Incentive Points: play report form I read Wicked a book by Gregory Maguire that has been made into a Broadway play. It takes place in the Land of Oz and is applicable to any time period. In the preliminary situation, Elphaba is born, with a somewhat odd deformation; she is green and a very thin, bony girl. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and are struggling for citizen rights, munchkinlanders are little people who lead comfortable lives, and Elphaba, a sweet intelligent girl evolves into the well known and infamous Wicked witch of the West. Elphaba grows up somewhat shunned by society. She is made fun of at school and is always watching over her disabled sister, fighting for animal rights, and conducting science experiments. She is a misunderstood creature who challenges good vs. evil and accepted vs. the unaccepted. Elphaba goes into hiding to work for the animals and to stop the injustices of the world. One thing leads to another and Elphaba encounters Dorothy who comes in possession of very dangerous weapons. Elphaba has no choice but to use any means to disarm Dorothy from the weapons. The protagonists are Elphaba, Dr. Dillamond, Boq, and Fire. The antagonists are Madam Morrible, the wizard, and those who work for the wizard. The major characters include Elphaba, Nessarose, Dorothy, and Fire. The secondary characters are Madam Morrible, Glinda, Elphaba’s friends from school, and Dorothy’s company. The minor characters are Elphaba’s family, Nanny, and those from Vinkus. The author’s message is that we must support human rights and we cannot judge by appearances and actions. We must get to know a person and understand there thoughts and ways of thinking first. In the beginning, it was a bit hard to get into Wicked, however, later on, the book entranced me and I thought it was funny, imaginative, and fantastical book. The hidden allegory was clever and powerful. I think that this is a credible book. The characters are fictional, but came alive throughout the descriptions and actions. Incentive points: live performance report I attended Broadway’s performance of Chicago in New York City during spring break. The set design and lighting contributed to the production. The set was somewhat scarce, so the acting and movement really shined. The one thing that distinguished the set was that the orchestra was actually on the stage at all times and sometimes member of the orchestra had a few lines in the show! It was fresh and unique. The lighting was basic, but strengthened the mood of the show. The costumes were almost completely black and white. This was appropriate to the show. The women wore mainly skimpy outfits and the men wore suits or unbutton shirts. The stark colors of the costumes added to the atmosphere show and each piece and person seemed to fit in well with the background/ play. The two main actresses were amazing. They had great attitude, wonderful voices, and were bewitching. They were extremely believable and seemed very comfortable with their roles. Each cast member clearly had his or her own unique interpretation of his or her character, which made it fun to watch. The movement and dancing were not overly flashy in the show, but also not scarce. The movement was extremely well synchronized making it more enjoyable. The actors used a wide range of movement, and levels. They also used their voices and volume to create different levels and emotions. All the actors worked well together and there was defiantly a sense of ensemble acting. The audience clearly enjoyed the production as much as the actors enjoyed it. The audience was great, cheering, clapping, laughing etc. The overall effect of the production was grand. The theme of the show was clear. It symbolized that with the right people, and a little manipulation rules become very flexible and can be manipulated to your benefit. It also symbolizes that one must live life to the fullest. It was memorable when the conductor of the orchestra had a few lines and interacted with the actors! The singing and the dancing were memorable because they were filled with emotion and talent. Incentive Points: play report form I watched Pride and Prejudice the movie based on the book by Jane Austen. It takes place in England around the late 1700’s, early 1800’s. In the first situation, Elizabeth and her sisters are to go to the ball, that Mr. Bingley will be attending. Mrs. Bennet is trying to have her daughters married before her husband dies since all five of her children are female, they won’t inherit any of their father's money. Smart and sharp Elizabeth, the heroine in this book, develops an immediate annoyance for the arrogant Mr. Darcy. Darcy's friend, Mr. Bingley, falls madly in love with Elizabeth's sister Jane, who is astonishingly beautiful and shy. One thing leads to another and it seems that Mr. Darcy complicated things for Elizabeth’s family. He also reveals the he loves Elizabeth. After some drama, Elizabeth realizes and discovers that what Darcy had done is actually helping her family quite a bit. The protagonists are Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy, Mr. Bingley, and Elizabeth’s father. The antagonists are the soldier who marries Elizabeth’s sister, Mr. Collins, and Mr. Darcy’s sister. The major characters are Elizabeth, Lydia, and Mr. Darcy. The secondary characters are Mr. Bingley, Mr. Collins, Mr. Darcy’s aunt, and Elizabeth’s family. The minor characters are the townsfolk and Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy’s families. The author’s message is not to judge a book by its cover, and to love. The play shows how people and society are quick to judge and therefore miss out on opportunities. People are also not always honest. I somewhat enjoyed the movie. At times, the movie seemed a bit boring but I think this may have been due to the language and pace of the movie. I do not usually like older classics but the movie was a good adaptation. I think the acting and characters were credible because each one was personal and had his or her own manner of looking at life and interacting wit his or her surroundings. Incentive Points: Play report form I watched Rent the movie based on the Broadway play by Stephen Chbosky and Jonathan Larson. It takes place in the East Village of New York City. In the first situation many people in an apartment building are complaining about the rent cost. The musical is about a group of bohemian friends and their lives, hardships, successes, etc. In the year that follows, the group deals with love, loss, AIDS, and modern day life. The cast includes drag queens, strippers, and struggling artists. Roger is a songwriter who falls in love with a drug-battling roommate, Mimi. Their landowner has promised them and their friends’ space to creatively and artistically grows, but is now threatening them with eviction. Maureen deals with her disloyalty through performance art; her partner, Joanne wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Mark is an aspiring filmmaker who is determined to record the story and life of these friends. Angel and Tom are in a relationship and are later faced with the consequences of AIDS. The protagonists are all of the friends and the antagonists are Benny, the landowner, and at times corporate America and injustices. The major characters are the 6 friends. The secondary characters include Benny and Joanne. There are no real minor characters, just inhabits of New York City. The playwright’s message is to live life to the fullest, and give back to the community. The playwright also seems to encourage liberalism. I really enjoyed this movie. The singing and dancing was wonderful to watch and very eye catching. The plot was also very suspenseful. I think that the characters are credible; they were realistic with real life difficulties and struggles. Incentive points: play report form I watched the Disney version of The Little Mermaid written by Howard Ashman, Anderson, and Alan Menken. The movie takes place in Atlantis and the ocean. The movie could have taken place during any time period. In the preliminary situation Arielle is supposed to be at a performance for her fathers kingdom, but forgets and is exploring the ocean. Arielle defies her father's wishes when she leaves his underwater kingdom to explore the world above the ocean's surface. She meets a handsome young prince and falls desperately in love. Ariel, a mermaid, even saves the prince from drowning, after which all he remembers about her is the sound of her beautiful voice. She begins to deeply desire to transform into a human and meet the prince. Ariel foolishly accepts the offer of the evil sea-witch Ursula to trade her voice for a pair of human legs. Ursula thinks that through Arielle she can destroy Arielle’s father, the King Triton, and rule the oceans. Soon Arielle finds herself and her father facing death. Arielle is also in danger of losing her love, the prince. The protagonists include Arielle, Sebastian, Flounder, the Prince, and Triton. The antagonists are Ursula and her two evil eels. The Main characters are Arielle, Ursula, Flounder, Sebastian and the Prince. The secondary characters include the Seagull, the prince’s helpers, the chef, and king Triton. The minor characters are the other creature in the ocean and Arielle’s sisters. I think the playwright’s message is that you have to find your purpose in life and you cannot hide from your destiny. You have to be careful in your choices, but follow your dreams. I loved watching this movie. It was well written with an entrancing and suspenseful plot line. The movie is clearly fantasy but the characters are realistic with human like qualities. This is a modern classic that I think brings adventure into everyone’s life!
