This course provides the student with an overview of the sports industry, as well as issues encountered by managers. The course will emphasize how management techniques can be applied to effectively address these issues. Assistant) OFFICE HOURS: M – F 3:15 - 5 REQUIRED TEXT & MATERIALS: Contemporary Sport Management, 3rd Edition Human Kinetics Course Learning Outcomes/Objectives: Students who successfully complete this course will be able to: 1. Identify managerial process used in facility management. 2. Understand how to identify major trends and issues impacting sports management. 3. Explain the budgetary process associated with operating various facilities. 4. Describe how to establish training procedures for staff. General Education Goals Addressed in the Course: #3 – To develop the ability to solve problems by collecting, organizing and evaluating information. Students collect, organize and evaluate laboratory data on themselves. For example, blood pressure and body fat composition. Once the information is collected, organized and evaluated the student puts a plan together on how to manage their blood pressure and to possible lower their body fat percentage. #9 – To develop global perspective on problems and issues that humankind faces and to explore solutions which are morally, socially, economically, politically and ecologically sound. Discussions of the morality and ethics of the Health Care System. The fact that good social rapport with your nurse or physician can allow a patient to recover from an illness faster. Ecological or environmental concerns and their effect on our health. #10 – To develop the understanding of health and well being necessary to confront the challenges facing individuals, families and communities. All issues of health and well-being are directed to the student in a manner that encourages them to apply the information to themselves, their present and future families as well as the community. Course Standards: Any date you are unable to make an exam should be scheduled to be taken in advance. Emergency make-ups should be taken up with the instructor in a timely fashion. The allowance of make-ups is done on an individual basis. Make-ups are not always allowed. Class participation is strongly encouraged. Tardiness is strongly discouraged and may result in academic penalty. Withdrawal Policy: Effective Fall Semester, 2008, a new OCC course withdrawal policy took effect. A student may withdraw or be withdrawn from a course with the instructor assigning a grade of "W" and providing last date of attendance, up until a specified date. This date changes every semester. If a student stops attending or is administratively withdrawn after this date, an "F" will be assigned. The Add/Drop/Withdrawal Form can be obtained from the Registration and Records Office on the first floor of the Administration Building. Return the completed and signed form to the Registration and Records Office. This new policy applies to all OCC courses. Attendance Policy: Based on college policy 10% rule. Course that meets 30 times per semester – 3 absences. Exceeding college policy may result in academic penalty.
