Experiment 1A-Welcome to
Chemistry 11 - Single Replacement
Reaction
Mark ________/15
Purpose: To observe and perform a single replacement reaction
Materials:
-
250mL beaker
50ml or 100mL graduated cylinder
scoupula
5cm x 5cm square aluminum foil
-
50mL of tap water
small scoop of Copper(II)chloride
dihydrate
thermometer
Procedure:
1. Put on SAFETY GLASSES and get your equipment, make sure it is clean.
2. Place the clean, dry beaker on the scale, press the TARE button, the scale will read 0.00,
Weigh out 4.0 grams of CuCl2. Record observation
3. Place 50.0mL of water in the beaker. Record observation
4. Mix the salt in the water, stir it with a glass stir rod. Be sure that it is dissolved. Record
Observations
5. Cut a 5cm x 5cm piece of Aluminum foil., weigh it and record observations
6. Crumple the foil into a loose ball about the size of a golf ball
7. Immerse the foil into the water and salt mixture, Record the initial and final temperature and
any other observations
8. Once the reaction is complete, carefully pour the solution down the drain with water pay close
attention and do not pour any solids down the drain.
9. Remove the solid precipitate from the beaker and dry it by pressing the paper towel. BE SURE
IT IS COMPLETELY DRY. Record the mass of solid. After the mass is recorded, the
product can be put in the garbage.
10. Clean up.

Questions and Analysis:
1. Write out the balanced equation for the reaction. Write out the reactants and products.
2. What evidence was there that a chemical reaction took place?
3. Explain why the blue/green colour disappeared during the reaction.
4. What is a salt? What were the 2 salts in this reaction?
5. Which if any, of the reactants was in excess? How did you know?
Conclusion
Write 2-3 sentences that outlines the purpose of the lab. Did you complete your objective?
