Angling Club
Newsletter No.86
Winter 2014
In Memory Of Adrian Gove
1962-2014
Dear Member,
We have not had a newsletter for, I can’t believe it, almost a year.
Although we did have a couple of e-newsletters emailed out. We are all so
busy and in all honesty Facebook has been working so well in
communicating with all our membership. A lot of the information is also
being relayed onto our own website, albeit a little later.
It is so sad when you lose a friend for whatever the reason, even worse
when they have so many friends who would have helped out. Our thoughts
go to Callum and the family at this time, Adrian will be missed by the Club
and many of its members. Adrian joined the CMSAC many years ago and
was clearly one of the most successful Mullet anglers in the Club. Even
holding his own at some of the fish-ins he attended with the National
Mullet Club with John Avery. Over the years with an awesome catch
records and even last year with his new Club record Mullet of 7lb 2oz
caught in April and then continuing into December with fish of 4lb 10oz,
5lb 4oz and even 6lb 6oz.
Many members will also have memories of Adrian’s antics on Sark, from
our first trip in 2005 and many others also. Going back in time many
members will also recall Adrian being a prominent figure at the Bastille
competitions in Ilfracombe. We will be putting thoughts together over
the next few months to carry on Adrian’s memory and his link with the
Club.
Our AGM took place late November at The Cricket Club and I am pleased
to report that all members are pleased in the way the Club is being run as
all officers and committee remain the same. The only change on the night
was the introduction of a specimen rating for Golden Grey of 1lb 8oz
from both shore and boat.
Our membership was up on last year to 46 members, extra members as a
direct consequence of Facebook. Competition attendance on the other
hand were at its lowest for many years, perhaps down to the weather this
last year. Although saying that some of our recent events mainly the
Putsborough competition and the Sea Ilfracombe event on the Pier in
September were very successful.
The Treasurer even reported an increase of income over expenditure this
year of £75.34.
Trophy winners for last year and our Club Calendar for 2014 are available
to download from our Club website. We are looking at an exciting Calendar
this year so please support Club events.
Our own Presentation Night is to be held at The London Inn, Braunton on
Saturday March 15th with a start time of 7.00pm. We will be
incorporating Wayne’s slide show on the night and a hot buffet supplied
by The London Inn. We are looking at a cost of £7.00 per head for the
hot buffet which will include Curry/Rice, Chilli/Rice and Cottage Pie/Veg.
With masses of parking in the Inn itself or the main car park just behind.
The following morning has free parking so your vehicle can be left
overnight. This will be a low key event compared to previous years. Let me
or Wayne know of your numbers attending, although I will be emailing
everybody prior to the event for numbers. The presentation night will
include Trophies and Awards taken only to those present so it will be
important to let us know you are going if you are a reciprocate. These will
then be engraved after the event only if you wish.
We have several events throughout the year including Lure fishing, LRF
light rock fishing, a few fixed venue competitions and of course we will
still be running the Ilfracombe Pier Fun Fishing event for juniors, visitors
and members alike. A full calendar is available to download. Keep an eye on
Facebook and our website for other events taking off.
Many thanks to Matt Jeffery and Michael Taylor for their help in our
recent Clovelly event. It’s nice that others can be relied upon.
We have just held our fishing workshop at The Braunton Cricket Club and
was quite well attended by members and new members alike. Many, many
thanks to Kevin and Wayne for their instruction and enthusiasm. Both new
members Dave Hewitt and Andy Teal got a lot out of it including some
rigs made up by Kevin on the night.
If anybody would like to contribute an article or story for the newsletter
please email for the next inclusion.
RAMBLINGS
It’s been a while since the last Newsletter and a lot has happened.
The winter has been a stormy one with fishing curtailed to some extent.
Those that have made the effort and ventured out have enjoyed some
success but have had to work hard for their results. Statistically there is
no way of evaluating results with so many variations to consider.
Hours invested, weather conditions, baits and methods used all
impact upon what is caught, as does of course the amount of fish present.
Fish stocks have in general declined but even this is impacted upon by
natural cycles of fish populations. In my view the only thing to do is get
out there cast a line and see what happens. Fishing is all about
anticipation and participation.
I recently gave an illustrated talk at Lynmouth Pavilion that seemed
to be well received with several items stimulating debate. After the
event a few of us retired to the Rising Sun for a drink and a chat. We got
into a conversation regarding the perceived lack of young people coming
into the sport. Nothing simple here as we analysed each possible reason,
we contemplated that as young anglers we had enjoyed the learning
process. Do we help too much giving all the answers at the start in an
attempt to create instant success? Is success earned too easily not so
rewarding? Is our over protectiveness stifling young people and
preventing them from venturing to the waters edge where there is an
element of danger? As young people we had a fascination with water have
today’s young people lost this? Most accept that today’s technology has
taken young people away from outdoor pursuits like fishing? The cost of
fishing tackle is citied as a barrier to angling? We discussed all of this at
length comparing the young people of today with ourselves at a young age.
Things have changed we agreed, young people today are different! At
this point the conversation was brought to an abrupt halt. Nonsense!
Evolution is not to blame for a lack of young people going fishing,
Evolution takes thousands of year; Mr Darwin said so.
And so after a long protracted debate the answer as to why less
young people go fishing is complex. The majority of anglers are middle
aged and beyond; we have all grown up with it. It was fashionable when we
were young and so we have grown up with a love of fishing. The Angling
Trust works hard to promote angling, the commercial sector will
endeavour to promote the sport for their own ends.
The answer to the future of fishing is so simple. Make it sexy and
trendy, ensure there are fish to catch and young people will discover the
joy of angling and take it forward as we have done. It would be very sad
if today’s ageing generation of anglers failed to pass on the baton.
Perhaps somewhere along the line it all got too serious and we got
so involved in the pursuit of big fish that we allowed the fun to go out of
the sport. Some anglers put so much pressure on themselves to succeed
that they lose all perspective. Yes of course we go fishing to catch fish
but that is not the be all of it! It’s all about the journey. Last year four
of us went to Ireland to fish the famous Copper coast. We set off
brimming with confidence, would we land a double figure bass? Our son
James took it all in his stride not knowing what to expect he just enjoyed
the experience. As he said to me recently; “we spent a week trying and
did not catch what we expected but this apart looking back is it was an
enjoyable experience and you think I would like to do that again:”. Fishing
for many years now I look back and yes I remember a few notable fish
but overall it’s about places and fellow anglers.
At this point its seems appropriate to mention the sad loss of
Adrian Gove who fished with the club for many years. I spent many hours
fishing with Adrian over a number of years and was privileged to enjoy his
company both on the North Devon coast and in the Channel Islands where
we fished for grey mullet. In the past few years Adrian focussed on grey
mullet setting a club record in 2008 with huge grey mullet of 6lb 7oz. He
upped this last year landing an even bigger mullet of 7lb 2oz.
Adrian’s cheerful and enthusiastic presence will be greatly missed by the
club and its members. The written word is often inadequate at such times
and in time memories of Adrian will be less blemished with the sadness of
his premature departure. The number of people who attended the
thanksgiving service on January 29th a testimony to his popularity far
beyond that of the angling community.
As spring arrives I always treat it as a new beginning a time to look
forward with optimism to those long evenings the chance of spring ray,
bass, mackerel, smoothhound and a wealth of other opportunities. There
is the chance to wield both the big rods and the lighter tackle. The lure
angler will once again enjoy clear water and the sight of bass attacking
the latest lures. Grey mullet will be as tantalizing as ever haunting the
estuaries, harbours and open coast. There is much to do if your an angler
and I hope that you will make an effort to join in with a few of the club
events. I am often asked what do we get if we join the club? Well in
answer to that the club is the members and the club collectively provide
what its membership wants. Competitions, trips, meetings, fishing’s all
part of getting anglers together to socialize and learn from each other.
There is of course the benefit of representing a group of anglers if local
issues require this. I would ask all anglers to give thought to what they
want from the club and take part in at least a couple of events.
