ASSIGNMENT BRIEF Software Design and Development
For this project you must select one of the options below to implement to prove your
skills.
Mobile option:
You have been employed by a mobile phone company “First for Mobiles”, who would
like to take mobiles phones to the next level. They would like you to design a mobile
phone based on any of the mobile phones available today. Once you have completed
the Interface as described below, the company will then incorporate software onto
their mobile phones. This will enable users to access and make calls from their
laptops/PC’s with or without their mobile. The Company, “First for Mobiles” will pay
you a large sum of money if you are successful
A new mobile phone interface – create a new interface based on the mobile phones
we all use today. Phones you could base your design on include the nokia and the
Sony Ericsson . The interface should include the following:





Names stored i.e. a phone book option
Numbers stored, also stored in the phone book option
A speed dial function (stores name or number to a key)
Key lock option (almost like a login)
Warning messages for numbers dialled wrong or overseas calls.
Hint: this mobile phone option might make you think and it should test your
programming skills. Also it should be fun
Television Guide
Television Guide – a current television magazine has approached you and asked if it
is possible for you to create a program that would give their readers the option of
looking at the television paper on the computer. They are thinking of including a CD
Rom on the back of each magazine. Options the program must have are:





Display a list of channels that are available
Include a basic program search
Tell the user about great programmes i.e. tips on what to watch
Give the programmes scores. i.e. 5 stars
Images should be included to show the users what the program is about.
Quiz option
You are employed as a Junior games designer. A promotion is available to the first
Junior Designer that can complete a successful project. You have been advised by
your mentor that you have the capabilities to be the person selected for promotion.
A quiz – based on the popular T.V show format, Who Wants to be A Millionaire:





15 questions
4 options per question
3 lifelines
Ability to take the money and run
When question incorrectly answered the game will stop.
D
Hint: This quiz format incorporating all of the above features is quite difficult to
implement and should only be chosen if you are confident of your skills.
Software Design and Development
Assignment Tasks
TASK 1
Write a report that describes the software development procedures and the need for
organisational standards. P1
Within the report describe one programming language. P2
Justify the choice of the programming language used to address the brief. M1
TASK 2
Select and use an appropriate design tool (eg. Story boards, flow charts, pseudo
code), to address the defined user need. P3
TASK 3
Implement the software program (component), remembering to include programmers’
comments P4
Demonstrate compliance with organisational standards during development of the
software program (component). M2
TASK 4
Demonstrate appropriate debugging and testing has taken place during the
development period. Keep screen shots as evidence of this and also complete a test
log. P5
Write a report that demonstrates an understanding of debugging facilities in the
software environment. M3
TASK 5
Internally document the solution and produce instructions for the users. P6
Produce a technical report and trouble shooting guide for your program. D1
TASK 6
Write an evaluation on how you applied development procedures when implementing
your design. D2
D
Grading Grid
In order to pass this unit, the evidence that the student presents for assessment needs to demonstrate that they can meet all of the
learning outcomes for the unit. The criteria for the pass grade describe the level of achievement required to pass this unit.
Grading criteria
To achieve a pass grade the evidence
must show that the student is able to:
P1 describe the software development procedures
and the need for organisational standards
To achieve a merit grade the evidence
must show that in addition to the pass
criteria, the student is able to:
To achieve a distinction grade the
evidence must show, in addition to the
pass and merit criteria, the student is able
to:
M1 justify the choice of the programming language
used to address a given need
D1 produce complete technical documentation and
a troubleshooting guide for one software
component
M2 demonstrate compliance with organisational
standards during development of a software
component
D2 evaluate how development procedures were
applied to produce a software component
P2 describe one programming language
P3 select and use an appropriate design tool to
address a defined user need
P4 produce a software component for a defined
user need.
M3 demonstrate an understanding of debugging
facilities in a chosen development environment
P5 demonstrate appropriate debugging and testing
has taken place during the development period
P6 internally document the solution and produce
user instructions
