The processes, laws and regulations, categories, integrity criteria, financial incentives, and
adaptive use for historic buildings in the United States are examined. The student will prepare a
rehabilitation research report integrating digital images and text. An introduction to digital
images and text/image integration programs is provided.
This class has been formatted to meet the FIDER historic preservation program requirements
and provide the student with a variety of learning experiences, including a case study and
research project. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
* Identify, through examination, the agencies and organizations involved in historic
preservation nationally (USA), in the State of California, and locally in Santa Clara County,
describing their respective roles.
* Identify and describe, through examination or case study, the criteria for listing as a historic
structure.
* Describe and critique, through examination or case study, the adaptive reuse of a historic
structure.
* Identify and describe, through examination or case study, the defining characteristics of a
historic style or assigned historic structure. For those characteristics, describe the level of

This course is intended to provide students with advanced professional experience working in
the profession of Interior Design. This course is West Valley College AA/AS degree and
certificate applicable.

How to Enroll:
1. Contact an interior design, architectural or related firm for internship position. This can
be a paid or non-paid position.
2. Obtain a letter (original, on compaly letterhead) from the principal, manager or
supervisor at the host firm, outlining your responsibilities as an intern. Give letter to the
Internship Coordinator for approval.
3. Once the position is approved, obtain an ADD slip from the Internship Coordinator.
Enroll in the course at the Admissions Office
How to Receive Credit
1. Keep an accurate daily record (time sheet) of the total hours you work, including date,
time (hours), and a brief description of the task(s) performed.
2. Upon completion of the minimum number of hours required for the respective units of
credit:
a. Have the manager or supervisor complete, sign and mail the "Performance
Evaluation Form" along with the time sheet to:

b. Write a thank-you note or letter to the employer.
c. Write a report about your internship experience, including an analysis and

course number and title, your name, name of host firm, and date. Include the
thank-you letter. You may also include drawings or photographs of work
accomplished, if appropriate. Submit to the Internship Coordinator no later than
finals week.
