on first weekend of November (November 1(Friday) – 3(Sunday)) at the Elizabethton Wal-Mart. We
will need everyone’s help!

Round Table Reports:
St. Michal the Archangel Roundtable – Erwin
Gary Laun, the Roundtable Coordinator, reported:
St. Michael the Archangel Roundtable will meet Thursday, September 12 at 6 PM at the Parish House (1700
Jackson Love Hwy, Erwin); and, will have a dinner before the meeting. The Roundtable just finished a
Pancake Breakfast in support of our Parish Youth Group. With our assistance and their own efforts, the
group as raised the funds needed to attend the Catholic Youth Conference to be held in Indianapolis. The
Roundtable continues to have a monthly fish fry; assisting the parish in providing a meal for migrant workers
on the day they arrived in the area to begin harvesting; and, performing maintenance and grass cutting at the
Parish House and property on which the Church will be built.
St. Anthony of Padua - Mountain City
Robert Back the Roundtable coordinator sent in the following report.
St. Anthony of Padua roundtable will meet Sunday, September 15 following the 11 AM Mass. This past
month the roundtable supplied children of the parish with a backpack and all the supplies on their school
supply list for the new school year. We also did seven backpacks for needy community residents. We
obtained the correct supply list by grade from the schools that the children were going to and purchased the
supplies they needed. Our parishioners helped with this program by providing five backpacks, school
supplies and $80.00 in cash donations. The roundtable spent an additional $380.00 to complete the project.
We also designed a back to school prayer to give with the backpacks (see below) and our deacon recited the
prayer during Prayers of the Faithful during Sunday Mass. Backpacks were handed out after Mass and a lot
of praise, thanks and tears were shared. This was a great event to help our parishioners and we look forward
to doing it again next year.

For Your Health:
Fight Off Belly Fat
Belly fat can be a bellweather for the long-term health of men, WebMD Magazine reports. “The waistline is an
important vital sign,” says Dr. Steven Feinleib of the Cleveland Clinic. “It may be a better indicator for
diabetes and heart disease than overall weight or body mass index (BMI).”
He says fat buildup in gut can harm the body’s ability to handle insulin.
To avoid the accumulation of belly fat, Feinleib advises men to reduce their calorie intake. They should also eat
more vegetables, fruits, lean meats, grains and healthy sources of fat, including salmon, and spend 150 minutes
per week on “heart-pumping” workouts.
The above article is from (The American) Legion August 2013 magazine pg. 14.
Surprising Diet Foods
WebMD has good news for dieters: Some foods that have gotten a bad rap can actually help you lose weight
and keep it off.
 Eggs have come under fire in a cholesterol-obsessed culture, but new research suggest that “an egg a
day is safe and nutritious for most adults – and if you eat that egg for breakfast, you’ll boost your odds
of losing weight. The reason: Eggs are packed with protein, which takes time to digest.”
 Cholesterol concerns also steer many away from red meat. “But steak is not always bad for the
waistline. In fact, a lean cut of beef has barely more saturated fat than a similar-sized skinless chicken
breast.” But WebMD experts add an important caveat: “To get plenty of protein with less fat, choose
tenderloin, sirloin or their extra-lean cuts – and limit portions to the size of your palm.”
 “Today’s cuts of pork tenderloin are 31 percent leaner than 20 years ago. That makes this white meat a
lean source of protein with benefits similar to those of lean beef.”
 “Rather than avoiding pasta when you’re dieting, make the switch to whole grain and keep your
portions small.”
 Many dieters try to trim calories by cutting out dairy foods. But this may be counterproductive: “one
theory is that the body burns more fat when it gets enough calcium, so eating low-fat cheese, yogurt and
milk may actually contribute to weight loss.”

How To Cut The Risk of Heart Disease
You can’t change some risk factors for heart disease, such as family history or age. But there are ways to
reduce risk:


Don’t smoke. If you do, quit. Women who smoke and take birth control pills are a greater risk of
having heart attack or stroke than women who do neither.
Get regular exercise. At least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week reduces the risk of
heart disease.
4



Eat heart-healthy. Focus your diet on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy. Limit
saturated fats (found in red meat, dairy, coconut and palm oils) and trans fats (found in fried foods,
bakery items and packaged snack foods).
Maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight increases you risk for high blood pressure and high
cholesterol.
Get regular health screenings. Know your blood pressure and cholesterol (blood fat) levels. If your
numbers are too high, talk to your health-care provider about how to reduce them.

Knights of Columbus Insurance: Your Shield for Life.
$90 Billion Strong
Thomas P. Smith Jr
Chief Insurance Officer
If you follow our website (www.kofc.org), you have seen recently the news that the Order
surpassed $90 billion of insurance in force. When our Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson,
took office, that number was $40 billion—which makes the achievement all the more
remarkable.
Insurance operations are lovers of numbers. In fact, given enough time, I can put a room full of people to sleep
with percentages and net gains and pie charts. With PowerPoint presentations, we can even make the numbers
spin and grow, as well as add color and cool font styles. In the end, chances are you’ll still be drowsy.
So why would I dedicate a column to a number? Because this number is critical to your understanding of the
mission of the Knights of Columbus; and, the vision of Father Michael J. McGivney.
On March 29, 1882, the amount of insurance in force was zero. The movement up from zero was really the
dream of Father McGivney, with every dollar collected as protection against a family’s disaster seen as
progress. He was determined that no widow would be left in despair.
As the Order began to grow, and the insurance program grew with it, so did the amount of coverage in force. It
was June of 1961—79 years after the founding—before the $1 billion in force mark was achieved. Think about
that: 79 years to reach $1 billion, and just over a decade to go from $40 billion to $90 billion. Why? What
changed?
Well, certainly our membership grew, and the awareness of the membership grew as well. But there is more to
this story.
It has become clear to our members that our products are not just good, but that they are among the best in the
industry. We have more agents today than ever in our history, and they are better trained and better prepared to
serve you than ever. The construction of a program that is “by brother Knights, for brother Knights” brings
with it a sense of genuine concern and protection that you just can’t get anywhere else. And a customer service
focus that allows our clients to get answers to their questions from their agent or a qualified customer service
representative here in New Haven – but always from a real live person. That’s the kind of business model and
commitment that results in the tremendous growth we have had. That’s the kind of record that Father
McGivney would be proud of. It is $90 billion of real money, ready to be delivered at the time a family needs it
the most. So it’s a quick pause to celebrate $90 billion … and then it’s on to 100!

THOUGHTS: (Taken from Knights to Christ, Daily Devotions for Knights seeking Christ published by
the Knights of Columbus).
CHARITY is paying the price of a legacy: A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed
is better than silver or gold. ~ Proverbs 22:1.
UNITY is salvation for our children: Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of
their children. ~ Proverbs 17:6.
FRATERNITY is a father’s affirmation: Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become
discouraged. ~ Colossians 3:21.
PATRIOTISM is leaving the world in good hands: Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that
you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach
them to your children and to their children after them. ~ Deuteronomy 4:9.
Quotes:
“Now, we take up this journey…A journey of fraternity, of love of trust.” Pope Francis
“Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your
unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for
you to do.” Pope John XXIII
