FIRST ANNUAL REPORT - DELIVERABLE N. 6 First Year Annual Report on N 1- Sharing knowledge and resources Eu-ARTECH Access, Research and Technology for the conservation of the European Cultural Heritage Integrating Activity implemented as Integrated Infrastructure Initiative Contract number: RII3-CT-2004-506171 Project Co-ordinator: Prof. Brunetto Giovanni Brunetti Reporting period: from June 1st 2004 to May 31st 2005 Project funded by the European Community under the “Structuring the European Research Area” Specific ProgrammeResearch Infrastructures action Networking Activity 1 - Sharing knowledge and resources N1 First Annual Report (Responsible – J.L. Boutaine, C2RMF) Activities to promote the “sharing of knowledge and resources” among infrastructure operators, as well as that of skills and expertise among conservation scientists, have been developed. Diffusion of good practices in examination of paintings was persecuted. Discussions on organic substance analyses were promoted. Objectives have been diffusion of knowledge, definition of common analytical parameters for significant interlaboratory comparison of results, looking forward for possible future adoption of standards. During the first year, participants in Eu-ARTECH - N1 were all the Consortium’s partners, apart INOA and RWTH (only in the Research programme). All the foreseen milestones have been achieved and, in spite substantial minor expenses to be partially attributed to some delay in the contract signature, all the planned activities were satisfactorily accomplished without any deviations. During the first year period, Task 1 was operative, articulated as: Sub-task 1a (Review on the state-of-the-art in non-destructive technique applications) and Sub-task 1b (Review on the state of the art of analytical investigation of organic substances). In parallel to these specific tasks, various activities devoted to the dissemination of Eu-ARTECH activities were also carried out. Therefore, within the first 12 months the following main operative lines were activated: -connections with the main European organisations in this area; -connection with the main European institution on standardisation (CEN); -organisation of an event of great resonance in London, on “examination of paintings”, connected with a great exhibition on Raphael at The National Gallery; -review of the state-of-the-art in non-destructive techniques applications, that led to one specialists’ workshop on non-destructive portable and laboratory analytical techniques (Subtask 1a); -organisation of meetings and discussions on organic substances analyses (Subtask 1b), towards the perspective of harmonisation of analytical methodologies and a meaningful intercomparison of results among laboratories. These are the corresponding developed activities: An important effort has been made regarding connections with European institutions external to the Consortium and active in the same area: -a document summarising the project plans, containing specific information on AGLAE and MOLAB Transnational Access, was distributed to more than one hundred and twenty institutions already in contact with Eu-ARTECH; -the diffusion target was then broadened to existing networks (COST G7, COST G8, CHIMART [network dedicated to chemistry & cultural heritage in France], RTPHC [Red Tematica Patrimonio Historico Cultural in Spain], ICOM-CC), material producers (paper, colours, pigments, pencils, pastels), instrumentation manufacturers, technology research centres (wood, textiles, paper, ceramics, glass, stones), some international organisations… All in all, more than 400 institutions, companies, research centres, etc., were contacted (see this list in Annex I to this report). At the end of May 2005 more than 100 institutions of 29 countries have manifested their interest in the EU-ARTECH project. This effort will be continued, in particularly towards libraries, archives, historical buildings institutions, archaeological institutions, restoration workshops, producers of cultural heritage materials (pigments, dyes, paper, textiles, wood, stone, glass, ceramics…). The database initiated during the previous European project LabS TECH relating to the characteristics of institutions (public cultural heritage institutions, universities, research centres, museums, libraries, restoration workshops, foundations, industrial technology research centres...) active in examination, characterisation & analysis of cultural heritage artefacts and their component materials has been continuously updated (C2RMF). New entrants, via their interest in Eu-ARTECH, have permitted extension of the database from 106 to 125 institutions from 28 countries working on 114 different techniques. It has been proposed to update regularly this database, and to transfer it on the Eu-ARTECH website. Contacts were established with CEN/TC 346 “Conservation of cultural property”. CEN is the major provider of European Standards and technical specifications. It is the only recognised European Organisation according to Directive 83/189 for the planning, drafting, and adoption of European Standards in all areas of economic activity. CEN has a particular responsibility, due to the new approach, where standards define specific technical details which could be in connection with the European legislation. In particular: -Vasco Fassina, Coordinator of CEN/TC 346 participated to the Eu-ARTECH kick-off meeting in Firenze; - S. Bracci, A.M. Mecchi (CNR-ICVBC) and D.Pinna (OPD) participated to the first meeting of the CEN/TC 346 working group WG3 “Evaluation of methods and products for conservation works”. Contacts were established with UNO organisations: UNESCO and IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). Both manifested their interest in the Eu-ARTECH project. A representative of the IAEA was invited to present at the Eu-ARTECH Amsterdam workshop (January 2005) the action of IAEA in the area of application of nuclear techniques to the study and safeguard of cultural heritage (activation analysis, XRF & IBA techniques, X ray, gamma ray and neutron radiography...). Symmetrically, a representative of the Consortium (J.L. Boutaine, C2RMF) was invited to a meeting at the headquarter of IAEA in Vienna (Meeting for Nuclear Techniques for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Artefacts in the Mediterranean Region February 7-9 2005), to present Eu-ARTECH to cultural institutions and research centres of countries of the Mediterranean basin involved in a regional technical co-operation programme. This permitted to open the Eu-ARTECH information to countries like Albania, Croatia, Macedonia, Malta, Serbia-Montenegro and, Turkey. This permitted also to foresee conferences in co-operation with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste (a virtual window towards south-eastern Mediterranean countries) and with the Ministry of Culture of Greece in Athens during 2006. A list of conferences, seminars, or training courses in the area of the conservation of cultural heritage was established. It has been periodically updated and distributed through the EuARTECH website. A list of 40 relevant websites of interest in the conservation science and conservation/restoration of cultural heritage has also been established and made accessible (see Annex II to this report and Eu-ARTECH website). Regarding Task 1 on “Analytical resources and investigation strategies”: - a workshop, dedicated to the applications of the most advanced techniques to the study of Raphael paintings was organised in London, in occasion of the great exhibition dedicated to the Italian Renaissance painter at The National Gallery; - the opportunity to discuss together the more recent data on scientific examination of Raphael’s paintings has proved particularly valuable and, at the same time, dissemination on Eu-ARTECH activities was positively carried out. From the workshop emerged that the painting examination methodologies and interpretation of results had benefited from the already established close cooperation of Consortium’s participants, and many of the works presented at the workshop were applications of the non-destructive analytical techniques offered by AGLAE and MOLAB. -The workshop was very successful, at least for dissemination: behind the representatives of the Consortium’s institutions, it was attended by a large number of participants that had the possibility to learn on the activities of Eu-ARTECH and appreciate the opportunities of access to MOLAB and AGLAE. Participants were belonging to public conservation institutions of London, UK, Oxford, UK, Siena, I, Liverpool, UK, Edinburgh, UK, Glasgow, UK, Helsinki, Fin, Munich, D, Lisbon, P, Washington, USA, New York, USA, etc.; universities, such as those of Oslo, Sw, Canterbury, UK, Groeningen, NL, Sussex, UK, Genova, I, Cambridge, UK, and Oxford, UK); three specialised European Journals (The Burlington Magazine, UK; Il Giornale dell’Arte, I; Kermes, I) and 21 private restorers belonging to SME’s (see the list of participants in Annex I). A so large and qualified participation well witnesses the interest of the whole world of operators and users on Eu-ARTECH initiatives (see deliverable D03). A literature overview of the most frequently used non-destructive analytical techniques was carried out (Sub-task 1a). On the basis of the survey, selected laboratories, currently applying the state-of-the -art non-destructive techniques were identified and experts were invited to participate to a workshop in Amsterdam, co-organised by C2RMF and ICN,with the co-operation of COST G8, open to public participation, with the title “Non-destructive analysis of cultural heritage artefacts”. All the thirteen Eu-ARTECH consortium members participated in the workshop. In total, 72 persons from 11 countries were present. From the workshop a CD has been produced with the “ppt” files of the presentations. The presentations are available in the Eu-ARTECH website (see deliverables D02 and D04)). OADC coordinated the activities of the task on applied methodologies and comparative evaluation of results in organic substance analyses (Sub-task 1b). During the first year, a core group was spontaneously formed by OADC, NGL, ICN, and KIK/IRPA for the organisation of the task activities, while UNI-PG, C2RMF, and all the other partners were invited to join. Actually, the activity on organic substance analyses benefits of cooperation with the Users’ Group for Mass Spectrometry and Chromatography (MaSC) – (www.mascgroup.org ) that operates with the aim to create a discussion forum for conservation scientists who wish to exchange information regarding: 1. sampling strategies and protocols; 2. chromatographic and mass spectrometric analysis; 3. data treatment and interpretation of results. Since many of the objectives of MaSC were found in common with those of Eu-ARTECH N1, good interactions between Eu-ARTECH and MaSC Group were established and consolidated. General objectives of Task1 and Sub-task 1b, specifically based on discussions on methodologies and comparative evaluation of results in organic substance analyses, is the improvement of research on organic substances in artworks and the harmonisation in the interpretation of analytical data. To this goal, in order to avoid a useless dispersion all along the very numerous cases that could be encountered, Eu-ARTECH partners focused initially the networking discussions on natural dyestuffs and lake pigment investigations. The decision was taken during the first meeting of the networking participants in Montpellier on November 6th, 2004, where OADC, ICN, IRPA, and NG were present. The meeting was held in occasion of “Dyes in history and archaeology-DHA 23”, a conference where Eu-ARTECH initiatives obtained a great success. (A short report on the Montpellier meeting is available in the Eu-ARTECH website, reserved area); -a working meeting was held in Amsterdam, (January 14th, 2005) with the participation of all N1 partners. In that occasion, the organisation of a working meeting in Ormylia was decide. In particular, a typical dye was chosen as representative (the weld) and discussions on analyses for the identification of weld were planned. A short report on the progress of this activity has been included in the First Interim Report. -finally, during the First Annual Meeting in Ormylia, the meeting on “Analytical strategies for natural dyestuffs' investigation in cultural heritage objects: intercomparison of the applied methodologies and evaluation of results”, was held on May 28th, 2005. Thirty-one consortium’s participants and three invited external experts attended the discussion dedicated to the evaluation of results of a pilot study on weld analyses carried out with as final objective, the assessment of the comparability of results between laboratories. The comparison of different analytical strategies followed by the various Consortium’s partners was fruitfully carried out and various aspects regarding advantages and drawbacks of the various procedures were discussed. Some conclusions were traced, although the theme appears so wide and articulated, that more extended cases should be discussed and problems deepened (see deliverable D05). A plan for co-operation between the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) BOSTON - USA and EUARTECH relating to CAMEO (http://www.mfa.org/_cameo/frontend) has been adopted, setting a reasonable and workable contribution of the Consortium’s members. The contributions of Eu-ARTECH could consist of: - Addition of non English terms (French, German, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and Greek) in the synonym list to aid in searching records - Addition of European commercial products (and their trade names) that are used in conservation - Addition of images - Editorial review of the records in the field of expertise of the consortium’s members: stone deterioration, metal conservation, pigments, examination & analysis techniques - radiographic techniques, ionising radiation based analysis techniques, mural paintings... - Validation of all the European websites included in the CAMEO Directory, particularly those of the consortium’s members and introduction of those who wish to appear in it. From the comparison of objectives and work developed, it appears that at the end of the year, in spite of some difficulty due to some delay in the budget arrival, N1 activity was successfully developed and the obtained results are well behind the foreseen milestones.
