In this unit students will examine how language is used to persuade in
motivational speeches from different historical, social and cultural contexts.
Students will design a persuasive motivational speech to promote a point of
view or enable a new way of seeing.

speak with emphasis or stress on key words
•
pause after key points to add emphasis to your words
•
use gestures to emphasise key points
•
use eye contact to connect with your audience.

5. Write an introduction to a speech. Begin in an interesting way to get the attention of the
audience and to orientate them to your topic. Consider using one of the following:
