12/15/08 Press Release For immediate release The North East Organic Farming Association of Rhode Island will host a special evening with farmer and author Elizabeth Henderson. “Local, Organic, and Fair Farming” will be the topic of her speech. Elizabeth farms at Peacework Organic Farm in Wayne County, N.Y. and has been producing organically grown vegetables for the fresh market for over 25 years. She is a founding member of NOFA/Mass, a longtime member of the board of NOFA-NY, and represents NOFA in national discussions of organic standards. She's active in land protection and agricultural justice issues. Her writings on organic agriculture appear in The Natural Farmer and the NOFA-NY Food, Farms and Folks, and she is one of the authors of The Real Dirt: Farmers Tell about Organic and Low-Input Practices in the Northeast, lead author of Sharing the Harvest: A Guide to Community Supported Agriculture (Chelsea Green), and wrote the NOFA manual Whole Farm Planning (NOFA, 2003) with Karl North. Her farm, Peacework Organic Farm, supplies vegetables to the 300 member Genesee Valley Organic Community Supported Agriculture Project, in its twentieth year in 2008. She is one of the first three NE-SARE Farmer Educators. The event is Friday January 16 at 7pm at Brown University; SmithBuonanno Hall 106, 95 Cushing Street, Providence. The Hall is near the corner of Meeting Street and Brown Street and is more easily accessed from Meeting Street. NOFA members are admitted FREE. Nonmembers cost $5. Farms that are members of NOFA are welcome to set up a table with information at this event. This is a good chance for farms to market their CSA programs. This is the first of an upcoming series of speakers on issues that relate to organic farming. This event will also be the start of the “Organic Matters in Rhode Island” campaign.
