Frame Project (Candide)
Directions: For this project, you will be working in groups of two to create and present a
lesson from the novel/story/poem. The actual presentation will be done using materials
from this class or from your own resources, but other elements will be necessary to
ensure a successful lesson/presentation (i.e., a print out of notes for students to use to
follow along, etc.). Again, the professional appeal of your presentation will count
significantly toward your final grade. It is your responsibility to make sure that each
group member contributes equally to the final product and you will be receiving both an
individual and group grade for this project. However, each student is responsible for
his/her own frame.
Reading 3.2: Analyze the way in which the theme or meaning of a selection
represents a view on life, using textual evidence to support the claim.
Reading 3.3 Analyze the ways irony, tone, mood, the author’s style, and the “sound”
of the language achieve specific rhetorical or aesthetic purposes or both.
Reading 3.7: Evaluate the philosophical, political, religious, ethical, and/or social
influences of the historical period that shaped the characters, plots, and settings.
Reading 3.9 Analyze the philosophical arguments presented in literary works to
determine whether the author’s positions have contributed to the quality of each
work and their credibility of the characters.
I.
Preparation
A. Create an objective which incorporates these standards (sample below).
B. Read the text thoroughly, taking notes of significant events, symbols,
figurative language, patterns, themes, etc.
C. Create an outline of the novel using a flow chart/map or graphic
organizer.
D. Document sources used in your research for your presentation.
E. Make sure that all sources are properly documented by including citations
in addition to a works cited page.
II.
Frame Criteria
A. Design a frame with a picture, symbol or illustration that reflects a theme,
motif or “ big idea” in the center.
B. Include a key citation in the center which reflects a theme or poignant
message and commentary.
C. Divide the frame around the center into at least 5 sections; each section
will focus on a different way of thinking about the literature: patterns,
ethical issues, irony, changes over time, cultural values (rules). Each
section must include one citation and commentary, which supports the
icon featured in that section of the frame.
D. Identify and define a key metaphor and explained (significance) in the
frame. This could be incorporated into one of the five frame categories of
the frame.
E. Explain author’s perspective on life and how it shaped the novel. Why did
he/she use these rhetorical strategies?
III.
Accountability Log
A. Maintain a daily log of progress
B. Include name, date, goals and progress made
IV.
Presentation
A. You will be required to present your frame to the class with a partner.
B. Be sure to highlight why the author used these literary strategies in his/her
work.
Sample Objective:
This Candide frame analyzes how the author’s perspective on life and social values affect
her style, themes, “sound” of the language and character development. This frame
demonstrates these literary qualities by identifying character behavior patterns,
perspectives, ethical issues, the societal values of the 17th century and the themes
reflected in the novel.
