Founded by the visionary Edward M. North, Sr., the
Taft Educational Center is now in its twenty-eighth
year of providing high quality workshops. Thousands
of teachers from all fifty states and more than fifty
countries have attended week-long TEC summer
workshops since the first math and science sessions in
1976.
The variety of workshops offered each week, the firstclass facilities of Taft School, the outstanding
teaching staff, and the mix of independent and public
school educators combine to produce an educationally
exciting environment. Workshops are offered in all
Advanced Placement subjects and a number of other

Advanced Placement Italian
Language Workshop
July 10 – July 15
This one week workshop offers a unique
opportunity for High School teachers of Italian
Language to preview the new AP Italian course
of study.
This AP Summer Institute has been endorsed by
AP Italian Language
This workshop will propose an approach for
meeting the challenge of the newly
established AP Italian Language exam and in
the process suggest models for an AP
program in Italian. Within an immersion
environment, participants will engage in the
simulation of a high school fourth year
accelerated course of study to develop
pedagogical strategies and material, with the
goal of preparing students to demonstrate
their level of Italian proficiency across the
three communicative modes: Interpersonal,
Interpretive, and Presentational. Through
examples of methodology, assignments and
assessments, we will create original material
for the resources we presently use or may use
in the future. The end result will be a
compilation of collated material to begin the
new school year. Participants are encouraged
to bring currently used strategies, techniques
and materials to share and for further
development: primary source readings
(literary, journalistic, scientific, artistic),
films, T.V. shows, music, realia, and
projects.
Instructor
Mr. Mazzola entered the teaching profession
when Italian, as a foreign language in
secondary public education, was a mere
child. He has had the pleasure of
participating in the development of his
courses in Italian. At Newton North High
School he has the luxury of offering Italian at
three different levels for four consecutive
years. It has been his responsibility and
challenge to develop the fourth and fifth
years of the language to attract subscribers at
three instructional levels. Mr. Mazzola is a
founding member of the Test Development
Committee for Advanced Placement Italian,
currently planning the topic list and first
examination for the newly-approved course.
Graduate Credits
The Taft Educational Center is pleased to
continue its association with the University
of Hartford as its graduate credit-granting
institution. Participants who successfully
complete a week-long workshop at Taft may
earn three graduate credits. Arrangement for
graduate credit is made by separate payment
of $75 per credit to the University of
Hartford. Graduate credit forms are
available from the TEC office.
Continuing Education Units
The Connecticut State Department of
Education has approved the Taft Educational
Center as a provider of CEUs. TEC will
grant 2.5 Connecticut Continuing Education

complete a week-long workshop. A number
of other state Departments of Education will
accept Connecticut CEUs.
