Solve linear equations and linear inequalities. 3. Solve application problems requiring linear equations with one variable. 4. Perform operations using integer exponents. 5. Add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomials. 6. Factor polynomials and solve quadratic equations by factoring. 7. Reduce, multiply and divide rational expressions. 8. Graph linear equations and inequalities, and write equations of lines. REQUIRED MATERIALS: You must have daily computer and internet access and basic computer skills. You must purchase a MyMathLab access code and register in MyMathLab. The options for purchasing the materials are: Online Textbook Only: Purchase MML registration code packet at the bookstore or online. Online and paper copy Textbook: Purchase a package that includes both MML registration code and a three hole binder text book. This package will be available in the Metro bookstores. Textbook Title: Edition: Author: Publisher: “Elementary Algebra for College Students” Eighth Edition (2010) Allen R. Angel Prentice-Hall Students are required to maintain a notebook of their written work for all homework assignments and quizzes. Calculators will be allowed on tests ONLY IN CHAPTER 3. Calculators on cell phones, graphing calculators, and other calculators with advanced problem solving capabilities are not allowed. SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS: The Student Solutions Manual for the text is available in the Math Centers. CLASS STRUCTURE: The daily class period will consist of: 1. Review of material from previous classes meetings. 2. Presentations of new material and topics. 3. Discussion, questions and answers on homework and new material. ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT WORK ASSIGNMENTS: Daily assignments are listed in the Schedule of Assignments at the end of this syllabus. The student is required to complete the assignments by the next class period. Work for all assignments must be kept in the student’s math notebook which must be brought to class each period. MyMathLab Quizzes There are 2 attempts for each quiz. The highest score will be recorded. Quizzes are timed. Once you start you must finish, and you must stay on that assignment. If you try to open another page, MyMathLab may close and you will not be able to continue. Quiz scores are recorded in the MML grade book. To review a specific quiz, go to the grade book and then click on Review. MyMathLab Homework Complete each HW assignment as soon as you have studied the corresponding section of the textbook. You have unlimited time to complete each HW and you can resume numerous times until you complete it. You will be allowed up to three attempts for each question. Click Save when you have completed the assignment or need to stop. You may revisit an assignment any time up to the due date and continue where you left off if you click on Save each time you need to leave. Homework scores are recorded in the MML grade book. To review a homework assignment, go to the grade book and then click on Review. Final Assessment Quiz A closed book, comprehensive quiz will be given during the last week of class. The score on this quiz is included in the quiz average that must be at least 70% to earn a passing grade in this class. Tests Six in-class, individually administered, closed book tests will be given. Each test will be announced in advance. A minimum of 80% is required on EACH of these tests to earn a passing grade in this class. Retake Tests: The student is allowed a total of four retakes to attempt to raise the score of any tests on which he/she scores less than 80%. Retake tests must be completed within one week of the date the test was handed back. Make-up Test Procedures: If a student is unable to take a test at the scheduled time, the student must contact the instructor within 24 hours of the date the test was administered in order to qualify to take the test. The make-up test must be taken prior to the next class meeting. Each student is allowed ONE make-up test with no penalty. After that, the student will use up one of their retake options to make-up tests not taken at the scheduled time. Make-up and retake tests will be administered in the testing center. You must have a photo I.D. and arrive at least 2 hours prior to close to take your test. Please contact the testing center to make an appointment to take your test. GRADING POLICY: P = Pass R = Re-enroll F = Fail FX = Absence-related failure The student has earned 80% or better on each of the required tests, an 80% homework average, a 70% quiz average, and has attended at least 80% of the scheduled classes. The student has not met the requirements for passing, but has made significant progress. The student has attempted but not earned 80% or better on each test, has earned at least a 60% average on homework, a 50% quiz average, and has attended at least 70% of the scheduled classes. The student has not met the academic requirements listed above for the R grade, but has attended 70% of the scheduled classes. FX is a final grade given to a student who stops attending a class, does not return, and fails. A grade of P or R will not affect the student’s grade point average. An F or FX will lower the student’s GPA. A grade of P is required to enroll in a 1000 numbered Math class at MCC. MAINTENANCE OF STUDENT RECORDS: Graded materials will be returned within two class sessions. Students are encouraged to keep any returned graded papers in case a discrepancy arises. Retake tests will be on file in the instructor’s office for a minimum of one quarter following the quarter in which the course was completed. This is in accordance with Course Grade Appeal Procedures outline in the Metropolitan Community College Catalog. All work done in MyMathLab will be available for at least one quarter following the end of this quarter. ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING PROGRAM: Metropolitan Community College is committed to continuous improvement of teaching and learning. You may be asked to help us to accomplish this objective. For example, you may be asked to respond to surveys or questionnaires.
