Ellen Anderson - Academic
Technology Manager for
Languages - ILS
Ellen Anderson is responsible for supporting the
technology needs of languages across the
curriculum. She comes to Bates from Vassar College
where she was a Visiting Lecturer in German
Studies. An accomplished teacher and technologist,
Ellen has taught at Stanford, American and
Georgetown Universities, the UN and has managed
technology operations for non profits.
Jess Anthony - Class Notes Editor Working primarily from home, Jess '96 oversees the
- OCMR
heart and soul of any college magazine: in Bates'
case editing 27 pages of class notes each issue,
upwards of 30,000 words! She majored in English at
Bates and earned her M.F.A. at George Mason
University. A widely published fiction writer, Jess
was selected for "Best New American Voices 2006".
She teaches creative writing part time at the
University of Southern Maine. Jess lives in Portland
with husband - Jonathan Wyman '97 - and newly
adopted dog Roxy --- named after a dance club in
Prague!
Helen Boucher - Asst. Professor - Helen comes to Bates with a degree from the
Psychology
University of California, Berkeley. Her research has
included: the study of how culture shapes the
structure of self-concept, how culture shapes the
nature of evaluative motives linked to the self, how
culture shapes the string of uniqueness in identity, the
malleability (versus stability) of self-knowledge,
implicit self-knowledge (and implicit bias) and self
presentation.
Dick Brown - Visiting Asst.
Professor - Chemistry
Dick comes to Bates with a degree from the
University of California, Davis. His research has
included: developing methods to clean
semiconductor materials using supercritical carbon
dioxide systems.
Marybeth Carmody - Laboratory
Research Asst. - Biology
Marybeth is working on a federally funded project
that investigates how some forms of pollution induce
cardiovascular disease. She has a M.S. in Applied
Immunology from the University of Southern Maine.
Marybeth has significant molecular and cellular
research experience and comes to Bates, most
recently, from the University of New England in
Biddeford.
Karen Caron - Administrative
Assistant - Admissions
Karen brings to Bates a wide range of skills gained
from her twenty years of office experience, including
14 years in various roles at L.L. Bean in Freeport.
She enjoys sewing and gardening as well as being
active outdoors year round whether motorcycling in
the summer or cross-country skiing and skating in the
winter. Karen is a native of the Lewiston-Auburn
community.
James Charlesworth - Stock
Assistant - Bookstore
James joined the staff at the College store in early
August and comes to us from Barnes and Noble in
Augusta where he worked as a lead bookseller. He
grew up eighty miles east of Pittsburgh, PA and
attended Penn State (undergraduate) and Emerson
College (MFA). A writer of fiction, James' work has
appeared in the literary journal "Natural Bridge" and
his current novel-in-progress recently earned him a
Martin Dibner Fellowship. He also plays ice hockey,
has a pet turtle named "Percy" and offers free guitar
lessons to anyone who's interested.
Russell Clark - Den Shift Leader - Russell has both worked and taught in the food
Dining Services
service industry for over 30 years. He held teaching
and food service positions a New Hampshire College
and Hesser College. At East Stroudsburg University,
Russell taught courses full time and managed PJ's
Cafe for the Hotel Restaurant Department. He is
originally from Auburn and moved back to the area
in May 2003 to be closer to his family. Russell
currently owns the Buckfield Inn and is leasing the
business to former employees. He is looking forward
to being a part of the Bates College Dining Services
and finds all the people to be helpful and friendly.,
Matt Coulombe - Custodian Physical Plant
Matt was born and raised in Lewiston. He attended
Lewiston High School and is the father of two
children. Matt enjoys down hill skiing.
Alex Dauge-Roth - Asst.
Professor - French
Alex comes to Bates with a degree from the
University of Michigan. His research has included:
testimony, immigration and trauma literature
spanning French and Francophone studies.
CJ DeMatteo - Asst. Football
Coach - Athletics
CJ was promoted to a full time position after serving
as a part time assistant last year. Along with
coaching the running backs, he will be the recruiting
coordinator. CJ will also be an assistant women's
lacrosse coach in the spring.
Jaime Doucette - Student
Financial Services Assistant -
Jaime is a Maine native. Having grown up in
northern Maine, she enjoys the snow and especially

snow boarding and also enjoys playing tennis and
golf in the summer. Jaime brings to Bates freshness
in perspective as a recent graduate from the
University of Maine, Fort Kent.
Alison Dumont - Service - Dining Alison comes to Bates from Regis Hairstyle where
Services
she has worked for 13 years and plans on working
there on Fridays just in case someone is looking for a
good hairstylist! She is married with one child and a
dog and enjoys reading, being outdoors walking,
hiking, etc.
Stephanie Dumont - Staff
Assistant - Alumni & Parent
Programs
Stephanie comes to Bates after working for 17 years
at L.L. Bean in customer service and risk
management. She is pursuing her degree in
Leadership and Organization Studies at
USM/Lewiston Auburn. Stephanie is a warm and
energetic addition to the A&PP staff.
Sylvia Federico - Asst. Professor - Sylvia comes to Bates with a degree from the
English
University of Indiana. Her research has included:
Anglo-Saxon poetry, Arthurian literature, Chaucer,
founding myths, Medieval drama and women
writers.
Matthew Fountain - Laboratory
Research Asst. - Bio-Chemistry
Matthew comes to Bates from Purdue University. He
is working with Paula Schlax to understand how
bacteria survive exposure to environmental change,
RNA structure and function relationships.
Shannon Fournier - Security
Officer
Shannon is a Lewiston native and graduated from the
University of Maine, Augusta with a BS in criminal
justice. She holds a substance abuse certificate and
has served as a court advocate for AWAP.
Valerie Franks - Asst. Dean Admissions
Valerie graduated from Bates in '98 and pursued a
career in marketing. She started at a firm in the
Czech Republic and continued on to a strategy and
marketing consulting firm based in New York City.
Valerie moved back to Maine and is thrilled to be
back at Bates.
Margaret Galligan - Office
Specialist - Admissions
Margaret was previously employed at Per Se
Technologies for 5 years. She graduated from the
University of Southern Maine with a bachelor's
degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences with a
minor in Early Childhood Development.
Catherine Ganung - Interim
Director of Student Financial
Catherine moved here from Kailua, Hawaii where she
was director of Financial Aid at Hawaii Pacific
Services
University. Prior to that, she was the Associate
Director of Boston University's Student Service
Center. Catherine received a BS in Communications
from Boston University School of Public
Communications, Master of Education in Higher
Education Policy, Planning and Administration from
the University School of Education and and MBA
from Hawaii Pacific University.
James Gauthier - Sanitation Dining Services
James comes to Bates from the Village Inn where he
worked for 9 years. He started here as on-call and
has now accepted a half-time sanitation position in
Dining. James is hard working, very dependable and
looks forward to his position with Dining.
Jim Gaynor - Custodian - Physical Jim comes to Bates with a background in
Plant
maintenance and supply and since his hire he has
been performing well as a new custodian at Merrill
Gym. Due to current position vacancies, Jim has
only worked in the Athletic area but will soon
venture out to other buildings on campus. He will be
attending a Certified Pool Operator's course this
month. Welcome to Bates - Jim!
Olya Gayazova - Visiting Asst.
Professor - Political Science
Olya comes to Bates with a degree from Rutgers.
Her research has included: theoretical accounts of
global politics and justice.
Tom Gendreau - HVAC
Technician - Physical Plant
Tom comes to Bates with 12 years experience in the
HVAC (heating/ventilating/air conditioning) field.
He was previously employed as a field service
technician for a contractor. Tom lives in Litchfield
and is a single father of a 9-year old son.
Doug Ginevan - Asst. Vice
President for Financial Planning
and Analysis - Finance
Doug comes to Bates after spending many years at
Aramark Facility Services where he was most
recently the Vice President of Operations. He
received a bachelor of arts degree in history at
Middlebury College and a master's degree in business
administration at the University of Pittsburgh's
Joseph J. Katz Graduate School of Business. Doug
lives in Falmouth with his wife and two children.
Brian Greeley - Custodian Physical Plant
Brian comes to Bates from the Lee Auto Mall where
he worked for 5 years. He enjoys coaching soccer
and hockey, loves 80's music. Brian has two dogs - a
boxer and a shiba inu.
Lee Griffin - Custodian - Physical Lee has been in the custodial work force in the local
Plant
area for many years and is a complimenting addition
to our current custodial staff. His primary role is
covering for staff on vacation, stick or leave of
absence. Lee also works a routine schedule of
covering Pettengill Hall on Friday and Saturday's.

Fiona Halloran - Visiting Asst.
Professor - History
Fiona comes to Bates with a degree from the
University of California, Los Angeles. Her research
has included: discussion of 19th century focusing on
value (and problems) of biography in American
History and examinations of the formation of
American identity.
Jay Hartshorn - Head Coach of
Women's Cross Country &
Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field Athletics
Jay received her B.A. in government from Colby
College and her M.S. in exercise and sport studies
from Smith College. Since 2001, she has been
employed at Syracuse University as the top assistant
in the program. Prior to joining the staff at Syracuse,
Jay was the assistant cross country, indoor and
outdoor track and field coach at Smith College She
has also worked in NESCAC for her alma mater as
the assistant indoor and outdoor track and field
coach. As a student, Jay was a highly accomplished
runner and an outstanding student. A three time
NCAA All-American in indoor and outdoor track and
field, she was also a U.S.T.C.A. Academic AllAmerican.
Amy Hood - Desktop Application Amy joined the Desktop Support Group in August
& Support Analyst - ILS
coming to Bates from AWAP (Abused Women's
Advocacy Project) in Lewiston. When she is not
installing computers for Bates, Amy, a resident of
Livermore, enjoys playing golf and spending time
with her 5-year old niece.
Kacey Houston - Residence Life
& Student Activities Assistant DOS
Kacey comes to Bates from Williams College. She
has been working hard on housing and residence life
ever since arriving at Bates. We are very lucky to
have her.
Jane Jawor - Library
Assistant/Public Services - ILS
Jane is a graduate from the University of Tennessee
with a degree in Education and she has started her
Masters degree in Education. Her background
includes teaching, coaching, social services and job
development for individuals with disabilities. For the
past three years, Jane has been an Asst. Coach of the
Women's Track and Field team at Bates and had
coached at the high school level for 10 years prior.
While coaching here - she coached Liz Wanless - the
teams' first national champion.
Sofya Khagi - Visiting Instructor - Sofya comes to Bates with a degree from Dartmouth.
Russian
Her research has included: Russian film and
literature.
Steve Konezny - Visiting Asst.
Professor - Physics
Steve comes to Bates with a degree from University
of Rochester. His research has included: the study of
charge injection, transport and recombination
processes in organic materials used for electronics
applications.
Walt Lach - Assistant in
Instruction - Chemistry
Walt was previously employed in nuclear power, the
Navy and the petroleum industry. He is married and
lives in Brunswick. Walt's interests include fishing,
hunting, mushrooms and astronomy.
Anne Lewis - Asst. Rowing
Coach - Athletics
Anne comes to Bates after a year working with the
Boston University Women's program. A 2004
graduate of Williams College (Physics & Political
Science, Cum Laude) she was a NCAA champion in
2002 and a bronze medalist in 2004. Along the way,
Anne garnered two National Scholar Athlete awards,
the Williams Senior Oarswomen of the year award
and was the team captain in her senior year. Since
2004, she has been working in Boston as a consultant
with The Center on Media and Child Health,
Children's Hospital.
Gerald Lewis - Custodian Physical Plant
Gerald worked at McDonalds in Farmington for 20
years before coming to Bates. He enjoys walking,
fishing and spending time with his son - Ken.
Howie Martin - Library
Assistant/Public Services - ILS
Howie graduated from Bates in '03 with a BA in
English and is a former Ladd Library student
assistant. He worked most recently with the Yankee
Clipper and the Boy Scouts of American in Haverhill,
MA where he was active in fundraising and event
planning. Howie also has experience teaching at the
middle school level.
Monica McCusker - Office
Coordinator - Bookstore
Monica comes to Bates from Bradco Chair
Company. She is already ably managing the "back
office". Outside of her bookstore life, Monica plays
the fife, participates in Civil War period reenactments, enjoys time spend with her family and
still manages to get out for an occasional recreational
run.
Chris McDowell - Asst. Professor Chris comes to Bates with a degree from Yale. Her
- Theater
research has included: development of a history of
period styles.
Jess Mellen - Residence Life &
Student Activities Assistant DOS
Jess comes to Bates from Connecticut College and is
already enjoying her time at Bates. She is working
with the Ronj, the new Game Room project and also
with the JA's and RC's. Jess has been a great addition
to the Dean of Students Office.
Karen Melvin - Asst. Professor History
Karen comes to Bates with a degree from the
University of California, Berkeley. Her research has
included: migration, the environment and society in
Latin America, urban history, religion and the church.
Sue Meservier - Staff Assistant Alumni & Parent Programs
Sue joined the A&PP staff this summer after
spending a number of years at home raising her
family. She lives in Poland, is the mother of 3 active
girls and currently serves as a soccer coach for one of
her daughter's teams.
Ryan Mockler - Den Worker Dining Services
Ryan graduated from Lewiston High School this past
year. He's the new guy in the Den - that's why the
burgers are so good!
Hiroya Miura - Instructor - Music Hiroya comes to Bates with a degree from
Columbia. His research has included: composition
for acoustic instruments and computer music.
Brandon Morin Catering/Delivery - Dining
Services
Brandon came to Bates straight out of high school
and had been working as an on-call for a few years.
His hard work and dedication to Bates Dining is what
propelled him into a full-time position with the
Catering Department. Brandon's interests are outdoor
sports and classic rock and roll.
Ichiro Noguchi - Lecturer Japanese
Ichiro comes to Bates with a degree from the
University of Indiana. His research has included:
Japanese and Chinese linguistics.
Mark Nordberg - Assistant in
Instruction - Physics
Mark graduated from Bates in '85 with degrees in
both physics and music. Now back at Bates, he
oversees the labs for Physics 107-108 sequence and
provides support for the First-Year Seminar 274.
Mark's musical background is as a violist and more
recently he has turned his attention to Viola da
Gamba.
Jay Patterson - Assistant Dean Admissions
Although he is not far removed from his days as a
student at Bates, Jay '02 has gained a wealth of
experience in the "real world". He returns to Bates
from New York where he worked as program director
for a private non-profit called the "Boys' Club of
New York". Following graduation, he served as a
writing fellow for Wiretap Magazine, an online
youth activist publication in San Francisco.
George Perkins - Visiting Assoc.
Professor - Economics
George came to Bates with a degree from Boston
College. His research has included: public finance,
not-for-profit organizations, monetary and financial
economics.
Eliot Pitney - Assistant Rowing
Coach - Athletics
Eliot is a '01 graduate of Connecticut College
(Economics and Environmental Studies) and was a
four year varsity rower for the Connecticut College
rowing team. A captain in his senior year, he went
on to compete with the Pennsylvania Athletic Club
Rowing Association's elite program. During his time
at Penn AC, Eliot won two gold, one silver and one
bronze at the US National Championships. Since
2001, he has been working as an environmental
consultant with the URS Corporation.
Melinda Plastas - Visiting Asst.
Professor - Women and Gender
Studies
Melinda comes to Bates with a degree from the State
University of New York, Buffalo. Her research has
included: history of race and gender in the U.S.,
social movements, twentieth-century African
American women's history and gender and
transnationalism.
Joel Richard - Coordinator Alumni & Parent Programs
Joel recently joined A&PP and is in charge of the
class volunteer program. He and his wife have
recently relocated from the Boston area having
inherited his wife's ancestoral home in Freeport. A
1997 graduate of Keene State College, Joel has spent
the last six years working in the Freshman Dean's
Office at Harvard College.
George Romano - Coordinator for George supervises Area Coordinators and Assistants
Academic Administration - DOF in Instruction. He comes to us after 14 years in the
Air Force, most recently as a captain in the Air
National Guard at Pease Air National Guard Base in
New Hampshire. George completed his B.S. in
Administration of Justice at the University of Maine,
Augusta.
David Scobey - Director of the
Harward Center for Community
Partnerships and the Donald W.
and Ann M. Harward Professor of
Community Partnerships
David comes to Bates from the University of
Michigan where he was Assoc. Professor of
Architecture and Director of the Arts of Citizenship
Program. He graduated from Yale University with a
doctorate in American Studies. He was a Rhodes
Scholar, a Senior Research Fellow at the Smithsonian
Institution's National Museum of American History
and the recipient of many other fellowships and
honors. David has spoken and written extensively
about community-engaged learning. His book Arts
of Citizenship: Higher Education and Civic Culture
is scheduled to be published by the University of
Pennsylvania Press this year. His well-regarded
study, Empire City: The Making and Meaning of the
New York City Landscape, was published by Temple
University Press in 2002. Metropolis and Nation:
Politics, Culture, and Space in Nineteeth-Century
America is forthcoming from University of
Pennsylvania Press.
Kristen Sebbens - Staff Assistant - Kristen is a graduate of the University of Missouri
Alumni & Parent Programs
and was previously a special projects manager at
Monsanto in St. Louis. Her fiancé was relocated
from General Mills to Hannaford recently and they
reside in Gray.
Caleb Shor - Visiting Asst.
Professor - Math
Caleb comes to Bates with a degree from Boston
University. His research has included: algebraic
geometry, coding theory and number theory.
Hongjun Su - Visiting Asst.
Professor - Chinese
Hongjun comes to Bates with a degree from the
University of Iowa. Her research has included:
women's studies, Asian American studies, American
drama and autobiography.
Damien Tougas - Web
Programmer/Analyst - ILS
Damien is an experienced programer/analyst
specializing in internet systems. ILS is excited to
have him and his skills in our Web Technology
Services department.
Monika Ullian Programmer/Analyst - ILS
A graduate of Macalester College, Monika had no
idea she would end up back in school after all these
years. During her career as an IT professional, she
has worked with many different technologies
including Java, XML, PeopleSoft and Lotus Notes
but considers herself a data geek at heart. Monika is
quite happy to be supporting Oracle databases again.
In her free time, she gardens, watches Joss Whedon
DVDs, drinks way too much coffee and the enjoys
the company of her husband and son.
Andy Walter - Interim Sports
Information Director - OCMR
Andy reports news, scores, statistics and stories
about Bates' 30 varsity teams. He oversees the
athletics web site, prepares press releases after most
contests, reports a comprehensive set of statistics to
NESCAC offices and produces game programs and
athletic recruitment publications. Andy has reported
sports for Massachusetts and New York daily
newspapers from the community level to NCAA
Division I Syracuse football and basketball. He has a
master's from John Hopkins and a B.A. in English
from Grinnell. Andy is married to Jay Hartshorn,
head coach for women's track and cross country and
the live in Auburn.
Barbie Ware - Security Officer Security
Barbie holds an Associates degree in criminal
justice. She has attended the 100 hour pre-service
course at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy as
well as the Victim Witness Academy at the Muskie
School of Public Service, University of Southern
Maine. In addition, Barbie has been extremely active
in community policing activities in her hometown.
Gabe Ycas - Assistant in
Instruction - Physics
Gabe comes to us from Reed College in Oregon
where he completed his Bachelor degree in Physics
last spring. His primary responsibilities include the
laboratories for general education courses. Gabe is
also involved in developing laboratory activities for
the First-Year Seminar 314. He enjoys Irish music,
contradance and outdoor activities.
Darcy York - iModules
Coordinator - Alumni & Parent
Programs
Darcy is an '05 graduate of Bates and is in a position
which puts her in the front lines of developing a new
on-line community for Bates alumni and parents.
You may have seen the products of Darcy' earlier
work--in her senior year, in conjunction with her
membership of the Sesquicentennial Steering
Committee, she produced a number of poster-sized
photos of Bates in years past and had them displayed
around campus as a way to heighten awareness of
Bates' history during the year-long 150th celebration.
