Genesis Chapter 36: Genealogy of the Flesh

Remember to lift up Jesus

Genesis Chapter 35 Review:

Jacob acts on God’s Word, taking authority and demanding decisions

Back to Bethel: Joy, reaffirmation of New Name, Promise

 Deborah dies, Rachel dies, Rebekah dies, Isaac dies

Jacob the lone Patriarch: A time of Sorrow, Reflection …and Growth

Esau:

The Flesh

 Rugged, Attractive, Outdoor and Athletic type…Prideful and Ungodly

Galatians5: sensuality,

Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Hebrews 12: 15 See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled; 16 that there be no

immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.

Esau to Isaac: “Is there nothing left for me?” Stuff…not Spiritual blessing

Gen 25: 30 …Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom. 31 But Jacob said, "First sell me your birthright." to me?" 33

Jacob. 34

32 Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright

And Jacob said, "First swear to me"; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to

Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

Despised the Spiritual; i.e. the things of God, and followed the desires of his flesh:

1 Corinthians 6:13 Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.

 Esau [Edom] would be destroyed:

1 Chronicles 18:12 Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah defeated 18,000 Edomites in the

Valley of Salt. Then [David] put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became servants to

David.

 Later Prophesies in Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Malachi and Obadiah of total annihilation:

Obadiah 1:3 "The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, You who live in the clefts of the rock, In the loftiness of your dwelling place, Who say in your heart, 'Who will bring me down to earth?' 4"Though you build high like the eagle, Though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down," declares the LORD.

Malachi 1:2 [Read] "I have loved you," says the LORD But you say, "How have You loved us?" "Was not Esau Jacob's brother?" declares the LORD "Yet I have loved Jacob; 3but I have hated Esau, and I have made his mountains a desolation and appointed his inheritance for the jackals of the wilderness." 4Though Edom says, "We have been beaten down, but we will return and build up the ruins"; thus says the LORD of hosts, "They may build, but

I will tear down; and men will call them the wicked territory, and the people toward whom the LORD is indignant forever."

In between Testaments the last of the Edomites were forced to convert to

Judaism; Herod was one of these last Edomites…there are no more.

Jesus models how to deal with our flesh when it demands attention:

Luke 23:8 Now Herod was very glad when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some sign performed by Him. 9And he questioned Him at some length; but He answered him

nothing. [Idumean is another spelling of Edom]

Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh…

Genesis Chapter 36

[Some information from The Genesis Record; Morris]

 Esau now married for 80 years, Jacob less than 40

 Esau at least a full generation of descendants more than Jacob

 Jacob probably acquired this record from Esau at Isaac’s burial [c.f. Gen.35]

1Now these are the records of the generations of Esau (that is, Edom).

Generations: Heb. Toledoth; Historical records

2 Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah and the granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite; 3also Basemath, Ishmael's daughter, the sister of Nebaioth.

Daughters of Canaan: the ‘ites at this point in Scripture

Apparent contradiction:

Genesis 26:35…Judith, daughter of Beeri

Basemath, daughter of Elon

Genesis 28:9 …Mahalath, daughter of Ishmael

-----------------------------------------------------

Genesis 36:2 … Oholibamah, daughter of Anah

Adah, daughter of Elon

Genesis 36:3 …Basemath, Daughter of Ishmael

Resolution:

 Judith is the same as Oholibamah

 Basemath, daughter of Elon is the same as Adah

 Basemath, daughter of Ishmael is the same as Mahalath

 Beeri the same man as Anah

 Not uncommon to have two names, perhaps married and unmarried names

4 Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, and Basemath bore Reuel, 5and Oholibamah bore Jeush and Jalam and Korah. These are the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan. 6Then Esau took his wives and his sons and his daughters and all his household, and his livestock and all his cattle and all his goods which he had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went to another land away from his brother Jacob. 7 For their property had become too great for them to live together, and the land where they

sojourned could not sustain them because of their livestock. 8So Esau lived in the hill country of Seir; Esau is Edom.

Sojourner/Pilgrim: saved or unsaved, earth is not our final destination

5 sons, unknown number of daughters and much livestock

“Away from Jacob”: Water scarce. After coming to grip with the fact that Jacob is “inheritor”, Esau moved to the mountainous regions of the Dead Sea i.e. Seir

Esau becomes Edom and subjugates [conquers] the Horites by force but also

intermarried and assimilated through marriage; i.e. Semitic +Canaanite

[c.f. Samaritans; i.e. Assyrians and Israelites]

 It is God who gave the victory…to Edom? For His purpose!

Deuteronomy 2:12 The Horites formerly lived in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed

them and destroyed them from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did to the land of their possession which the LORD gave to them. 2:22 …just as He [the

LORD] did for the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them; they dispossessed them and settled in their place even to this day

9These then are the records of the generations of Esau the father of the

Edomites in the hill country of Seir. 10These are the names of Esau's

sons: Eliphaz the son of Esau's wife Adah, Reuel the son of Esau's wife

Basemath. 11The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho and Gatam and Kenaz. 12Timna was a concubine of Esau's son Eliphaz and she bore

Amalek to Eliphaz. These are the sons of Esau's wife Adah.

 Esau’s son Eliphaz’ concubine Timna’s name given, not his wife

 Their son is Amalek

 Not of the same mother as the other sons of Eliphaz causing possible discrimination and forcing separate nation west of all other Edomites

Amalek: The first nation to oppose the entrance of Israel into the Promised Land

Numbers 24:20 And he [Balaam] looked at Amalek and took up his discourse and said,

"Amalek was the first of the nations, But his end shall be destruction."

Exodus 17:8 [Read] Then Amalek came and fought against Israel at Rephidim. 9So

Moses said to Joshua, "Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand." 10Joshua did as

Moses told him, and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed. 12But Moses' hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set.

13 So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. 14Then the

LORD said to Moses, "Write this in a book as a memorial and recite it to Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven." 15Moses built an altar and named it The LORD is My Banner; 16and he said, "The LORD has sworn; the LORD will

have war against Amalek from generation to generation."

Amalek: the flesh attacked when faint and weary:

Deuteronomy 25:17 [Read] "Remember what Amalek did to you along the way when you came out from Egypt, 18how he met you along the way and attacked among you all

the stragglers at your rear when you were faint and weary; and he did not fear God.

19"Therefore it shall come about when the LORD your God has given you rest from all your surrounding enemies, in the land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you must not forget.

Amalek: the flesh kicks us when we are down:

Psalm 137:7 Remember, O LORD, what the Edomites did on the day Jerusalem fell.

[When Nebuchadnezzar invaded Israel] "Tear it down," they cried, "tear it down to its foundations!"

Amalek: the flesh must be utterly destroyed:

1 Samuel 15:2 [Read] "Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'I will punish Amalek for what he

did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way while he was coming up from

Egypt. 3 'Now go and strike Amalek and utterly destroy all that he has, and do not spare him; but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.'"… 15:9 But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were not willing to destroy them utterly; but everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed. 15:14 But Samuel said,

"What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?" 15 Saul said, "They have brought them from the Amalekites, for the people spared the best of the sheep and oxen, to sacrifice to the LORD your God; but the rest we have utterly destroyed." 15:32 Then Samuel said, "Bring me Agag, the king of the Amalekites."

And Agag came to him cheerfully. And Agag said, "Surely the bitterness of death is past."

33 But Samuel said, "As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women." And Samuel hewed Agag to pieces before the LORD at Gilgal.

Haman was an Amalekite; that is an Agagite [c.f. Esther 3]

 Kill the flesh before it kills you:

Romans 7:5 For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the

Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.

Romans 8:6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace…

Romans 8:13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the

Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Mark 14:38 “Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." [C.f. Nehemiah 4:17, Sword and Tools]

13These are the sons of Reuel: Nahath and Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah.

These were the sons of Esau's wife Basemath. 14These were the sons of

Esau's wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah and the granddaughter of

Zibeon: she bore to Esau, Jeush and Jalam and Korah. 15These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn of Esau, are chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz, 16chief Korah, chief

Gatam, chief Amalek. These are the chiefs descended from Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Adah. 17These are the sons of Reuel,

Esau's son: chief Nahath, chief Zerah, chief Shammah, chief Mizzah. These are the chiefs descended from Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Esau's wife Basemath. 18These are the sons of Esau's wife Oholibamah: chief Jeush, chief Jalam, chief Korah. These are the chiefs descended from

Esau's wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. 19These are the sons of

Esau (that is, Edom), and these are their chiefs.

vv. 9-19: 11 grandsons of prominence listed; 7 from Eliphaz and 4 from Reuel

(sons of Adah and Basemath respectively) + 3 sons of Aholibamah

 Esau’s daughter married Horite men, as did his granddaughters

14 self-appointed “Dukes” in all; American “Czars”? The Flesh:

Romans 12:3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to

think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.

WALKING BY THE SPIRIT

For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not

practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. [Paul the Apostle;

Romans 7:15]

 Non believers impossibility; believers life-long struggle

Walk: Life-style; Walking by the Spirit: Who are we led by? Fruit will tell:

Galatians 5:22 …the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control…

 How do I bear fruit?

John 15:4 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5"I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

 How do I abide in Christ?

John 15:10 "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love…

 What commandments to abide in Christ, Bear Fruit and Walk in the Spirit?

John 15:12 "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.

How did Jesus love since this is before the cross? [though the cross the pinnacle of

His love for us]

John 13:1b …Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full

extent of his love13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. [NIV]

5 After that, he poured

Philippians 2:3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves…

Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor;

Ephesians 5:21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

Walking by the Spirit: Loving one another as Jesus loved; bearing fruit

 Read the Word, Meditate on the Word, Pray, Serve, Love

20These are the sons of Seir the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan and Shobal and Zibeon and Anah, 21and Dishon and Ezer and Dishan.

These are the chiefs descended from the Horites, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom. 22The sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; and Lotan's sister was

Timna. 23These are the sons of Shobal: Alvan and Manahath and Ebal,

Shepho and Onam. 24These are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah--he is the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness when he

was pasturing the donkeys of his father Zibeon.

Anah son of Zibeon “found hot springs… while pasturing donkeys” [Mules]? Mule:

First mention, Law of…; cross breeding female horse with donkey; not usual word for mule; may or may not be meaning. Heb. Yemim; occurs only here and in no other

Hebrew writing

25These are the children of Anah: Dishon, and Oholibamah, the daughter of

Anah. 26These are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan and Eshban and Ithran and

Cheran. 27These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan and Zaavan and Akan.

28These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. 29These are the chiefs descended from the Horites: chief Lotan, chief Shobal, chief Zibeon, chief

Anah, 30chief Dishon, chief Ezer, chief Dishan. These are the chiefs descended from the Horites, according to their various chiefs in the land of

Seir.

Prominent descendents of Seir; close associated with Esau through intermarriage

 Became one people; i.e. the Edomites

Seir: Hurrian patriarch; Pioneer and settler of the area

 7 Sons; prominent chieftains in the area w/ 19 sons of their own; 1 daughter mentioned…Timna

 Concubine to Esau’s eldest son Eliphaz, Timna the daughter of Seir in his old age

[Timna was of the same generation as Isaac, Eliphaz’ grandfather]

Timna: Considerably older than her “husband”, Eliphaz

Timna’s son Amalek: Outcast

1.

Son of Concubine

2.

Concubine “much” older than “husband”; mother much older than father

31Now these are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any

king reigned over the sons of Israel.

 31-39 likely added by Moses as there was no Israel and no King of Israel yet

 Moses prophesied of a coming King of Israel and a coming King of Kings

Deuteronomy 17:14 "When you enter the land which the LORD your God gives you, and you possess it and live in it, and you say, 'I will set a king over me like all the nations

who are around me…’

Deuteronomy 18:15 " The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him.

32Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, and the name of his city was

Dinhabah. 33Then Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah became

king in his place. 34Then Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the

Temanites became king in his place. 35Then Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the field of Moab, became king in his place; and the name of his city was Avith. 36Then Hadad died, and

Samlah of Masrekah became king in his place. 37Then Samlah died, and

Shaul of Rehoboth on the Euphrates River became king in his place. 38Then

Shaul died, and Baal-hanan the son of Achbor became king in his place.

39Then Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar became king in his place; and the name of his city was Pau; and his wife's name was

Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab.

Edom: Never a “family” dynasty; i.e. each king unrelated and throne probably taken by force

8 King listed, all mentioned as dying except Hadar, probably still alive with Moses

3 kings with cities; no capital city, transient as was Edom’s dynasty

Note: Petra is now the Capital city of what was Edom

Hadad v.35: Victory over Midian in the field of Moab; Midianites lived south of Edom and Moab to the North; Midianites swept through or east of Edom to attack Moab.

King Hadad takes Edom’s army into Moab to defeat Midian

Midian Victory the only “military exploit” mentioned of any of these Edomite kings.

40 Now these are the names of the chiefs descended from Esau, according to their families and their localities, by their names: chief Timna, chief

Alvah, chief Jetheth, 41chief Oholibamah, chief Elah, chief Pinon, 42chief

Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar, 43chief Magdiel, chief Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom (that is, Esau, the father of the Edomites), according to their habitations in the land of their possession.

40-43: 11 of the more important Dukes and Chieftains

 Not listed chronologically but geographically

 Identification of names with “families” and “places” in v. 40; i.e. “Duke of Tima,

Duke of Alvah, etc”

SUMMARY: Why?

 Most names in this chapter included in Chronicles:

1 Chronicles 1:35 The sons of Esau were Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jalam and Korah…. 54 chief Magdiel, chief Iram.

These were the chiefs of Edom.

 Moses and much later the writer of Chronicles considered Edom’s genealogy “that” important to include it. Why?

1.

To comprise a tediously organized Genealogical Record of Israel; the Truth of God’s Word able to be scrutinized by any intellectual and/or skeptic

2.

To give a Perpetual Distinction between descendents of Esau [Flesh] and

Israel [Spirit]

3.

1 Timothy 2:1 First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 3This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to

come to the knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.
