Dear Candidate, The 2016 election is one event that the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community has been waiting for with much anticipation. The Stonewall Democrats of Dallas (SDD) would like to extend you an invitation to interview for an endorsement from our organization. Because of the crowded field of candidates this cycle, Stonewall Democrats of Dallas will be interviewing candidates on three days: Contested primary races will interview Saturday, January 9th and Saturday, January 16th, 2016. Uncontested primary races will interview on a day sometime between those dates with some on those two Saturdays. The third date will be announced before the deadline to return completed questionnaires – Monday, December 28th. Stonewall Democrats of Dallas is one of the most active Democratic organizations in Dallas County, boasting more than 250 paid members. Over two dozen members are precinct chairs, members of the State Democratic Executive Committee, and election judges. Stonewall Democrats of Dallas screens candidates regarding their positions on issues that are important to the LGBT Community and Democrats countywide. We have included our questionnaire in this envelope or email. The SDD wants to identify candidates who believe in equality and fairness. After our endorsement meetings in early January , we will publicize our endorsed candidates to our membership and the LGBT community via a media campaign which includes: Newspaper Advertisements, Newsletter Articles, Website Posting, Press Releases, Monthly Voter Registration/Education Booths, Special Event Mixers featuring Endorsed Candidates and Get Out The Vote Rallies. In the 2008 Presidential election, 77 percent of LGBT voters cast ballots for a Democratic President. This past mayoral election, LGBT precincts in Oak Lawn and Oak Cliff neighborhoods out performed those in all other Dallas neighborhoods. We have proven to the progressive community that we can bring out the vote and make a difference in the election outcome. This is especially true during close elections such as in 2006 and 2010 when several judges won by less than 3 percent margins. Stonewall has registered nearly 5,000 voters in the last two election cycles and has successfully worked to educate the community about the importance of voting in every election and to vote all the way down the ballot. If you are interested in seeking our endorsement, please fill out the questionnaire and return it postmarked or via email no later than Monday, December 28th. You can return a digital copy of a signed, completed questionnaire via email to political@stonewalldemocratsofdallas.org , or a paper copy via mail to Stonewall Democrats of Dallas, PO Box 192305, Dallas, TX 75219. NOTE: Remember to fill out the signature portion at the end of the questionnaire. For digital submissions, you can sign a completed paper version of the questionnaire and scan that document into a .pdf that you can attach to a return email or type “XX” on the signature line in the Word document and return that attached to an email. (continued) Candidates who complete the questionnaire and return it by Monday, December 28th are invited to come before the Endorsement Committee starting Saturday, January 9th, 2016. The Saturday primary interview sessions will take place at Sue Ellen's upstairs gallery, 3014 Throckmorton Street, Dallas, TX 75219. These interviews will run from 9:20am to 5pm. The doors open at around 9am. There will be also an uncontested primary interview session on a day sometime between those dates with some uncontested primary interviews on those two Saturdays. The third date will be announced before the deadline to return completed questionnaires – Monday, December 28th. Each candidate’s time slot will consist of up to 2 minutes of introductory remarks by the candidate, followed by up to 8 minutes of questions and answers. The Endorsement Committee will vote on all races with candidates seeking endorsement by the conclusion of the endorsement screening interviews, with endorsement being determined by a simple majority. Runoff voting for endorsement is possible. If a simple majority cannot be ultimately obtained for a particular race, SDD will not endorse in that race. The Endorsement Committee will offer a slate of endorsed candidates for all races seeking endorsement to the Stonewall Dallas board for cursory review, and then to the general membership at the next general meeting for formal ratification. The general meeting with the ratification vote will be on Tuesday, January 19th, 2016. Cannon Brown & Tracy Clinton will schedule candidate slots throughout this process starting Thursday, December 26th. They may be reached at political@stonewalldemocratsofdallas.org or either Tracy at 214801-4346 (text or call) or Cannon at (901) 634-1365 (text or call). Please make contact as soon as possible after December 26th to discuss scheduling conflicts for the interview sessions. SDD will NOT be conducting interviews for endorsement in contested races outside of the two Saturday sessions. If you are not able attend in person, please send a representative. Our guidelines require that a candidate must: Be someone with a Democratic voting history or submit a signed Oath of Affiliation for the Texas Democratic Party. Answer the Stonewall Democrats of Dallas questionnaire to the best of their ability and return it by the deadline. Request the endorsement by signing the bottom of the returned Stonewall Democrats of Dallas questionnaire. Be present (or have a representative present) at the endorsement screening meetings to answer questions from the membership. If a candidate cannot fulfill all four requirements, then that candidate will not be endorsed by the Stonewall Democrats of Dallas. Thank you for seeking public office and we look forward to hearing from you, Jay Narey President, Stonewall Democrats of Dallas jay@stonewalldemocratsofdallas.org
