Applied Hydraulics Pipe Flow Lab Cashman Fall 2001 1. What size asphalted cast-iron pipe is needed to carry water at a discharge of 12 cfs and with a head loss of 4 ft. per 1000 ft. of pipe? Write a program (fortran or spreadsheet) to calculate this so that you can size any type of pipe for a given discharge, headloss and length. 2. Determine the headloss for a pressurized pipe with the following characteristics: cast iron pipe (new) one mile in length, 12” in diameter at a flowrate of 1200 gallons per minute (with water at 65 degrees). Compare your results using the Hazen-Williams equation to the Darcy-Weisbach equation. Write a program (fortran or spreadsheet) so that you can determine the headloss for a pipe with both the Darcy-Weisbach and the Hazen-Williams equations. Recalculate the headloss at a flowrate of 3000 gpm. Explain the differences in your values. Play with Flowmaster at home (from Haestad methods) to compare your results. 3. Problem 4.3.4 in your book (also an assigned homework problem).
