It started with a vision.
To this day, Mara Damaris isn't sure what it was that she touched to trigger her vision, but she knows
she saw what was to become of the world before anyone else did. The world was torn apart by war,
waged by a mysterious man, known to her as Jacob, and his minions - Sylar and Kellie. The war would
be devastating. Many people would die, and many more would wish they had. She saw Peter would
save the world… and then his brother would destroy it.
When it was over, she awoke in the hospital. She had always suspected that it was possible, but her
vision had put her into a coma. No stranger to starting over, Mara quickly caught up with what had
happened in her months gone. She discovered she had very little to come back to as far as... legitimate
work. It left her free to set about trying to figure out how to prevent the future from coming to pass.
She chose to stay with the Company. If the shadowy figurehead would be responsible for the hell to
come, she needed to be close enough to spot the first ripples before they could make waves. She did
make one change - she began using her given name again. Kaydence would quickly shorten to become a
new nickname entirely unlike how it began, much the same as her last chosen name.
It was Peter Petrelli that she chose to confide in, though she kept most of the details to herself and only
told him what she felt he needed to know about what would trigger the events leading up to the war.
Working together to prevent the end of the world as they knew it, they grew close. Perhaps they were
brought closer together by the very idea that they could fail and the world would fall down around their
heads.
It did.
Everything the psychometer had seen and more had come to pass and nothing she had done prevented
it. Realising the future was about to become a lot more bleak sparked a snap decision. Peter asked her
to marry him, and she accepted without hesitation, becoming Mrs. Kate Petrelli.
The war brought destruction. Devastation Kate couldn't even have predicted. The death of her
nephew, Monty Petrelli, killed something inside of her in a way that she would never confess.
Sometimes, she wonders if her interference helped to cause it. When the Company's agenda shifted
and all evolved were to be eradicated, Kate fled. No deal she could strike would have kept Peter safe,
and she couldn't allow herself to be a liability to be used against him. In hiding, she mentally prepared
herself for the changes that would come after her husband fulfilled his destiny and killed Sylar.
While her husband found solace in a bottle, she would paint, putting her visions - past and future - to
canvas. It was all Kate could do to keep herself together. She confronted Nathan shortly after he took
office, after he sent the human race to detainment camps. She begged him to stop. They both wanted
the same end, but she was sure this was not the means to achieve that. That night, Kate became
enemies with her brother-in-law and devoted herself full-time to consoling Peter and bringing him back
from the edge.
His strength, and hers, came from the resistance they began together. Branded terrorists by Nathan's
government, Peter and Kate set to work freeing as many humans, and evolved, as they could. While
killing became something of a necessary evil, it was a spoken rule that no attack was ever to be planned
against Peter's brother, though secretly Kate planned to kill him for his crimes if ever given the
opportunity.
It came as a surprise when Nathan himself showed up at her front door, knowing her husband was too
far away to call home. He told her he came with a message for Peter.
Message received and understood.
She had her golden opportunity, and she still didn't take it. She discovered her brother-in-law's deep,
dark secret. When she thought it was Nathan in full control of his actions, she had few qualms about
killing him. Knowing he's a prisoner in his own mind, however? That changed the entire plan
considerably. She quickly decided she didn't have it in her to kill Nathan anymore. Even after what the
Wolf in Nathan's Clothes had done to her. While the bruises were still fresh, before the blood and the
tears could dry, and with the anger keeping her senses sharp and her mind clear, she decided to seek
out someone else to help. Having heard the rumours and seen supposed footage with her own eyes,
Kate decided to find the elusive man known to her as Takezo Kensei. Much to her relief, he was eager to
strike up an alliance and she works closely with him. The war changed Kate a great deal and she tries to
hide her darker side from her husband as much as possible, for his sake. But she wasn't the only one
changed. Kate has a perfect hand print on her right upper arm - a radiation burn from a fight with Peter.
It remains unhealed as a reminder to them both as to what happens when their tempers flare and they
don't make the effort to keep them in check.
