I. DRESS CODE
All nursing students are expected to project a professional image. Unless otherwise
specified, the following guidelines must be adhered to during all clinical practicum
experiences and/ or on campus experiences. If a nursing students reports for clinical
practice or skills lab, and is not in keeping with the dress code, the student will be sent
home from clinical or skills lab and this will be recorded as a missed clinical day. If the
student reports to the classroom and is not in keeping with dress code, the student will be
given a written student referral form for noncompliance to dress code.

All students will wear white scrubs/uniforms and white lab coats with the Baker
patch on the left breast pocket of each. All items of uniform clothing must be neat,
clean and pressed. In settings where scrubs are not appropriate, street clothes
may be worn. The attire required for each setting will be clearly communicated to
students prior to clinical experiences.

White scrubs/uniforms and white lab coats will be worn for skills lab and
clinical practice.

Failure to comply with dress code will result in a student referral form to the
Director of Nursing.

A name tag identifying the wearer’s title and status as a Baker College nursing
student is worn at all times.

Shoes: White, rubber-soled shoes that are clean and in good repair are required.
Clogs, sandals, and open-toed shoes are not acceptable.

Hose: white hose with uniform dress or white socks with uniform pants or scrub
pants.

Hair and Nails: Hair must be neat, clean and off the collar with no loose ends that
hang forward. Beards, sideburns, and mustaches must be neat and trimmed.
Large decorative hairpieces or ornaments are not acceptable. Nails must be neatly
trimmed to a length that will not interfere with safe hygienic nursing care and at the
discretion of the Director of Nursing. Acrylic nails are not acceptable in any clinical
settings. Nail polish must be clear.

Jewelry: Small post earrings that do not dangle, a wedding band and a plain
second hand watch may be worn. To ensure safety and proper hygiene, other
jewelry is not permitted.

Body piercing jewelry or decorations that are visible are not acceptable.

Tattoos must be covered
II. Clinical Practice Requirements
All required health data must be submitted by the stated deadlines or new students will not
be admitted into the program. Returning students must submit health data by the stated
deadline. Please note, all health data, for all students, new or returning must be
submitted on the specified date or access to clinical will be denied!
*** FLU Vaccines – Most hospitals in the area now require nursing students and staff to
obtain an annual flu vaccine. This requirement will be enforced to enable nursing students
at Baker College of Allen Park to be placed for clinical rotations. Failure to meet this
requirement may result in loss of clinical placement and failure to meet the course
objectives. Flu shots can be obtained at your physician’s office, local health department, or
most local pharmacies.
III. Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) and Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA) Training
BBP and HIPAA Training will be accomplished via computer based training on campus
and/or within each clinical facility.
IV. Basic Life Support (BLS) Training
Must be updated each year regardless of expiration date on card.
V. Email Communications
Nursing faculty and staff at Baker College of Allen Park will only accept and
respond to email communications generated from the Baker College server.

Food Service
Facilities are available for faculty and student dining. The cafeteria is open 6 days a week
and serves a variety of hot meals, sandwiches, salads and beverages. Food vending
machines are located in the student center.
Parking Specifics
Students are to use the proper exits to Outer Drive. Students should only park in student
parking areas. Students parking in any other marked parking area will receive a parking
ticket. Please maintain the posted speed limits and abide by all other posted signs.
Class Policies
Guests and Visitors
Baker College encourages visitors at any time. You are welcome to have parents, relatives,
or friends visit the College. If you have friends or relatives who may be interested in
attending Baker College, we invite you to show them our facilities however; visitors are not
allowed to sit in any NUR class or lab. Visitors must register at the Academic Office.
Children are not allowed on campus.
If a visitor needs to contact a student, he or she should first come to the Academic Office.
After the visitor provides identification, the students will be contacted by Campus Safety.
Telephone Calls
Students will not be called out of class for telephone calls unless there is an extreme
emergency. Emergency messages will be taken to the students scheduled classroom.
Students may us the pay phones to make any personal calls. Pay phones are located on
the lower level of the “A” building at the main entrance.
Lost and Found
The College cannot be responsible for articles either lost or stolen. We ask that you take
special care of clothing, textbooks, etc. We suggest that items of great value be carried with
you are all times.
If you lose an item, check to see if it has been turned in at the Campus Safety Office
located on the lower level of the “A” building.
Food and Beverages
Food and beverages are to be consumed in the Student Center only. Food and beverages
are prohibited in any classroom. Bottled water is allowed in the classrooms.
Smoking on Campus
Baker College of Allen Park is a smoke-free environment. Tobacco is prohibited anywhere
in the building. The smoking area is clearly marked in a location near the Student Center.
There is no smoking allowed within 25 feet of any building.
Whom to See For Assistance
Admissions Office: New student’s applications, new student financial aid application, and
new student career information.
Academic Office: Add/Drop, withdrawals, scheduling, and advising.
Financial Aid Office: Financial aid (loans, grants and forms) and college work-study.
Campus Safety: Emergencies, parking permits, lost and found, computer classroom
access, auto battery jumps, and lock cuts.
Career Services: Graduation, placement, internships, externships, and career information.
Business Office: Payments, refunds, and bookstore.
Snow Day Procedures
If Baker College of Allen Park declares a snow day, a text message will be sent to all text
message subscribers. School closings and emergency announcements will also be posted
to the Baker College Web site at www.allenpark.baker.edu. We will announce the school
closing by 7:00 a.m. for day classes and by 4:00 p.m. for night classes.
Please do not call the College for school closing information.

I have received the Baker College of Allen Park Nursing Program Handbook
2011-2012. I understand that I am responsible for the information it contains
regarding the Nursing Program.
I further understand that it is my responsibility to contact an advisor or
program director if I have any questions regarding admission into, remaining
in, or re-entering my program.
I agree to abide by the policies and requirements as stated in this handbook.
I understand that I must abide by the professional ethics and standards
accepted by professionals and technicians in my individual career choice.
Confidentiality of health care information is a must. Dress code, personal
conduct, and professional attitude will be addressed by individual program
directors.
I understand that I will need to undergo a criminal background investigation in
order to enter and complete the Nursing Program. I further understand that a
criminal background check and fingerprinting will be required by the State of
Michigan prior to taking the NCLEX-RN licensing exam
