ASM: Language Arts

Age/Grade 9th – 12th Reading & Writing Enrichment (Read 180, remedial)
Subject Area(s)_English/Literature____
Unit Macbeth___
Lesson Title: Conclusion of Macbeth
Estimated Time: 90 minutes
Purpose/Rationale for lesson: This is the concluding lesson of the Macbeth unit. This lesson includes the final
exam with a timeline and questions regarding the characters in the play. I have devised a Jeopardy character
game to review the characteristics, motives and ambitions of each character. This should help students become
immersed in the players of the story. By playing a game, I am hoping to bring their understanding and
enjoyment to a new level.
Essential Question: How do an individual’s core values impact his/her relationship with society and
him/herself?
Unit Question: What is the plot and theme of Macbeth, and who are the characters involved?
Lesson or Content Question: How can we critically review Macbeth and the characters that take part in the
story?
Goal: To review the play through discussion and a Jeopardy game.
Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to correct capitalization and comma mistakes in a sentence.

DOL on the board
Jeopardy game
Verbal review
Independent reading
Exit card
The following DOL on the board when the students come into the classroom –
the Cleveland Indians are named after Louis Sockolexis whom, was the first native American to
play professional baseball.
Before we go over the DOL for the day, I will inform students of the day’s objectives and verbally tell them the
agenda.
We have been going over capitalization, and punctuation for the daily oral language lesson each day. I am
moving towards focusing on commas.
I will also remind students about the fundamentals of commas in that they are used to indicate a pause or a
change in thought. Commas make reading easier because words do not run together.
Corrections: The Cleveland Indians are named after Louis Sockolexis, who was the first Native
American to play professional baseball. (5 corrections)
I will tell students that who and whom can be difficult to differentiate. In this sentence, there are really 2
separate sentences connected by “who,” however, in this case “whom” is not the object of the verb “was” and
“Who was the first Native American to play professional baseball” is an independent clause. “whom” is
always used after a preposition.
(15 minutes)
B. The Jeopardy character game
I will tell students that we are going to break into two teams, and I will divide the class in half.
The Jeopardy character game is designed to help students remember traits and
accomplishments of the characters in the play. There will be prizes for the team that wins the
game. The questions for the Jeopardy game are as follows:
