GOLF VETERAN MANUEL DE LA TORRE INDUCTED INTO
THE WORLD GOLF TEACHERS HALL OF FAME
Ceremony to be Held January 27 at the Peabody Hotel
in Orlando, Florida as a Part of a Special Reception Honoring
Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers
New York, NY (January 13, 2005) – Manuel de la Torre of Milwaukee Country Club will
become the 12th inductee into the World Golf Teachers Hall of Fame during a ceremony hosted
on January 27, 2005 at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida. de la Torre, whose father was the
first Spanish golf professional in America, joins an elite class of the game’s greatest teachers elected by
GOLF MAGAZINE’s Top 100 Teachers and a panel of golf historians and journalists.
Hired in 1951 by the Milwaukee Country Club, de la Torre has served over five decades as a golf pro
and still teaches there today. With humility and selflessness, de la Torre has helped thousands of golfers
better enjoy the game they love and has become one of the game’s most beloved and respected
instructors. The PGA of America chose de la Torre as their first-ever National Teacher of the
Year in 1986.
De la Torre’s teaching philosophy derived from that of the late Ernest Jones. He is the foremost
practitioner of the Jones method, which tells golfers to uses a swinging motion, not a hitting motion.
As he takes his place among golf’s best teachers, he reveals his two core philosophies that haven’t
changed in over 50 years of teaching: First, never tell students to do something that can’t be overdone;
the more they do it, the better they should get. Second, never teach anything that he hasn’t tried
himself.
The World Golf Teachers Hall of Fame was founded in 1998 by GOLF MAGAZINE to ensure
that the theories and philosophies of the game’s greatest instructors live on. Criteria for
selection include unfailing dedication to students, knowledge shared with the teaching community,
demonstrated professionalism and at least 25 years of teaching professionality. The four charter
inductees were Tommy Armour, Percy Boomer, Ernest Jones, and Harvey Penick. They have been
followed by Davis Love, Jr., Bob Toski, Paul Runyan, John Jacobs, Jim Flick, Bill Strausbaugh, Jr. and last
year’s first female inductee, Peggy Kirk Bell.
