Resolution House Newsletter – Term 5 Welcome to Term 5’s newsletter. With all the bank holidays this term, it has made it very busy for both students and teachers who have been preparing for the exams which started this week. The current Year 11s and 12s have started their study leave and the Year 13s will begin their study leave straight after half term. On Monday 16th May, almost all of the year 7s went on a trip to Rochester Castle and Cathedral. The trip was well planned by Mr Beresford and all the boys had an excellent day out. I also went on the trip and was approached by a member of the public in the Cathedral who said how wonderfully behaved the boys had been. Below you will see some photos which were taken on the trip. In the above two photos the boys are looking around the grounds and answering questions in their booklets. Mr Naughton is explaining about how the Castle was built and how it was fortified. Here the boys and Mr Goodfellow are listening to the organist playing a rendition of the theme tune to Star Wars. 1 Resolution House Newsletter – Term 5 In these photo’s the boys dressed as Monks and learned how they lived when the Cathedral was first built. A big thank you to the following members of staff that helped Mr Beresford on the trip: Mr Naughton, Mr Goodfellow, Mr Barker, Mr Kinrade, Mrs Middleton, Miss Naylor, Miss Featherstone and Mrs Abu Saada. Resolution House Celebrates Achievements Twenty eight students from Resolution House, ranging from year 7 – 10 were rewarded with a trip to Ashford Bowling Centre for their hard work in raising their academic grades since September. Resolution AMF Bowling Trip Report 2011 By Owen Smith, Year 7, RJ6 We left school at about 3.45 in the mini-bus and arrived at AMF Bowling Centre in Ashford at around 4.00. When we got there, we split up into 3 lanes. Here are the main highlights of the evening: Mrs Abu-Saada thrashed everyone in her lane in game 1 Samuel Moorcroft won by miles on his lane in game 1 Owen Smith lost by miles on his lane in game 1 Mr Bristow got lots of fluky strikes Mr Naughton was attracted to the gutter (or so it seems), on his lane Mr Bristow won by 1 point in his lane in game 2 The three teachers got through 2 jugs of coke, We all got a hotdog and a drink (apart from Adam English who had 2 hotdogs!) 3 Resolution House Newsletter – Term 5 So from the evening, the main thing that we can take away is: Mr Naughton likes the gutter And Mr Bristow likes a fluke! Year 11 Thorpe park Trip th On Friday 13 May a large group of year 11 students were taken to Thorpe Park for the day as a treat before they begin their public exams. The boys really enjoyed their day and as it was a Friday (possibly because it was the 13th) the park was fairly quiet, which meant that the queues were short and they didn’t have to wait long for the rides. Staff and students alike went on rides such as Stealth, which goes from 0 to 80 mph in 2.3 seconds and reaches a height of over 200 feet, the Nemesis rollercoaster and Tidal Wave where myself (Mr Hancox) and Mr Maull got absolutely soaked. Mr Castle decided to hold our bags for this ride, wise move! The day went without any problems and all the boys managed to meet up at the main gate at the agreed time of 4pm. Everyone commented on what a good time they’d had and the boys behaved impeccably and were a credit to the school. Thanks to Mr Bristow, Mr Harding, Mr Norman, Mr Maull and Mr Castle for an excellent day. 4 Resolution House Newsletter – Term 5 Year 8 Trip to Rippledown On Tuesday 24th May our year 8 boys had were taken to Rippledown which is an educational outdoor centre in Deal. It was a lovely sunny day and all they boys seemed to have a great time getting involved in the activities. They all had a go at shelter building, team building skills, camouflage and concealment trail and pond dipping, which was a favourite with the boys! They were given nets and buckets then had to find as many different species living in the pond as they could from dragonfly larvae to newts and leeches. The boys were all very well behaved and enjoyed the day. Mrs Gooding £10 Challenge The boys of Resolution House have been doing a £10 challenge whereby each form is given £10 and they must turn this into a profit. The total amount raised will go to the House charity. RJ1s World Cup kicked off on Friday 21st May 2011. The football teams have been drawn with all matches, players and other information on the Resolution notice board. If your son is playing, he must make sure he is available at lunchtime and matches will start a.s.a.p. The matches will carry on next term until there is a winner. RJ2 have been selling iced lollies every Wednesday and this has proved to be very popular with the warmer weather. 5 Resolution House Newsletter – Term 5 Mr Dickens now has a new vocation in life as an Ice Cream man! RJ6 On a warm, sunny Wednesday (and a cold and windy Thursday) RJ6 had their £10 Challenge Wet Sponge Throwing Event. Donations were coming thick and fast to drench our 3 willing volunteers (Messer’s James, Mullan & Rynston) from staff and students alike. Some even donated enough to chuck a whole bucket over them!! In all £54.75 was raised. Special thanks should go to Aaron James, Tom Mullan & Mark Rynston for being such good sports and taking each and every wet, cold sponge, square across the face with good humour! Mr Walton. In next term’s letter we will give you the final total raised by all the tutor groups. Harvey excel at Athletics The Senior District Athletics Championships at the Julie Rose Stadium saw an impressive start to the season for The Harvey Senior Team this year, with pupils winning 21 confirmed events out of 26. Impressive results from Ben Shaw and James Roche in the hurdles resulted in an invitation to Ashford Athletics Club Training and praise from club coaches. Year 11's also did well, as they have done throughout their time at the school from Year 7, such as Johan Ter Horst, James Canter and Conall Forster (the latter two in Resolution House). Their continued commitment to athletics has been the backbone to past teams and is much 6 Resolution House Newsletter – Term 5 appreciated. A big thank you to all boys from Mr Beale for their efforts on the day - well done! Work Experience Most Year 10 students have submitted their choices for their work experience placements this year, and letters have gone out to the employers who have offered places for confirmation. Students will receive confirmation of their placements in the first two weeks after the half-term break, and will then be encouraged to contact the employer to introduce themselves and check any details of the work they will be doing. Work Experience will run this year from Monday 4th to Friday 15th July. Cricket Averages 2011 Now that the cricket season is well underway, the averages are starting to come together. Leading the way in the batting department is Harry Wren (Year 7) with an average of 106. Also in Year 7 are Josh Woodgate-White (79) and Arthur Leaver (76). Dan Marsh RJ4 (Year 9) closely follows with 71, whilst Joe Payne (52) Harry Dawes (49) and Jamie Hemphrey (43) are leading the way for the 1st XI. Bowling wise, Aidan Fox's RJ2 (Year 7) hat trick against Sandwich Tech has helped him gain an average of 3.111 whilst Jack Diwell's RS1 (Yr13) 6 wickets and season best of 7-3 have helped him along to an average of 3! All averages and cricket results can be viewed on the Pupils Shared Area (in the Results folder within CAPA – PHE. Golfers Wanted! The PE department are putting together a golf team for beginners that play a little but haven’t got a handicap as a competition is coming up.
