NYU Taps Crisis Expert Dr. Michael Maurer
For Business Continuity & Homeland Security Program
New York, NY (August 27, 2004) – The New York University School of Continuing and Professional
Studies announced the hiring of crisis management expert Dr. Michael Maurer, as an instructor for its
new, one-year intensive Business Continuity certificate program.
The certificate program -- developed to train individuals to protect businesses in New York and around
the world from terrorism and other potential disasters -- begins this fall. It offers courses in Emergency
Response and Disaster, Impact Analysis, and Introduction to Business Continuity Planning, among
others. Graduates of the program will be qualified for jobs in the emerging business continuity (or “risk
management) field – in both the private and government sectors.
“We are thrilled to add a top-flight crisis management expert such as Dr. Michael Maurer to our program,”
said Howard Greenstein, Senior Director of Business and Legal Studies at NYU SCPS, and Coordinator
of the Homeland Security programs. “He brings years of experience to us - not only as a crisis manager
but also as an educator, therapist - and as a veteran of war.”
Dr. Maurer is the founder of the Metropolitan College of New York’s (MCNY) Master of Public
Administration in Emergency & Disaster Management Program. It was established in the wake of 9/11,
when the national landscape changed forever, and an emphasis on security and crisis management was
born.
Dr. Maurer received Combat Medic Training from the U.S. Army Medical Training Center, as well Critical
Infrastructure Orientation from the US Army National Guard. He served as a member of the DOD
Contingency Team for Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm for Mercer, Burlington, & Camden Counties
of the NJ National Disaster Medical System Hospitals. In addition, Dr. Maurer has over 20 years of
experience as individual, group and family therapist, has several years of teaching and public speaking
experience; and he holds a D. Min. from the Chicago Theological Seminary.
