By-law review TRAVERSE CITY IN FALL This year’s annual conference of MCA was held in the beautiful hills of Traverse City at the Grand Traverse Resort. Again this year, MCCA hosted a hospitality suite for all participants of the conference. To help celebrate MCCA’s 10th anniversary there was a drawing held and denim shirts were given away to four lucky winners. The winners were: Winner’s names Will Gasper – Shirt Cheryl Dove – Shirt Brian Williams – Shirt Suzanne Hobson – Shirt Linda Piippo - Clock There were over 50 visiters to the suite during this hospitality time and the suite became a drop in site to watch the sunset and to network with other attendees. Don’t miss next years hospitality as we all attend MCA conference in Grand Rapids. Please take a few minutes to look at some of the pictures found on page 5. Maybe you will see yourself there. WEB PAGE We are looking for a volunteer that knows something about web pages. Someone that might know how to go about getting a site to be published on the web, and the best way to go about getting a site established. (Finding a host site) There is a start, but it is in need of some tech savvy person to give it some tender loving care. PRESIDENT ELECT Donna AustinDonna received her master's degree in Counseling in Higher Education from Western Michigan University in 1995. She previously worked for Kellogg Community College and Glen Oaks Community College and is currently the director of the federally funded TRIO program, EXCEL (Student Support Services) for Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac. Students served through this program must meet the federal guidelines of first generation and/or low-income or disabled and have an academic need. They must also show some potential for success. Donna is busy planning an exciting spring conference and hopes you will all come to beautiful southwest Michigan on May 19th. TREASURER-ELECT James Wohlcott A previous leadership role involved serving as MCA Membership Chair for 2002-03. James is currently employed full-time at Lansing Community College as the Student Employment Coordinator. Prior to joining LCC, he worked as an academic advisor at Oakland University in Rochester, MI and as a student services coordinator at Western Nebraska Community College. James completed his M.A. degree in counseling in higher education from Western Michigan University in 1996. SECRETARY Adriana Fox- MA, LLPC Adriana Fox is a doctoral student in the Counselor Education program at Western Michigan University and serves as secretary for MCCA. Her primary interests are counseling 4-YEAR PUBLIC COLLEGE MEMBERAT-LARGE Will Gasper – MCCA Fall 2005 Newsletter Page 3 Will Gasper completed his MA in Dec. 2004 from CMU and works at Ferris State University as the Grounds Supervisor. Will also is an adjunct instructor in the University College, working with undecided students looking to make a choice in their career direction. In his spare time, Will also works for a local agency, counseling and working with its drug and alcohol clientele. Will is married to Patti, his wife of 27 years; they just built a new house in LeRoy, and have 3 grown daughters and 5 wonderful grandchildren. Will enjoys hunting, and fishing and household projects as time allows. RETURNING THIS YEAR PAST PRESIDENT Tyrone Collins Tyrone is currently working at Ferris State University as an admissions counselor. In this job it keeps him on the road quite a bit doing recruiting. He has worked at Ferris for the last 27 years. He earned his B.S. from Ferris State University in Public Administration and his M.A. in Counseling - Higher Education from Central Michigan University. GRADUATE STUDENT MEMBER-AT-LARGE Shaunda Jimmerson I am a student member of the MCA and the Graduate Representative for both the MCCA and MCDA. I am pursuing a Master's degree in College Counseling from Eastern Michigan University and am currently in a full- time internship at Schoolcraft College, working in their counseling center and career planning and placement center. TREASURER James Lucka, Treasurer Jim works for Montcalm Community College at the Sidney, Michigan campus. As a counselor there, some of his duties include; Testing (Career/Interest Testing & Interpretation), GED Chief Examiner, Transfer Advising, General Advising, Brief Personal Counseling, Curriculum Committee member, MCCA Fall 2005 Newsletter Page 4 Liaison with senior institution transfer admission contacts, Sometime new student contact, Contact representative for several private scholarship offerings for transfer students, Liaison with faculty to identify, contact and meet with students having poor attendance/academic difficulties, Counselor/advisor to academically dismissed, returning students, to Displaced Workers linked to Michigan Works, Referral source, gatekeeper, etc.... Jim is a very busy man! 4-YEAR PRIVATE COLLEGE MEMBER-AT-LARGE Christine Brant Chris has been employed by Madonna University as the Director of Career Services for 20 years. She is a LPC with a Master’s degree in Guidance in Counseling from Oakland University. 2-YEAR COLLEGE MEMBER-AT-LARGE Kareen Monton Kareen has been with the Student Services Department at West Shore Community College since 1989. In 1995, she completed her MA in Counseling and became the Career Counselor at WSCC. She has earned the National Certified Counselor, National Certified Career Counselor, Master Career Counselor and Distance Credentialed Counselor certifications. In addition to counseling responsibilities, she supervises the Women’s Resource Center. Kareen and her husband Tony live in Pentwater where they enjoy sailing, walking the beach and skiing. PRESIDENT Christina Deland Christina is a counselor at Lansing Community College. She serves primarily At-Risk students. These are students who place into developmental and ESL courses or as a result of failure to make satisfactory academic progress, and students with learning disabilities. She was one of the key people involved in developing the Critical Incident Response Team at Lansing Community College in 1998. She along with a colleague wrote the training manual and conducted on-site trainings for her peers. She also teaches in the Student Development area at L.C.C., teaching MCCA Fall 2005 Newsletter Page 5 Elimination of Self-Defeating Behavior, Stress Management, and Empathy Skills Training. Christina has completed the Graduate Certification Program at WMU in Holistic Health. Christina served as the registration chairperson for the 2003 MCA conference held in Lansing, and is currently the secretary-elect of MCA. BY-LAW UPDATE Your executive team has been working very hard to update the by-laws of MCCA. This project was started under Tyrone’s leadership with the assistance of then, Past-President Carol Quigley. It is now ready for your review. We have included a DRAFT copy in this newsletter.
