PRESS RELEASE – For immediate release Les Coups de Théâtre 2014: A snapshot of the most imaginative, youth-oriented stage productions touring on national and international circuits 16 companies from seven countries will grace Montreal stages from November 16 to 23, 2014 Montreal, Wednesday, June 11, 2014 — From November 16 to 23, Les Coups de Théâtre, festival international des arts jeune public will present the 13th edition of its biennial event at numerous Montreal venues. Rémi Boucher, the festival’s Founder and Artistic Director, has invited sixteen companies from Québec, Acadia, Mexico, France, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands to unveil their productions for the very first time in the Americas. Children (as young as four years old), teenagers and families alike are invited to discover a thrilling program that taps into a vast pool of unhinged theatre – theatre of the body, spoken theatre, object-based theatre, of the wooden/clay/rag puppet, musical theatre, dance, video, cinema, plastic arts and new technologies. Seventeen extraordinary productions with decidedly contemporary storylines will be given state-of-the-art scenic treatments when they are presented in their World, North American or Montreal premieres. Bold creators and artists of all stripes – authors, directors, set designers, choreographers, composers, visual artists, performers – have whipped up stories expressly designed for a young public and bursting at the seams with imagination and inventiveness, some of which are fresh out the oven! These will take on the form of poetic or philosophical fables, fanciful and at times burlesque fairy tales, trashy and satirical comedies or heart-pounding adventures with countless twists, featuring characters forced to confront themselves, the ‘Other’ and the world. For those with the most voracious theatrical appetites, certain protagonists will even sit at the dinner table to awaken all of our senses and our critical eye! In addition to the stage productions and artistic activities offered to young audiences and families, a number of related activities aimed at performing arts professionals and emerging artists will also be held. Meetings, conferences and workshops will take place during Les Coups de Théâtre 2014. A Map of the Festival The 2014 edition of Les Coups de Théâtre will come alive at a number of partner venues around the city: both stages at Usine C, the Arène and the Ring stages at Théâtre Aux Écuries, the Théâtre Rouge du Conservatoire, the Studio Jean-Valcourt du Conservatoire, the MonumentNational’s Studio Hydro-Québec and the Maison de la culture du Plateau-Mont-Royal. Les Coups de Théâtre, the premier event showcasing youth-oriented works from local and international creators A major international event held biannually in Montreal (on even-numbered years), Les Coups de Théâtre has contributed to the enrichment of children and youth-oriented arts and culture since its foundation in 1990, all the while deepening young audiences’ appreciation for the performing arts and new artistic practices. A unique space for discoveries, encounters and reflection, Les Coups de Théâtre has evolved into an unparalleled artistic event in the Canadian landscape. With the quality, boldness and diversity of its line-up, it champions the inclusion of practices geared for a young public into the broader realm of international dramatic arts. The Festival Les Coups de Théâtre hosts its event in Montreal, in parallel to the International Exchange for the Performing Arts (also known as Conférence internationale des arts de la scène, or CINARS), which also affords companies the opportunity to present their latest works to many curators from Canada and abroad, hence encouraging the dissemination of their productions on national and international stages. Since 2012, Les Coups de Théâtre has also contributed to the Focus Québec event, a window on the world of youth theatre in Quebec. Youth theatre buffs, consider yourselves warned! From November 16 to 23, Les Coups de Théâtre invites you to sink your teeth into its 2014 crop.
