I consulted with Questar to develop requirements for a secure online survey application with extensive administrative tools. I designed and built the application and database using Macromedia Cold Fusion and Microsoft SQL Server 7. The survey system allows for full visual customization for other businesses that our client deploys this site for. It accommodates several types of users with different menu options depending on their roles. Surveys can be presented in multiple languages as well, with most content driven from a database. The administrators use a secure Web site to collect the applicant’s data, modify various aspects of existing surveys, add/edit/delete users, and build new surveys, all through a Secure Socket Layer with 128-bit encryption. Administrators also have different menus and functionality depending on their roles. There are also administrative functions that our client can enable for their customers’ use. Data harvesting is via downloadable files formatted to merge directly into our client’s backend legacy systems. I have worked closely with Questar to develop enhancements for this application during the past three years. There have also been new related projects using similar technology, but serving different market segments for Questar. There has also been a new project allowing our Questar’s customers to order custom reports via a browser interface. “I really appreciate your dedication to understanding and solving client problems in such a timely way.” (Dan Keyport, Questar) Client: Role: Minnesota Council for Quality Information Portal, Document Management System, Content Management Implementation Met with client to determine needs, designed site architecture and determined toolset for development and server software. Designed custom solutions for: document repository, event portal, website (links) repository, and a rating system for each (1 through 7 stars plus user comments). Built site in Dreamweaver MX, and set up Macromedia Contribute content system using Dreamweaver templates. Used Macromedia Cold Fusion MX, custom tags, custom-designed user-designed functions (UDF), JavaScript validation, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and DHTML (dynamic HTML menus). Performed end-user training for Contribute. Client: Role: City of Eden Prairie Content Management Implementation; Training Met with client to determine needs, and coordinated with software publisher (Ittrium) to customize their content management application (Origo). Modified JSP’s to implement custom graphics design into content-driven templates. Worked with XSL to control content delivery, style, and layout. Formatted and converted client content for proper web display. Delivered the site from concept to live rollout in 60 days as per the contract terms. Client: Role: TCF Mortgage Developer/Team Lead Worked directly with the client to recommend and implement the most cost-effective solution for a totally secure environment where customers may submit online mortgage applications. For our client’s David Werden, page 4 administrators, the application notifies them via email when a new application is waiting. The administrators use a secure Web site to log into and collect the applicant’s data through a Secure Socket Layer with 128-bit encryption. Without user intervention, the program moves loan applications to a backup folder after harvesting, where they remain until they are automatically purged after two weeks. An email is sent to an administrator upon submission of an application, so there is no need to check the Web site constantly. Administrators can also set up one “black out” period for each day, which is a time during which the Web application is unavailable. This enables the client to update the rate schedule as interest rates fluctuate. During this process, the administrator can upload an Adobe Acrobat PDF file to the Web site to display all the rate information. These well-integrated features combine to make it possible for our client to perform their daily business activities through the Web site even though their users have very little technology experience. The application uses Macromedia Cold Fusion and stores secure information to a protected server folder. “You're terrific, thanks.” (Karen Ryan, TCF Mortgage) Client: Role: Fairview Hospitals Project Manager / Developer Helped Fairview develop specifications for an Intranet site with an employee directory. Assisted in gathering and converting data from a wide variety of outlying clinics and offices. Coordinated procedures among various participants so employee privacy policies were honored during all stages. Developed SQL database, stored procedures, and Macromedia Cold Fusion scripting for the final application, which had a user interface and an administrator interface. The product was completed with consistentlyformatted data consisting of approximately 18,000 individual entries. Benefits included centralizing a wide body of data for ease of future maintenance, and reducing ongoing printing and distribution costs of the previous printed directory. Client: Role: United Health Care Lead Developer Client had just designed a new Intranet site and needed an incentive/promotional program to encourage employees to discover the new Intranet and to use it. The client chose a baseball theme and created several sets of quiz questions and answers about baseball and the client’s company. I designed and developed an application that presented users with a different quiz each day for the one-week promotion period, let them take each survey one time only, scored their results in real time, and displayed their results along with the cumulative average for all others who took the same quiz. The application was built with Microsoft Active Server Pages and an Access database. Client: Role: INTxx Product Development – Search Engine Visibility Services Developer/Team Lead I researched and developed the procedures and knowledge base for INTxx’s Search Engine Visibility service. I used my 20 years of experience in search algorithms to develop a service that helps our customers’ web sites appear near the top of searches in the most popular search engines. I determined specifications and pricing, and designed and produced marketing materials to evolve this custom service into a suite of five products. Client: Role: Bachman’s Wholesale Nursery Developer/Team Lead Team Lead during development of an Extranet site enabling existing customers to browse inventory and place orders online. I also developed a browser-administered mass-mailing tool that can broadcast emails to their customers. Emails are configured as HTML but are compatible with text-only email clients as well. David Werden, page 5 “I have really appreciated how responsive you all have been when we have needed a tweak or a fix. … You're the greatest, Dave! Thanks much!” (John Daniels, Bachman's Wholesale) Client: Role: Fairview Hospitals, Online Education Developer Developed a browser-based tool for building quizzes on specially-developed training materials that our client purchased. The tool I developed featured the ability to build a complete quiz by specifying each question, its list of answer choices, and the scoring parameters. I also developed a compete set of browser-based reporting tools for our client’s administrators to use, showing number of users signed up for the system, number who have completed the quizzes, and the scores they achieved, enabling our client to judge the progress and effectiveness of the system and the training materials. Client: Role: Norcraft Cabinets Developer Our client needed a suite of simple tools to maintain their database of dealers and distributors, download the dealer database for import to their backend systems, and collect information submitted via Web forms. I also developed a Web tool that allows potential customers to search by Zip Code for the nearest dealer. I helped the client determine the most cost-effective solution, built a set of browser-based administrative tools, and programmed the Zip Code proximity tool and its algorithms. Tools used were Macromedia Cold Fusion and Microsoft Access. Client: Role: Cyberoom (In-Room Internet Portal for the Hospitality Industry) Developer/Team Lead I designed and built the sotware application that drives an in-room hotel application, portal to the Internet, and management tool. Coded the Macromedia Cold Fusion scripts and Microsoft SQL database that drive the guest program and the hotel maintenance application. The application accommodates both national and local content. It allows the appearance and content to be personalized for each location where it is installed. I also developed JavaScript menu effects and animations, and built a browser-based management tool for adding and modifying links. Client: Role: Verifications, Inc. – Employee Background Investigation Company Developer/Team Lead Project lead for this company’s Web site, which includes a client-only area for reading online security and background checks. The application uses Macromedia Cold Fusion to pull data from our client’s existing Sybase database and produce nicely-formatted Web pages, suitable for printing. Also incorporates a time-of-day check to disallow data access from midnight to 1AM – issues a ½ hour warning with JavaScript, then redirects the user to a different page during the blocked time. The project also included converting many of the client’s materials into Adobe Acrobat documents, so that the documents are presented on the Web with all their formatting intact. Extensive formatting of the HTML Web forms so they more closely match the client’s printed forms. Client: Role: Hines Minnesota – Commercial Real Estate Company Developer/Team Lead I worked with Hines project leaders to develop requirements for a web-based property information tool. Developed a data-driven application to display property information using Macromedia Cold Fusion and Microsoft Access. Potential renters can view general building information, space availability, floor plans, and projected operating costs for each of their several properties. Browser-based management tool for easy maintenance of information by our client’s employees. Subsequent phases included an application to automatically manage Web cam files that are uploaded to our server. The application places the newest one on the Web site and archives the previous files. David Werden, page 6 Client: Role: Pro-Fit International – Automotive Accessory Manufacturer/Distributor Developer/Team Lead Added dynamic features to this company’s main site to enable customers to locate the nearest dealer. The customer enters their Zip code, and our application searches through a database of 76,000 Zip codes and 3,000 dealers, performs algorithms to compute mileage to each, and returns a list of the 6 closest dealers. Developed using Macromedia Cold Fusion and Microsoft Access, plus a subscription to a 3rd-party Zip code database subscription. Second phase added functionality so that a dealer could see new documentation and products and download nicely-formatted spec sheets. Businesses that wish to become dealers can fill out an online form to be considered as an official dealer. Client: Role: Northwestern Communications – Regional Utility/Communications Company Developer/Team Lead Developed an Intranet site for the Collaboration Team’s members consisting of 3 sections. The first section contained resource information including an employee directory and a calendar. The second section was devoted to the project teams and the projects they were working on. It consisted of a simple document management solution. The third section focused on the community. Phase 2 expanded on the community section to include: a news section with recent industry information, company information, local information, FAQ area, and feedback form. This project included development of Reusable Modular Solutions as well as customizing and adapting 3rd-party products, all using Macromedia Cold Fusion and Microsoft SQL Server. Client: Role: Greene Holcomb & Fisher Application Developer Developed the portion of this web site that displays the “tombstones” of previous transactions, driven from a backend database. We also included a browser-based administration tool to allow our client to easily add/edit/delete transactions. Tools used for this portion of the site were Macromedia Cold Fusion and Microsoft Access and Front Page. Client: Role: The Bergquist Company Developer Developed a search engine for their Web site that searches through all the HTML pages as well as the Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files. Results are displayed with a ranking system indicating how closely the page/file matches the search term. Developed using Macromedia Cold Fusion and the Verity search technology. A separate phase involved converting many of their specification sheets from Acrobat PDF files into HTML pages to enable simpler and quicker display where exact page layout was not critical. Client: Role: Viking Electric Supply Developer/Team Lead Consulted with Viking Electric to determine requirement and scope for a Web site with a fresh, professional look, which would allow their dealers to easily find information about products they carry, and to offer a convenient channel to their vendors’ sites for more complete information on products. Helped them refine their requirements into a cost-effective solution. Developed a full set of dynamic pages that merged a graphic intensive interface (from INTxx’s Graphic Design Department) with datadriven information. The site uses a backend database to display current job openings, locations of the client’s storefront locations, and a hierarchical view of their line cards. Tools used were Macromedia Cold Fusion and Microsoft Access and Front Page. Trained our client’s personnel in using Microsoft Front Page, Microsoft Access, and the browser tools to administrator the live data on the site. David Werden, page 7 Client: Role: Diversified Distribution Systems - Wholesale Distribution Company Developer/Team Lead Client is a distributor of “consumable” goods (items that are used and discarded, such as plastic cups, various office supplies, and a large inventory of logo-personalized items) for their various customers, including Fortune 100 companies (including Target/Dayton and Northwest Airlines). I led the team to develop an application that would enable DDS customers to log in and see a site personalized the customer’s company, including logo, color scheme, and news items. The customer could order online, and the items they could view and the prices were customized for each customer via a backend database. The order form had two modes: a “power user” mode, where experienced users could enter just the quantity and part number in order to make the process as quick as possible, and a “search/browse” mode, which enabled less-experienced users to easily find the part they required. We also developed browser-based administration tools with interfaces for DDS and for their customers to use to update news items. Client: Role: Corporate Health Systems – Employee Benefits Consulting Firm Accessibility Consultant Our client was concerned that their site should be accessible to people who were vision impaired. I researched the appropriate standards and converted the client’s existing web site so it became compliant with the existing accessibility standards. Identified and repaired several significant barriers to access by individuals with disabilities, so that the resultant site earned acceptance by the Center for Applied Special Technology (the Bobby Award). Client: Role: Sioux Nation Agriculture Developer/Team Lead Developed a Web site and Intranet based on a customized solution using preexisting templates. The site was customized to include a custom design, a dynamic specialist section, and a secure Intranet area for their employees. The Intranet consisted of an employee directory, bulletin board and email. Substantially modified two 3rd-party products to fit the needs of this customer. This project was developed using Macromedia Cold Fusion and Microsoft SQL Server. Client: Role: United States Coast Guard Academy Staff: Division Computer Manager Responsible for operations, procurement, and training for one department of this 4-year college. Programmed various custom applications. Converted a collection of official U.S. Department of Transportation documents into Macintosh-compatible format. Developed training and support staff. Client: Role: Whaling Music Publishers Freelance programmer Developed custom user interface and complete application for order entry, inventory, accounting, customer management, and shipping. Designed custom disk-management application to meet needs of more storage space on floppy disks required by client hardware. Converted a BASIC program into a dBASE-III program, and converted original proprietary data format to standard relational database. In subsequent phases I added an online database of music titles, random banner displays and tracking, and other active functionality using JavaScript, Dynamic HTML drop-down menus, XML and XSL, Macromedia Cold Fusion, Microsoft Active Server Pages, and a Microsoft SQL Server 7 database. Seamlessly integrated a 3rd-partly search engine tool into the look and feel of the existing site.
