GENERAL NEWS:
Around FRHS:
1. Seniors will receive local (Ft. Recovery) scholarship applications this month in World History class.
2. Any student who wishes to take an AP Exam must submit their payment of $51 per exam to their AP teacher
by March 20. Fee reductions are available to those who demonstrate financial need. (A handout with more
details was distributed to all AP students on March 1.)
3. If you would like to be considered for the FRHS Outstanding Service Award this year, log forms (with yellow
cover sheet) must be turned in to the HS office no later than April 1.
4. Need a prom dress, and can’t afford one? There will be a "Don't Stress Over the Dress" event at the
Findlay Village Mall on March 8 and 9. FREE prom dresses will be available and DONATIONS (dresses,
jewelry, shoes, etc.) are currently being accepted. Pick up a flier in the HS office or contact Chris Edwards for

Job Opportunities:
5. The public is invited to the LIMA CAMPUS SPRING JOB FAIR 2013. This event is hosted by Ohio State and
Rhodes State College: Thursday, March 21, 2013, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Public Service Building Lobby).
6. A Mercer County Farm is looking for a FULL TIME employee. Duties include: grain farming, livestock
management (turkeys, hogs), and a CDL will be required. The family would like an ambitious young person
who has a love and passion to make agriculture his career. See Mrs. Kaiser or Mr. Hawk for more
information.
7. A local construction company would like to hire someone for part-time construction help this summer. See
Mrs. Kaiser if interested.

11. All students who plan to go to college should take a college entrance exam. An ACT (or SAT) test score
is a requirement for admission to many colleges and universities. Most colleges accept either the ACT or the
SAT. FRHS students usually take the ACT (1-3 times). STOP BY THE GUIDANCE OFFICE AND PICK UP A YELLOW
INFORMATION SHEET, INFORMATIONAL FLYER, AND A PRACTICE TEST PRIOR TO REGISTERING! (IEP/504 students
requesting extended time must see Mrs. Kaiser 2 weeks prior to the registration deadline.)

13. ACT Prep Courses:
 Edison Community College and Sylvan Learning Center offer classes to review math and English
skills, test taking and time management tips, test questions and practice problems. The classes usually
meet 6 weeks prior to each ACT national test date.
14. Need counseling? I have lots of information on private counseling services in the area…just ask!
Summer Opportunities:
15. The Joyce Ivy Foundation is looking for high-achieving female sophomores or juniors who would benefit from
a scholarship to attend a summer academic program at an Ivy League or equivalent college. Since 2005, over
70 young women in Michigan and Ohio have been named Joyce Ivy Summer Scholars, enabling them to spend
between two and eight weeks studying under faculty at leading institutions including Harvard, Brown, Yale,
Columbia, Penn, Johns Hopkins, and Smith. Students are encouraged to apply for this great opportunity.

16. Ohio University Summer Start Program for high seniors beginning at OU in the fall. Session 1 begins May
13 and session 2 begins July 1. Accepted students will receive $1000 credit. For more information, visit

17. Wright State: Residential camp in a variety of majors (Science, Theater, Creative Writing, Forensics,

18. University of Dayton Summer Honors Engineering for HS freshman, sophomores, and juniors is June

COLLEGE AND CAREER INFO:
21. College and Career Fair at St. Marys High School: Tuesday, March 19 from 7-8:30 p.m. – over 50
businesses, colleges and universities will be represented. Learn about the military, employment, and education
opportunities. Students and parents are encouraged to attend!
22. Are you interested in a career in skilled trades? Many of these careers do not require a college education.
Contact your local businesses and ask about their apprenticeship and training programs!
23. West Central Ohio Workforce Development Initiative offers 10 week courses to become certified CNC
machinists and welders. There is an immediate need in this area for manufacturing jobs and skilled workers.

24. Students attending WSU-Dayton campus: a locally-owned property is available to rent near WSU. Please

25. Attention Juniors: Many allied health programs (nursing, dental hygiene, radiology, etc.), have preadmission requirements (i.e. observation hours, specific coursework) and waiting lists. Make an appointment
with a college advisor to learn more about the admission process and ask if you should apply in the spring of
your junior year.
26. Military recruiters visit FRHS (and homes) throughout the year. For additional information about a career
in the military, visit http://todaysmilitary.com/careers.
 Attention Juniors: Thinking about attending a military academy after graduation? You might want to
attend a Summer Seminar to see what life as a cadet is all about. Go to the website of the academy of
your choice and look under “Admissions” for more information.
27. Prospective College Athletes who plan to play Division I or II sports must register with the appropriate
clearinghouse. Both eligibility centers require that test scores (i.e. ACT) be sent directly from the testing
agency. SEE MRS. KAISER IF YOU NEED TO REGISTER WITH EITHER OF THESE ATHLETIC
CLEARINGHOUSES! Cost is approximately $65.

 Another good website is www.voluntarysystem.org It gives you statistics about many colleges across the
nation. These are great websites to help you narrow down your choices!
 http://www.college.gov/wps/portal was designed by students for students, and features first-person
accounts of students who have overcome challenges such as peer pressure, lack of family support, and
financial barriers, to go to college.

30. Application advice:
 If you choose to complete a paper application: Any/all applications you complete should be done in
INK (or typed). Do not use pencil—appearance is important.
 Don’t wait too long to complete your applications! You never know when school will be delayed or
cancelled, so ask for letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc., well in advance!
 OBEY DEADLINES!
31. FAFSA: All seniors planning to attend college this fall should file the FAFSA online at: www.fafsa.gov (Free
Application for Federal Student Aid).
32. If you are interviewing for a Midwest Electric, Darke-Rural Electric, Touchtone Energy, etc. scholarship,
students MUST provide Mrs. Wenning with a copy of the letter they receive stating their interview date and time
to be excused from school.
33. Imagine America Scholarship for 2013 graduates: FRHS can select up to three students to receive this
$1000 scholarship—FRHS will award this to the first 3 eligible students who apply each year. Only recent high
school graduates who are qualified applicants and who meet the following recommended guidelines should
apply: Likelihood of successful completion of postsecondary education, high school grade point average of 2.5
or greater, financial need, and demonstrated voluntary community service during the senior year Students
must plan to attend a “career college” (such as Lincoln Tech or Kaplan) to be eligible. Students should visit
the website for more information and a list of participating schools. Apply online at www.imagine-america.org.
34. 2013 BioOhio Scholarship: BioOhio again will award 4, one-time $1,250 scholarships this year for soon-to-be
Ohio freshmen. To be considered for a scholarship, the student must live in Ohio, be a senior or seniorequivalent in good standing, and plan to pursue bioscience-related studies at an Ohio
college/university. Applications can be found at: http://www.bioohio.com/working-learning/BioOhioScholarship/Application-2013.aspx. Deadline for applications is March 12.
35. Lincoln College of Technology Scholarships:
 2013 High School Select- a $1,000 guaranteed tuition scholarship to a senior from FRHS (Tri-Star also
can award a $1000 scholarship). Applications are due to Mrs. Kaiser by March 13.
 Students take a scholarship test when they visit Lincoln Tech for additional awards
 Apply for the Imagine America scholarship (see above)

36. Technical Majors: Midmark Corporation is offering one Technical Scholarship to a graduating high school
senior from Darke, Miami, Mercer, Auglaize and Shelby county school. The scholarship is worth $20,000 and
comes with summer employment opportunities and a full time position after the completion of their degree.
There is a three year work obligation after graduation at Midmark. Eligible students must be pursuing a
Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following areas: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical
Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, and Management Information Systems
at an accredited four-year institution. Deadline for scholarship applications is March 15.
37. Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship is for kids ages 6-12 and 13-18 (2 age groups). Winners are chosen
based on the benefits of their volunteerism and will receive $1000 scholarships or $50 Kohl’s gift cards. Visit
www.kohlskids.com for official rules. Nominations will be accepted through March 15.
38. Charles L. Warren Memorial Heritage Scholarship: No more than three applicants from one school will be
considered for this scholarship. Students must have a 3.0 GPA or better and must also plan to attend and Ohio
college or university. To be eligible students must demonstrate financial need (i.e. free or reduced or lunch or
fee waivers). Applications can be found at http://www.oacac.org/news/2013-Charles-L-Warren-MemorialHeritage-Scholarship-application-.cfm and are due March 15.
39. WTLW/WOSN TV scholarship – WTLW and WOSN TV are awarding a $1000 scholarship to a future
communications major. Any high school senior who plans to attend a post-secondary educational institution
and pursue a degree in any type of communications field is eligible. Areas of study include: broadcast
journalism, public relations, graphic design, print journalism, business or corporate communications, or any
type of mass media. The application must be received by March 15.
40. The University of Dayton is offering up to $40,000 in scholarships for video submissions that tell about your
future: What’s your plan? How will you make your mark?, etc. Visit www.facebook.com/universityofdayton/ for
more information. The contest is open February 1 - March 15.
41. Leitzell Family Foundation Agricultural/ Horticultural Scholarship Award (Grade 12): It is the intent of this
scholarship to provide financial aid to any individual from Mercer County, Ohio who shows continuous interest
and enthusiasm in the field of agriculture or horticulture. Such interests could be manifested through active
participation in such programs as 4-H, FFA, Scouts, etc. and must be continued into secondary education in
appropriate career-oriented programs. The initial scholarship will be $2500 and may be renewable. The
recipient must maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA on a 4.00 scale for renewal. Applications must be
returned to the FRHS Guidance Office by March 18.
42. DARE Scholarship: Mercer County DARE Boosters will be awarding several $350 scholarships to seniors.
Two scholarship winners planning to attend WSU-Lake Campus will receive an additional $350! All seniors
who have remained true to their DARE promise (not to use drugs or alcohol) are invited to the annual
DARE luncheon on April 16, 2013 at the Elks Club of Mercer County—see Mrs. Dilworth for more information.
Applications for the scholarship are due by March 21.
43. Males entering OSU-Columbus in the fall 2013 are eligible for the “Better Man Scholarship” ($1000). The
Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity sponsors this award for men who excel in leadership, extracurriculars,
achievement, and have an interest in Agriculture. Recipients are not obligated to join the fraternity.
Applications are due March 22.
44. BP Scholarship (females, grade 12): The Fluorine Chapter Scholarship Committee will be looking for young
women with a profound interest in chemistry and those who can convey their commitment to science. Award
recipients will receive an initial $1,000 cash award and a Certificate of Recognition. An additional $1,000 will
be given the second year based on demonstration of continuation as a science major in an Ohio university and
maintaining 3.0 or better GPA in the major. There is also a $300 award available to women with an interest
in physical sciences. These are lengthy applications, so apply early. These applications must be typed, and
electronic copies can be requested by emailing Jennifer Williams at: AmbitiousChemist@Gmail.com. Deadline
is March 22.
45. The QuestBridge College Prep Scholarship is available to HS juniors. Through a single application,
students can access multiple opportunities, including full scholarships to college summer programs at schools
like Harvard, Penn, and Emory; invitations to our College Admissions Conferences at Northwestern, Stanford,
and Yale; individualized college admissions counseling, and more. View all of the awards here. The online
application is available at www.questbridge.org, and it is free to apply. FRHS had a student use this program
in the past, and he received substantial amount of scholarship money through the QuestBridge program.
Applications are due March 27.
46. South Shore Sportsman Club Inc. will offer two renewable $500 scholarships to high school graduates or
college students pursuing a field in conservation and/or wildlife management, or fields related to these
vocations. Applications are due March 31.
47. Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship: Student must have a 3.0 GPA, plan to attend a 4-year college, and
demonstrate leadership/community service. Parents’ combined income cannot exceed $100,000. Applications
are due March 31.

48. The University Women’s Club of Mercer County has 2 programs available for females planning to continue
their education in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree:
 Annual Scholarship Loans for $700 (renewable for 4 years) Repayment of these interest-free loans
begins one year after termination of college.
 Annual Scholarship Grant for $1000
Only one application is necessary for both programs. Call Kelly Hone at 419-852-2117 if you have questions.

49. Building Industry Association of Central Ohio: Open to students majoring in building, architecture, financial,
design, marketing, communications, and many others in the business community. More information can be

50. Mercer County Retired Teachers: This scholarship is open to students majoring in education (2 or 4 year
program). Applicants must have a G.P.A. of 2.8 or higher and demonstrate financial need. Applications are
due April 1.
51. Western Ohio Bluegrass Association is awarding 5 scholarships to seniors who plan to major or minor in
music at an Ohio college or university. Applications are due April 1.
52. William D. Squires Scholarships: The William D. Squires Scholarship is primarily need-based and is only for
students from Ohio. (Each applicant must have an EFC (from FAFSA/SAR) of less than $8,000.) A minimum
GPA of 3.2 is required. Applications are available at: www.wmdsquiresfoundation.org. Deadline for this
scholarship is April 5.
53. Mote & Associates Scholarship (Greenville, Ohio): The scholarship is for a commendable student seeking a
post high school education or enrolled in an accredited college program in the field of engineering, surveying,
architecture, or a closely related field of study. Applications can be completed on-line at
www.moteassociates.com; or may be requested by contacting the company at 937-548-7511. Applications
must be returned to the office of Mote & Associates, Inc., 214 West Fourth Street, Greenville, Ohio by April 5.
54. Mercer County Farm Bureau Scholarship: High school seniors entering college (or college freshman
entering their second year) in the fall majoring in Agriculture are eligible. Parents of the applicant must be
members of the Mercer County Farm Bureau in good standing. A $500 scholarship will be given and student
must maintain a 2.0 GPA for the quarter/semester. Applications are due by April 12.
55. The Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools (in conjunction with the Ohio Legislature) is awarding
over 400 scholarships to 2013 graduating seniors. These awards range from $2,000-$44,000. Applicants must
plan to attend one of the specific career-technical colleges listed on the application (Art Institute of Ohio, Brown
Mackie ITT, Lincoln Tech, Miami-Jacobs, Kaplan, Virginia-Marti, etc.) to be eligible for these scholarships. All
are associate’s degree or diploma programs…see Mrs. Kaiser for a complete list of degree programs and
schools. Deadline is April 15.
56. Wright State University has extended the Academic Performance Scholarship Deadline to April 15. The
Academic Performance Scholarships are part of the First-Year Scholarship program. Not only is the deadline
extended, but this year they changed the criteria. If a student has a least a 22 on their ACT and a 3.0

57. C.R. Meyers Memorial Scholarship ($1000): Applicants must be (or will be) enrolled in a major relating to
environmental sciences or environmental education at an accredited Ohio college, university, or technical
school. Applications can be found at www.oalprp.org (left hand side—near the bottom) and are due April 15.
58. Gordon Orthodontics, Greenville is offering a $1000 scholarship to HS seniors who are or were previous
patients. Application deadline is April 30.
59. Rhodes State Scholarship Opportunities:
 “Rhodes to Success” Achievement Scholarship application is available in the guidance office
Requirements include a 3.5 GPA and/or 24 ACT composite. Priority deadline is December 14, but
applications will be accepted until May 1.
 “Associate of Arts and Sciences Scholarship” is available for students who plan to attend Rhodes and
then transfer to another college or university for their bachelor’s degree. Requirements include a 2.8
GPA and/or 21 ACT composite. Priority deadline is December 14, but applications will be accepted until
May 1.
 “Tech Prep” (Tri-Star, PLTW, Ag) graduates are also eligible for a $1000 Tech Prep Scholarship. These
awards are renewable for all tech prep students who complete their first year at Rhodes with a 3.0 cum
GPA or higher.
 STEM Scholarship for seniors planning to pursue a degree in Information Technology or Engineering
Technology: deadline is July 13, 2013 (for fall semester) and December 6, 2013 (for spring semester).
60. B. Davis Scholarship ($1000): This website was developed solely for the purpose of helping students locate
and apply for scholarships: http://www.studentawardsearch.com/scholarships.htm. Deadline is May 27.

61. US Bank Scholarships: U.S. Bank will again award up to forty $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors
planning to enroll next fall at an eligible four-year college participating in the U.S. Bank No Fee Education Loan
Program. Scholarship award recipients are selected through a random drawing process. Further details,
including college or university eligibility, can be found on the website. Students can apply online at:
http://usbank.com/scholarship now through May 2013.
62. Aspiring Animation Professional Scholarship Program ($1000): Open to seniors who: intend to pursue an
animation related field at an accredited post-secondary school or college. Visit the website for more
information: www.animationcareerreview.com, and search “scholarships”. Deadline to apply is June 1.
63. Aspiring Pharmacy Technician Scholarship Program ($1000): Open to high school seniors. Visit
http://www.pharmacytechnicianreview.com/. The application link can be found on the right side of the page.
Deadline to apply is June 1.
64. The Mercer County Civic Foundation has a small pool of student loan funds available to undergraduate
students. These low-interest $900 college loans are renewable, and the 4% interest rate does not begin to
accrue until 6 months after graduation from college, and are interest-free if repaid within that time. Interested
students should call Glenn Hux at 419/586-9950 for an application. Applications are due by June 1.
65. Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants Scholarship: To apply for this $1,000 scholarship you will need to
write an essay on the topic found on the website. The A&F Scholarships are available to all high school juniors
and seniors as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post secondary institution who are
between the ages of 16 and 30. More information can be found at
http://www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm. Registration deadline is June 14.
66. BigSun Scholarship: The BigSun Organization is offering a $500 scholarship to a student athlete. The
successful applicant will be a high school senior participating in a sport OR be attending a post secondary
institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution. Visit our website at
http://www.bigsunathletics.com to learn how to apply. Deadline is June 21.
67. AES Engineers Scholarship ($500-open to all majors): Applicants must answer one of the essay questions
from the website at http://www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm. Their belief is that achieving a high grade
point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. For that reason they
are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluating the
essays that are submitted. Deadline is October 4, 2013.
68. American Legion Scholarships: Students can access the Need A Lift? College and Financial Aid Handbook
online at www.needalift.org. This catalog lists scholarships, grants, and loans. It also contains extensive
information on scholarships for veteran’s dependents.
69. The University of Findlay is offering $3000/year for 4 years to students who plan to major in math education
through the Austin E. Knowlton Foundation. Call 1-800-548-0932, or email admissions@findlay.edu if you
have any questions.
70. 4-H Scholarships: Ohio 4-H offers a variety of scholarships to its members—most of these being for current
year graduates and a few for members already attending college. The application and information is available
on the Website at http://www.ohio4h.org. Click on the 4H for Youth>Teens>Awards & Scholarships. Check the
website for more details and deadlines.
71. Loans for Future Medical Students: The Medical Educational Foundation Academy of Medicine of Lima and
Allen County is offering no-interest loans to assist with tuition while students are in medical school. If

Remember: you should never pay to apply for a scholarship.
