NC 2006 Area Information and Attractions How to get there: Asheville is located at the junction of I-40 and I-26 with the I-240 connector through downtown. I-26 is also shown on maps as US 23 from I-81 at Johnson City, TN. The Blue Ridge Parkway has four accesses in the Asheville area. The Asheville Airport is 14 miles south of downtown off I-26. The Greenville-Spartanburg Airport (South Carolina) is about 70 miles from Asheville. Free maps of the Asheville area are available at the Asheville Chamber of Commerce (I-240 Exit 4C), the Blue Ridge Conference Center (Super 8) and most motels. Downtown Asheville: Park at one of the three parking decks. Get your area map and start walking. The Grove Arcade, built in the 1920s, is a good place to start. Then head to the other side of the city to the City Center Plaza, with plenty to see in between. Spend a “Night on the Town” with plenty of action, places to eat and live entertainment. (A favorite of locals is Jack of the Wood Tavern, an English-themed brew pub and features live music.) Biltmore Estate: This estate is a 250 room chateau built by George Vanderbilt more than a century ago. There are 250 acres of gardens to enjoy, as well as a winery, shops and restaurants. The cost is $35 per person if you tell them you are a Highpointer. Grove Park Inn: Your visit is not complete without a visit to the world famous inn, built with massive boulders in 1913. While there, ask for directions to see the photograph display of the construction. North Carolina Arboretum: (Friday, August 4) Located in the Pisgah National Forest, there are over 400 acres of forest and 50 acres of gardens with easy hiking trails. A new attraction is the Bonsai Exhibit Hall. Bring something to eat or visit the lunch area where soup and sandwiches are served. Meet at the Blue Ridge Conference Center at 9:00 where you can share a ride. The entrance fee is $6 per car. Meet at the visitor’s center where we will have leaders to take you on some of the great hikes or get a map at the visitor’s center and plan your own tour of the Arboretum. A MUST SEE, SAY OUR LOCALS! Driving Tour on the Blue Ridge from the French Broad River, South to Mt. Pisgah: The Mt. Pisgah Trail is a steep climb to the top of the 5,271 foot mountain with 360 degree views. Access it from the Mt. Pisgah parking area at milepost 407.6. The trail begins at the far end of the parking area. You may want to stop at the Pisgah Inn Restaurant about 1 mile further south. They serve excellent food. If you have time you may want to continue south to route 276 and take a left down through the Pisgah Forest to the Cradle of Forestry. This was the first forestry school in America. They have an excellent exhibit hall and museum as well as an outdoor exhibit. Down the road is the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and the Fish Hatchery. Continue to route 280 and turn left. You will pass the Asheville Airport just before you get to I-26. Take I-26W to I-40E or I-240 and you have completed a very scenic loop. More information will be at the Conference Center (Super 8) to help you plan.
