Renewed Secondary Mathematics Program: Information for GSCS Parents, Guardians, & Students The purpose of this document is to provide information for parents and students so they can make an informed decision regarding the mathematics pathways. The information provided in this handout is based on the most current communication received from post-secondary institutions as of November 2010. Please note that the post-secondary information regarding the new mathematics requirements is in draft version. Foundations of Mathematics This pathway is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for post-secondary studies in programs that do not require the study of theoretical calculus. Topics include financial mathematics, geometry, measurement, number sense, logical reasoning, relations and functions, statistics and probability. Here are some examples of post secondary programs that are allowing Foundations of Mathematics 30 as an acceptable entrance requirement: University of Regina – Arts, Business Administration, Education, Fine Arts, Sports and Recreation Studies, Nursing, Social Work University of Saskatchewan – Arts and Science, Agriculture and Bioresources, Business, Kinesiology SIAST – Power Engineering Technician, Nursing, Occupational Therapist Assistant, Health Information Management Workplace & Apprenticeship Mathematics This pathway is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into the majority of trades and for direct entry into the work force. Topics include algebra, geometry, measurement, number sense, statistics and probability. Here are some examples of post secondary programs that are allowing Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics 30 as an acceptable entrance requirement: University of Regina – Education (no math/science major/minor), Fine Arts, Social Work SIAST – Electronics Technician (min. of 60%), Forest EcoTourism Technology (min. of 60%), Computer Networking Technician (min. of 60%), Integrated Resource Management (min. of 60%) Please note - some of SIAST’s programs will accept Grade 10 (i.e. Carpentry, Welding), Grade 11 (i.e. Esthetician, Hairstylist), Grade 12 (i.e. Hotel and Restaurant Administration, Educational Assistant) as admission requirements. Please see the SIAST website for more details. Pre-Calculus This pathway is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs that require the study of theoretical calculus. Topics include algebra and number sense, measurement, relations and functions, trigonometry, and permutations, combinations and binomial theorem. Here are some examples of post secondary programs that are allowing Pre-Calculus 30 as an acceptable entrance requirement: University of Saskatchewan – Arts and Science, Agriculture and Bioresources, Business, Kinesiology *Pre-Calculus 30 AND Calculus 30 are required for Engineering University of Regina – Arts, Business Administration, Education, Fine Arts, Kinesiology, Sports and Recreation Studies, Nursing, Science, Social Work SIAST – Civil Engineering Technology, Computer Aided Design and Drafting Technology, Architectural and Building Technologies (min. of 70%) Here are some examples of post secondary programs that are allowing Pre-Calculus 20 as an acceptable entrance requirement: University of Regina – Arts, Fine Arts, Social Work SIAST – Radiation and Environmental Monitoring Technician, Dental Assisting Please note that a few University of Regina programs are requiring Foundations of Mathematics 20 AND PreCalculus 30 as entrance requirements: Education (secondary with a major/minor in Math, Physics or Chemistry), Engineering and Applied Science For more information regarding post secondary requirements, please visit the following websites: University of Saskatchewan - http://explore.usask.ca/counsellors/pdf/guide.pdf (page 27) University of Regina – no link currently available SIAST - http://www.siast.sk.ca/programs/atoz.shtml Renewed Secondary Mathematics Program Mathematics 11 & 21 This pathway is designed for students who require a modified mathematics program. Please note - some of SIAST’s programs will accept Grade 10 (i.e. Carpentry, Welding), Grade 11 (i.e. Esthetician, Hairstylist), Grade 12 (i.e. Hotel and Restaurant Administration, Educational Assistant) as admission requirements. Please see the SIAST website for more details. Mathematics 11, 21 and Calculus 30 courses already exist and will continue to exist under this new framework. Please see the “Three Math Paths – One Important Choice” brochure from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education for more information.
