Job Description: Manager, Marketing & Communications
North York General Hospital Foundation is seeking a Manager, Marketing & Communications.
The Foundation’s mission is to raise and steward funds that enable North York General Hospital

research space.
Position Objective
The Manager, Marketing & Communications reports directly to the Vice President, Philanthropy
& Communications. The incumbent will provide the strategic leadership for, and oversight of, all
marketing and communications in support of North York General Foundation's mission and
annual fundraising efforts. S/he will develop strategic and integrated annual marketing plans
(fiscal April 1 – March 31) supported with detailed budgets, identified measurable targets and
performance goals, and then manage the timely implementation of programs and initiatives,
including ongoing assessment to ensure a maximum ROI is being achieved. They will build close
relationships and linkages with the key stakeholders in the hospital and the Foundation’s Board
of Governors.
Leadership Priorities



Engage the community in NYGH’s vision and mission, resulting in brand awareness to
drive philanthropic investment and attract "A" level volunteers to the Board and
campaign
Work with Corporate Communications and Public Affairs to raise top-of-mind awareness
for NYGH and increase the overall understanding of the hospital’s role,
accomplishments, future plans and priorities and demonstrate the value of investing in
these areas of need
Lead the digital strategy for brand awareness and stakeholder engagement



Demonstrate the relevance of NYGH as a leader in the areas of patient care, health care
innovation, technological leadership, and academic excellence to attract philanthropic
support
Assume oversight of current web redevelopment project
Apply proven and fundamental marketing approaches to all fundraising channels to
monitor and improve performance relative to the human and financial resources
invested
Roles and Responsibilities


Work with VP to create a clear strategic vision for the department
Manage and mentor the marketing and communications team (4) including setting
departmental objectives, prioritizing staff resources and activities and regularly
assessing performance, including the completion of scheduled performance reviews

Work with communications consultant to manage projects and strategies (campaign
brand refresh, web site redesign, special event communications strategies)

Oversee all aspects of marketing and communications including brand stewardship,
advertising, campaign brand refresh and roll out, promotion, market research, digital
media, case development, proposal writing, speeches, and donor impact reports
Writing the annual marketing & communication plan and budget with specific and
measurable goals and outcomes in functional areas of major gifts, events, annual
campaigns, planned giving, online/mobile giving and donor relations
Developing a strategic approach to digital marketing and solicitation with clear
measurable goals
Collaborating with Corporate Communications and Public Affairs on synergistic
marketing and communications priorities
Support fundraisers by providing the requisite marketing and communications counsel
and support through the delivery of specific tactics and by setting detailed KPIs,
including post-program analysis and course correction






Report on a monthly and annual basis against KPIs in a consistent and professional
format; to include budget, earned media, awareness, web, social share and other digital
metrics; and revenue generation
Become knowledgeable about the achievements, goals and needs of North York General
as well as the dominant trends of philanthropy

Seek out new knowledge, opportunities and partnerships to help achieve marketing and
communications goals

Manage other duties and responsibilities as assigned by VP or CEO
The Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will have built, managed and mentored teams, developed strategic and
integrated marketing plans supported with detailed budgets, identified measurable targets and
performance goals, and then managed the timely implementation of programs and initiatives,
including ongoing assessment to ensure a maximum ROI is being achieved. Ideally s/he will also
have an excellent depth of understanding in ‘digital’ channels. The candidate must be a strong
writer and editor due to the oversight of key fundraising vehicles including an annual report,
newsletters, proposals, reports, and speeches.
The role will be a combination of strategic thinking and hands-on execution and so our
successful candidate will have exceptional written and verbal communication skills. S/he must
be a team player with the ability to build effective relationships across the organization and with
internal and external audiences. Additionally the successful candidate will be able to translate
complex topics into easy-to-understand messages and material and to target messages and
themes to specific audience requirements.
Experience in health care and/or fundraising environment is preferred.
The successful candidate will also possess the following:

University degree, ideally in business, marketing, communications or in the social
sciences where relevance can be demonstrated
Significant experience (8-10 years) in marketing, communications, and/or public
relations, ideally with some exposure to the not-for-profit sector and health care
Demonstrated success in the development and implementation of strategic marketing
and communications plans, campaigns, projects and initiatives
Demonstrated writing at a high level
A successful track record of establishing, fostering and managing a clear strategic
direction for marketing in collaboration with key stakeholders
Experience in a management role leading a team in a complex environment as well as
proven experience in team performance assessment using appropriate metrics and
reviews as well as ongoing coaching and accountability processes
Extraordinarily creative and innovative mind coupled with a highly effective
communication style and persuasive abilities
Experience in budget development and management, marketing research and analytics,
media (paid and earned), direct mail, experiential and digital marketing (paid and social)
Able to establish and maintain productive relationships with a wide range of
stakeholders, including subordinates, colleagues, hospital staff and physicians, donors
and volunteers
A proven track record in brand management and an ability to develop key messaging for
the organization
