The Gallatin County High School Senior Culminating Event (SCE) is designed to showcase the
student’s skills in research, speaking, oral and written communication, problem-solving and critical
thinking skills. It contributes to a strong senior year of challenging courses and practical
experiences that prepare students for the next step in work and further education.
Students will be matched with high school staff members according to career cluster focus of the
student (see the last two pages in this handbook for career cluster descriptions). The Senior
Culminating Event Committee will assign juniors to staff members by May of the junior year.
Gallatin County High School staff will mentor and advise the seniors throughout the Senior
Culminating Event. This handbook will assist you in planning and conducting your culminating
project. Remember, your mentor is there to help you, ask for assistance as needed.
This initiative is a way for you, as a Gallatin County High School senior, to show what you know
and are able to do. Make this your capstone activity for the year by doing the very best that you can
do; this is your time to shine. It is our sincere desire that all seniors will receive proficient or
distinguished scores on your three senior exit components. However, you are required to score an
apprentice or above on two of the three components.
2
DESCRIPTION
The Senior Culminating Event is a performance-based requirement consisting of three components:
professional profile, project report and oral presentation. It is an integral part of a student’s final
year of high school. Successful completion of the SCE is mandatory for graduation. This project is
to be completed outside of school and be based on the student’s career objective. School personnel
will be mentors to the seniors during the SCE. Students must pass all three areas of the SCE to
graduate. Students who fail any part of the SCE or who fail to turn in their work for any reason
must complete their project during summer school.
SCHOOL-WIDE OBJECTIVES
 Connects academics to the real world
 Enhances school to work programs and student's technological skills
 Focuses curriculum

 Is a multi-intelligence model
 Promotes cooperative learning
 Enhances school/community relations
 Fosters staff renewal
 Eliminates senioritis
PROJECT OBJECTIVES

10. Integrate academic and career/technical education
3
MAJOR PROJECT COMPONENTS/REQUIREMENTS
Three components
1. Professional Profile
2. Project Report
3. Oral Presentation
I. Professional Profile
A professional profile is a collection of work representing what a student has learned and
accomplished. You are responsible for the layout/organization of the profile and how it is
presented. A cover page, table of contents and section dividers are required. Your profile
must include the following documentation:
1. Letter to the judges
 Introduce yourself to the readers and invite them to look in your profile.
 Explain what you learned and anything you want the reader to know
before the presentation.
 No longer than two pages
 Use business letter format
 Explain the career you are interested in and why
 Explain what you have learned from this experience
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Letter of intent (already written and approved) (page 12)
Budget (page 13)
Resume
Application for a job (filled out)
Three letters of recommendation (page 14)
 Only one can be from a school employee
 Please send a thank you note to your references
7. Interview questions and answers
8. Career research (page 16)
9. Community Service documentation (12 hours required) (page 15)
10. Project log (this log is only for your 15 hour tangible project)
 Include dates, times, and a short description of your work
 Include names of people that you’ve consulted
11. Project report (page 5, pages 16-17)
The profile will allow you to present your work in a well organized, attractive and
professional manner. Your profile can be used when applying for jobs and/or admittance to
college. It can also be a wonderful memento of your high school career.
4
II. Project Report
In this component you will summarize your project, analyze the process that you followed
and report what you learned from the project. Discussion should include how your performance,
effort and decisions will directly affect your future career and educational opportunities. Project
selection must be connected to your career objective and be a “learning stretch” or a true
challenge.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Minimum of four pages (double spaced, 12 point font)
Supported with authentic records and documentation
Show evidence of thoughtful reflection
Describe each step of the project
Describe the difficulties encountered and the adjustments made
Discuss how the project could have been improved or made more meaningful
How to choose a project:
A senior project should allow you to do and learning something that is important to you.
The students who benefit and enjoy the activity the most are the students who have a
purpose and passion for their project. Seniors may choose a project and submit your Letter
of Intent at the end of the junior year or in September of your senior year. You have many
alternatives when choosing a project. The project must be connected to your career
objective. When selecting a project, you should have a limited knowledge in the area so
that a true learning stretch or true challenge is created. You will develop a tangible product
as a result of your project. You are responsible for all financial commitments. It is
important for your and your parents to discuss options and financial concerns when choosing
the project. Choose a project that will take a minimum of fifteen hours to complete.
5
III. Oral Presentation
Information about the project will be shared in an oral presentation at the end of the school
year. The content of the presentation should reveal what you have learned from your project
and how it affects your career goals.
Presentation Guidelines:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Panel will consist of 3-5 members consisting of faculty, business, community
It is imperative that all work be saved on a flash drive.
You will choose a fifteen minute time slot
Presentations will be from 8-10 minutes
Five minutes will be allowed for questions from panel
The presentation must be about your tangible project:
o Why you chose the project
o How does it relate to your career objective?
o Were there stumbling blocks
o What was the learning stretch
7. Use of technology should be evident
8. Video clips of you or your project are encouraged ( max. of one minute video)
9. Photographs, overheads, handouts can be used
10. Can only use one 5x7 note card
11. Dress as if you are interviewing for a job (Males: dress slacks, shirt/w collar, dress
shoes;
Females: Slacks or skirt and blouse)
6
Safety
Although students, when designing and working on their Senior Culminating Events, are
encouraged to challenge themselves in original and creative ways, certain hazardous
activities are prohibited. Any activity that could harm the student or other individuals is
forbidden. Gallatin County High School requires students to complete their project in
keeping with commonly recognized safety standards and procedures, and may deny
approval for any proposal that includes an activity judged to be unsafe or hazardous.
Cost
Despite its status as a graduation requirement, the exit project need not cost any more than a
typical school project would cost. The school expects students to work within their means.
Individual teachers and Gallatin County High School are not responsible for providing
supplies, materials or any other expense encountered during the planning or completion of
the Senior Culminating Event. Students are encouraged to develop a reasonably accurate
estimate of costs, and parents are asked to plan accordingly in order to help their child
graduate.
Transfer Students
Students who transfer into the Gallatin County Public School District during the fall
semester and are given senior standing will be required to complete all three components of
the culminating event.
Students who transfer into the District after the tenth day of the second semester and are
given senior standing will be exempt from completing the senior project and oral
presentation. Students will, however, be responsible for completing the professional profile.
Students with disabilities
Students receiving Special Education services may require accommodations and/or
modifications to complete their work. Student IEPs will detail how each student will meet
the SCE requirements. The plan may include input from the student, parent/guardian,
Special Education teacher, counselor, and general education teacher.
Intervention and Remediation
If you do not score apprentice or above on two of the three components, you will be able to
revise and resubmit your work. Your mentor will provide additional help as needed.
Completing all components of the SCE is necessary for graduation. Meeting a deadline
requires you to do more that simply turn work in on time; it also requires you to produce
quality work that meets school standards. Failure to meet these deadlines and standards may
jeopardize your participation in commencement.

I fully understand the importance of all deadline dates and am aware that all deadlines will be
strictly adhered to. I also realize that all components of the Senior Culminating Event are due ON
or BEFORE the designated deadline and that failure to meet any deadline results in failure of the
(SCE). I know that failed SCEs can only be made up during summer school, without exception.
All consequences of the project choice, production, or experience, unless otherwise stated, rest
solely with the student and parent. I also realize the project must in some way be related to the
student’s career objective and represent a “learning stretch.” S/he has my permission to complete

How to Write Your Letter of Intent
Your letter of intent will be read by your staff mentor to determine if your plan is an acceptable
Senior Culminating Event. This letter will be included in your final profile. It is suggested that the
more details and information you provide, the better chance your project will be accepted. Use the
following format in composing your letter of intent:
*typed
*single-spaced
*block format
*staple parental consent form (page 11) to letter or intent

(four spaces)
Dear Senior Culminating Event mentor,
In this paragraph, explain the following in detail. First, describe what project you have chosen to
do. Provide specific details concerning your approach, the manner in which you will conduct the
project, time limits, and the proposed end result. Then, explain what knowledge you have in this
area being very specific. Lastly, describe how this is a learning stretch for you.
(Copy this paragraph) I understand that the penalty for plagiarizing any aspect of the Senior
Culminating Event and for any attempts to cheat throughout the process will be an automatic failure
for my senior project. I understand that all deadlines must be met either on or before the specific
date; missed deadlines will result in failure for the senior project, and that failure of the Senior
Culminating Event will result in attending summer school to make up the work. I also understand
that I must follow through with the project as proposed. Furthermore, I understand that my
graduation depends on successful completion of my Senior Culminating Event requirements.
Sincerely,
