Spanish II
2015-2016 School Year
1.
Course Description
The course is a full year course for 9th through 12th graders and students will
receive one credit. This course has a prerequisite of Language for Native Speakers I.
This course is a continuation of Language for Native Speaker I. Speaking, reading,
writing, and listening skills are taught at a higher level of difficulty in order to enable the
student to communicate more precisely and effectively in Spanish. This course
emphasizes short stories, novels, plays, poetry and traditions. Students will engage in
activities that incorporate culture, history, tradition, religion, and nationality related to the
home language.

Course Outline
a. 1st nine weeks- greetings, numbers, colors, family members, definite and
indefinite articles, verbs tener/estar and ser, nationalities, the verb gustar,
present tense of regular verbs, present sten changing verbs poder, querer
and servir food/restaurant.
b. 2nd nine weeks- direct/indirect object pronouns, preterite of AR, ER, IR
reflexive verbs, present progressive, present tense of irregular verbs,
irregular preterite, irregular IR preterit stem changing verbs, weather.
c. 3rd nine weeks-Preterit CAR, GAR and ZAR verbs, irregular stem
changing verbs in the preterite decir/poder/servir/traer, preterite of
oir/creer/leer/caerse,
d. 4th nine weeks- imperfect tense of ar/er/ir verbs, formal commands,
afirmative and negative words, review preterite, review imperfect, and
introduce the subjunctive

Course Goals
a. The purpose of this class is to enable the student to do the following:
i. Standard 1, By speaking, writing and or signing, students will
express themselves in a culturally appropriate manner for many
purposes.
ii. Standard 2, By listening observing, reading, and discussing,
students will comprehend and interpret oral, written and visual
messages on a variety of topics.
iii. Standard 3, Students will understand the relationship between
language and culture.
iv. Standard 4, Students will develop an understanding of other
cultures, including such elements as: value system, languages,
traditions, and individual perspectives.
v. Standard 5, Students will understand how language works.
vi. Standard 6, Students will use the language studied to reinforce and
expand knowledge of other disciplines.
vii. Standard 7, Students will use the language studied for personal
enjoyment, personal enrichment, and employability.

Grading Scale (See DHS handbook)
Homework/Daily Participation/Effort = 65%
Assessments/Projects/Oral Presentations = 25%
Bellwork/Notebooks = 10%
If the student scores under a minimum proficient grade (70%) then he/she is
required to re-take the assessment or material covered within the original
assessment. The student has 1 week (7 days) from the date of the assignment retake the assignment, after the 7 day period the original grade earned will be
permanently recorded.
The student will only have the option to improve the earned grade if he/she has
earned the right to improve it. The student must be in good standing with the
course and up to date with his/her notebook in order to have the right to improve
the earned grade. The student has 1 week (7 days) from the date of the
assignment to improve the assignment, after the 7 day period the original grade
earned will be permanently recorded.

Plagiarism—Cheating in any form, including plagiarism, is not tolerated. Any
student caught cheating will receive a zero for that exam and/or risk receiving an
F for the course. Plagiarism is defined as the use without proper
acknowledgement of the ideas, phrases, sentences, or larger units of discourse
taken from the work of another writer or speaker. In standard academic practice, this
means if you copy any more than three consecutive words written or spoken by another,
you must acknowledge the source of these words by using the proper reference notation.

10.
