JUNIORS, YOU ARE AT A POINT IN YOUR LIVES WHERE
ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE—START PLANNING FOR YOUR
FUTURE TODAY!
The college selection process is often an overwhelming experience.
Starting early and having specific criteria in mind will help juniors
as they begin their college search.
Academics- Understanding your own learning style is a key
component in your college search-different colleges offer different
programs, curricula, teaching methods, classroom atmospheres
and academic advising. Find your style by asking yourself these
questions:
No. 7
Student Life- Obviously your primary responsibility will be your
academic pursuits, but almost as much learning can happen
outside of the classroom. Consider the following questions in order
to set your college criteria:
* What activities meant the most to you in high school that you
would like to continue in college?
* Would you participate in intercollegiate or intramural sports?
* Would you take advantage of clubs and organizations?
Financial Considerations- When selecting colleges, cost of
attendance is often an important factor. Some questions to
consider are:
* Do research and extra learning opportunities interest you?
* Are smaller class sizes and more collaboration with your teachers
important to you?
*Does your GPA, class rank and SAT scores match the college’s
average acceptance?
*What are the costs for tuition?
*What are the room and board fees?
*Is there a difference in the costs for in-state and out-of-state
students?
*What percent of students receive financial aid?
Size, Location, and Type- When it comes to selecting a college, it is
MAKE A LIST: If you have given careful thought to the above
questions, then you can narrow your search to those schools that
meet your criteria. Do the schools you thought you were interested
in still measure up?
important to find the “best fit” for who you are. Consider the
following questions in order to set your college criteria:
* Would you like a large, small or mid-sized college?
* Would you like to go to school in a small town, mid-sized town or
a big city?
* Do you want to go far from home and immerse yourself in a
totally new place or do you value being able to return home
frequently?
*Do you want to attend a public college, private college or technical
school?
VISIT: Your top schools can appear to be very similar when you
look at them “by the numbers”. Even the most honest websites and
brochures cannot give you the true feeling of what it is really like
to be on campus. Visit your top choices with your criteria in mind.
Talk to professors, talk to students, talk to everyone you meet! See
for yourself and trust your instincts!
