WELCOME BACK to the 2011-2012 School Year! Our plan is to meet as a
group of lead Career Development Teachers at our upcoming September 26th PD
day for part of the day. At this session we will discuss the plans for the year.
o Sun West Career Fair 2012
o Wiki/Blog - Update and Collaborate
o Saskatchewan Career and Work Education Association Conference
Apprenticeship A20, B20, A30, B30 – Sun West School Division offers
Apprenticeship Credits. If a student already has a paid job working in a
designated trade under the DIRECT supervision of a certified journeyperson,
he/she may qualify for school credit. Call Vanessa if more information is needed.
Communication with Parents/Community – All of you do something different
in terms of keeping parents and community members informed of Career
Development information. Whether you use the school newsletter, website, flyers
home, etc as communication channels, please keep up the good work. If you wish
to talk about ideas for this, please let me know. If anything in this update is worth
sending out to your parents/community/students, please feel free to use it.
Career Development Website – I will try to keep up the
http://cms.sunwestsd.ca/lewis site again this year, but I really feel it is in need of
revamping. Feel free to let me know if any links are outdated. I will try to update
scholarship info as it becomes available. Thanks!
Career and Work Exploration: CWEX Teachers…please send me any CWEX
A30/B30 student names if needing WHMIS passwords. Remember students are
to access passwords only once. If any teachers wish to look at our have their own
online Moodle CWEX 10, 20, A30 or B30 courses to look at or to use, please
email me.
Great Plains College Information: See info below.
Post Secondary Prerequisites: I have attached a document from Prairie South
School Division that might be a good ‘at a glance’ look at some of the necessary
prerequisites at some U of R, U of S, and SIAST. Always refer to the postsecondary institution’s website, however, for specifics.
Registrars Handbook for School Administrators, Secondary Level Courses
and Prerequisite Requirements, Request for High School Transcripts 20112012 versions have been update and can be found at:
http://www.education.gov.sk.ca/registrarshandbook. This is very useful
information for you in your role as Career Counsellors.
Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) has updated their Student
Contract, requiring students to submit their Ministry of Education ID number.
Also starting this year, SYA will only send out passports once contracts have been
received by their office. This is a fabulous program for your students (much
different than Apprenticeship Credits).

Spend-a-Days: This is the time for Spend-a-Day opportunities. Because we
offer the Career Fair every other year, it is not required to attend spend-a-days
with students. That being said, students and parents can be made aware of the
information as many spend-a-days offer sessions for students and parents and are
worthwhile attending. If you deem there is a need for a group of students to
attend, please discuss with me and we will go from there as proper forms would
have to be filled out and approved at the division office. In addition, the trip
would have to be funded somehow as we would not have access to the centralized
budget.
Student Awards: Is now available on Twitter and Facebook. Students can
download the student awards app to an iPod Touch or iPhone.
Student Awards – Early Entrance: Many colleges and universities offer early
entrance awards to Grade 11 students based on conditional acceptance. Be sure to
help students research options.
Scholarships:
o As scholarships come in, I will try to keep the website updated at
cms.sunwestsd.ca/lewis.
Teacher Professional SMART Goals:
o Remember, we must submit Professional Smart Goals as do all other
teachers. When planning yours this year, feel free to consider designing a
SMART goal that is in line with our mission to use/add to/etc. our Career
Development Wiki/Blog:
o http://careerconnectors.wikispaces.com/
o http://careerconnectors.wordpress.com/
Here’s to a great year of working together to help students navigate their life/career
journey and realize their dreams.
