PHEOC Vocabulary

Conclusion o A summary statement about the results of the experiment.

Constant o What you keep the same in an experiment so your results are valid.

Ex) FLINKERS: cork used, type of water (salt or fresh), size of container, etc.

Control o A standard used for comparison. What you compare your results to. o A starting point.

Ex) FLINKERS: the plain cork.

Dependent variable o What you measure in an experiment

Ex) FLINKERS: Where your cork is in the water.

Experiment / Experimental Procedure o Includes a complete list of materials used o The steps of the procedure are numbered o There is a complete list of directions for the experiment.

Hypothesis o It is a statement with proper punctuation, o It provides a possible answer to the problem question, based on background knowledge

Independent Variable o The one thing you change in an experiment o “I” change

Ex) FLINKERS: What you put on your cork.

Inference o Conclusions based on observations.

Observation o Facts gathered with the one or more of the five senses (see, hear, smell, touch, taste) o Observations include sketches and word labels

Problem / Problem Question o It is written as a question o It is testable- the answer requires experimentation

Vocabulary Study Tips

o Make Flashcards o Write a vocabulary word on one side, and the definition on the other side. o Review the flashcards every day until you know your vocabulary words! o Have someone quiz you o You can let them use your vocabulary list or your flashcards to quiz you. o Have them read you the definition, so you can tell them the vocabulary word.
