Morganfield’s last season; joined Morganfield Dunbar and Sturgis to make up Union County the next year
broke a 22-game home winning streak for the Maroons
the last year for Million which joined Earlington in integration consolidation the next season; Lester Mimms
was the only basketball coach they ever had...and he reportedly never had a losing season.
He had a wonderful recorded interview with WFMW’s Elmer Kelly that (very probably) never got on the air.
He described Million’s home-and-home series with a particular opponent by saying, “We played Henderson at
their place and they bested us by 7 points. When we played them down here, we whipped their ass.”

Harry Byrd, later coach and then principal, was a starting forward for Caldwell County
Coach C. G. (Curtis Gwyn) Sherrill died Saturday, December 29th, of a heart attack. He was 38. It was
between days of the Madisonville Invitational Tournament. The championship and consolation games were
cancelled. Coached from 1951-54 at Dixon and took the team to the state tourney his last year. Coached at
Providence in ’55 and ’56...before coming to Madisonville
C
Otis Dinning’s last year. He was 541-193 in his 25 years at PTHS.
D
1st year for West Hopkins High School (formerly Nebo, Dalton and Charleston)
E
quite a tumultous year at Henderson City. Geralds replaced Chet Montgomery in December, then got sick with
cancer and couldn’t coach all of the games. His assistant, Bill Womack, coached when necessary. Geralds
passed away soon after the season ended.
F
Daviess County beat Henderson City for the title 57-49.
G
Wayne Chapman 28 points for D.C.; Danny Barker (who later coached the Panthers) was also on this team
H
I have a note...that is crossed out...that says this was Caldwell Smith’s 22nd year as coach at Rosenwald. He
was head coach there in 1949 (Messenger, December ’48)...but somewhere I have a note that Robert Barlow
coached the Tigers to the finals of the KSAL state championship in 1945...I think. I don’t think that Coach
Smith was head coach for 22 consecutive years through 1963, anyway. Finding definitive info is tough.

The Messenger game story included: “An unusual interlude was supplied when Referee Bill Utley imposed a
technical foul against the Maroons, accusing Coach Ray Ellis of coaching from the sidelines.”
B
“Coach” Kenneth Powell was 17; had played 3 years, but was struck with infantile paralysis during the summer.
Coaches were hard to find during the war...many had been called up or had volunteered for the armed services.
C
“Coach” John Johnson was a student / player / coach. Apparently a senior, he scored 26 points in the varsity
game; coached both the varsity and JV games; and played tuba in the band during the 1st half of the JV game.
D
Sidney Kirkwood scored 17 of Nebo’s 18 points

Tom Stevenson became assistant football coach in 1942 and was basketball assistant until being called to World
War II in mid-January, 1943. Ray Ellis became ill, then injured his hip in late January, and school principal
Sam Pollock returned to the bench as coach for three weeks or so. Three of the last seven regular-season games
were cancelled. Pollock was head coach of the Maroons in 1942, and the official scorer of the Sweet 16 for
many years later on.

game was actually played at Munfordville. It rained all day, and the roof over the Horse Cave gym sprang a
leak. This was a rematch of a 1st round state tournament game from the year before...which the Maroons also
won. This was also the first lost of the season for Horse Cave after 16 wins.
**
Paul Walker, a Madisonville graduate (in 1928, I believe) went on to become one of the winningest high school
basketball coaches in the state of Ohio.
***
The game Madisonville didn’t play its starters. The Messenger treated it lightly, but did report the Hopkinsville
crowd booed loudly...and quoted coach Ray Ellis as saying he didn’t want to chance one of his stars getting hurt. The
New Era was hot. They promoed the game with complimentary words about the Maroon squad; quoted Ray Ellis as
saying his players were sick and worn out and needed to rest up for the tourney. This was the last regular season game,
and district didn’t start for another week. Later, it was said that rumors the Hop players would hurt the Mad players
was the reason the Maroon starters didn’t dress. Hop’s coach got junior high and freshmen players out of the stands to
play the 4th quarter. Most of the crowd went home in the 3rd quarter when it became apparent the Mad. players
wouldn’t take the floor. Hop coach Oakley Brown, normally an unruffled type, reportedly yelled at Ray Ellis as the
latter left the floor, “You haven’t heard the last of this!”
(Feb. 24th / away / Madisonville starters watched the game in street clothes...allegedly because of rumors that they
would be purposely hurt; Maroons’ subs played the entire game. At the time, Ray Ellis said his players were sick,
tired, and needed rest for the post-season tournament; but the tourney was a week away. The whole deal caused quite
a furor in Hopkinsville...talked about by New Era writer Joe Dorris nearly a decade later. At the time, Dorris noted that
Hop coach Oakley Brown was never seen with ruffled feathers, but as Ray Ellis walked away after the game, Brown
reportedly said loudly, “You haven’t heard the last of this!” Hopkinsville had agreed to postpone the game from
Tuesday to Thursday because of the weather...and to help Madisonville’s chances against Paducah on that Wednesday
night. The Maroons won that game. The New Era had promoted the game, saying it would be the best club to visit
Hoptown in at least a couple of seasons. The article also said that Oakley Brown got some Junior High players out of
the stands to play in the 4th quarter...and that many of the fans went home early in the 2nd half when it became obvious
the Madisonville stars, who were sitting in the stands in street clothes, wouldn’t play.)
****
sudden death overtime Morganfield got the tip and made a mad dash for the goal...scoring only 5 seconds into
the extra session. It was considered an extraordinary play.

Madisonville’s win at Hopkinsville was described as “...the first victory ever chalked by the Madisonville
quintet on the oversize Hopkinsville floor.” Floor size was occasionally described as “crackerbox” for tiny
gyms at Providence, Clay and a few other places, but this was the first time I had seen this expression. And
Madisonville’s new gym was already open, and apparently was not considered over-size. Hoptown’s Central
Avenue gym was used from 1930 through 1968.

This game was played during tremendous floods that covered several states in late January. The weather wiped
out most games for several days; many were hastily scheduled or re-scheduled. There was no sports at all in the
Messenger for almost a week because of expanded news coverage of the flood...during which time Madisonville
defeated Dawson for a second time on the season. The game was referred to as a win a couple of times, but I
never found the score reported in the Messenger. Some unusual series resulted from the weather: Madisonville
played Dawson Springs four times instead of two. Back-to-back games on back-to-back nights, home and
away, were played against both Marion and Morganfield.
**
First game in the new gym at Browning Springs. For 13 years or so, the Maroons had played at Higym...at the
high school on South Seminary Street. Interestingly, the Browning Springs gym opened in February of 1937…
and the football stadium opened that fall…but the new high school didn’t open for classes for another year: in
the fall of 1938.

a “blind draw tournament”…which usually involved four teams; the draw for opponents would be held an hour
or less before the one-day event started; always included a consolation and championship game -- we called
them “4-way” tourneys when I was in school
***
As you go back in time, this is the year the tournament set-ups start to go crazy. They were making advances...
by putting entire counties in the same districts…but the groupings of districts into regions was still in the
formative stage.
