BCCC Library CITING SOURCES FROM TURABIAN STYLE (8th Edition) Quick Guide to Documentation: Turabian System What styles are available? Bibliography style – (used in this handout) used in the humanities and social sciences (this is the style described in this handout). It uses footnotes at the end of the page and a bibliography at the end of the document. Reference List style – (not shown in this handout) used in social sciences and natural sciences. It uses parenthetical citations which include the author’s last name and date of publication. At the end of the document is a list of references, where the full bibliographic information is given. Two steps in documentation for the Bibliography style: 1. Footnotes – You provide a superscript after the quote and provide sufficient information for the reader to locate the source. Usually, this means giving the author’s name, title, publication information and page numbers. In the examples below, the letter “N” represents sample footnotes for the various sources. Footnotes use a first-line indent. 2. The Bibliography list is alphabetized according to the author’s last name (or title if no author is given) and includes information about the publication. Each citation must be single-spaced and indented with a hanging indent (5 spaces) after the first line of each entry. Include a blank line between citations. In the examples below, the letter “B” represents sample bibliography entries for the various sources. Bibliography entries contain hanging indents.
