Tel.: (860) 832-2887 E-mail: moralesa@ccsu.edu REQUIRED TEXTS: -Mosaicos: text, workbook and lab manual. -Spanish-English dictionary (recommended) DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: This course is part of the first year experience in Spanish and is specially designed for students who have had no previous contact with the language or no more than one year of high school study. The aim is to develop the four basic skills (listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing), and to prepare students for further study in the language. The discussion of distinctive cultural aspects of the Hispanic world is an integral part of this course. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the course, successful students will be able to communicate in highly predictable common daily settings, and have achieved a mastery of the grammatical concepts and vocabulary through study and continuous oral and written practice. At the end of the semester the student should be able to: Introducing oneself and others Greetings and good-byes Asking for and providing information Expressing needs Asking about and expressing location Asking about and describing persons, places, and things Expressing where and when events take place Expressing likes and dislikes Communicating by phone Ordering food in a restaurant Making suggestions and future plans Identifying and describing family members Describing physical and emotional states Expressing preferences, desires and feelings Expressing possession Expressing how long events have been going on Expressing ongoing actions 1 ATTENDANCE: Attendance is mandatory. Any absence in excess of three will result in the lowering of the student’s final semester grade by two points for each absence. The instructor will only accept excuses issued by the Office of Student Affairs and received within a week of the student’s return to class. Regular tardiness will be treated in the same manner as absences. MAKE-UPS: No make-ups will be given. No late homework will be accepted. All homework and assignments must be handed in on the due day (see class schedule for details). MEANS OF ASSESMENT AND GRADES: 1. Chapter quizzes. Average of 3 tests 30% 2.
