2. SHELL RECRUITMENT DAY
A Guide for Participants
Introduction
Congratulations on being invited to participate in a Shell Recruitment Day,
thank you for deciding to
take time out of your schedule to find out more about what Shell can offer.
This guide is designed to
provide an overview of the day, its purpose and the people who will be
involved during the day.
Why use Shell Recruitment Day?
Shell is at the heart of the energy and petrochemical business and one of
the worlds most successful companies. Developing our business successfully
into the 21st century and beyond will bring
tremendous challenges with it:
-
continually stretching what is possible technologically,
-
enhancing the range and quality of products and services that Shell
provides to
the 20 million customers we serve daily,
-
introducing ever more environmentally friendly technologies into our
existing core businesses of Exploration Production, Oil products and
Chemicals manufacturing,
-
developing and commercialising more sustainable forms of energy such as
solar or hydrogen power,
-
operating in increasingly global markets without losing the ability to
adapt to local circumstance and cultures.
The quality of Shell people has always been and remains a cornerstone of
the Shell Group’s strategy to
meet these challenges and our recruitment of individuals from universities
provides a key source of new
talent. For this reason Shell places great importance on the quality of its
recruitment process and has
designed the Shell Recruitment Day with two objectives:
-
Firstly to provide you with the best opportunity possible to demonstrate
the skills and qualities you
would bring to our businesses
-
Secondly to allow you a window onto the world of young professionals
within Shell.
What does Shell look for in Recruits?
Your academic record was one key factor in asking you to interview with us.
Our experience and
research on successful professionals has however shown that academic skills
alone are rarely sufficient
to be successful within a company as challenging, dynamic, diverse and
global as Shell. We have
Middle East SRD Briefing Pack
identified the following qualities as critical to high performance during
professionals’ early years in Shell and it is these qualities that you will
be assessed against at the Shell Recruitment Day
Capacity – Analysis of critical issues; Identifies links; Sees the wider
implications; Shows creativity;
Develops and assesses options for solutions
Achievement –Sets goals and targets; Enthusiastic & motivated; Deals
effectively with obstacles; Delivers Results; Deals with change &
uncertainty; Keen to drive own development and learning
Relationships – Clear communication; Influence others; Identifies key
stakeholders; Teamwork; Works effectively with different people; Supports
other team members
For those individuals wishing to pursue a technical career in Shell, we are
also interested in your technical ability.
[Please Note: Whilst a basic level of English is required to participate in
a Shell Recruitment Day, English
ability is not a selection criteria and those candidates who are not native
English
speakers:
a)
will
be
given additional time to prepare where appropriate, b) are welcome to bring a
dictionary to assist them.]
Who will be involved?
The following people are involved in a Shell Recruitment Day
Participants – It is important to note that the Shell Recruitment Day seeks
to profile participants’ qualities against the Capacity, Achievement, and
Relationships (CAR qualities outlined above and not to rank participants
against one another. It is therefore possible for all of the participants
attending any one Shell Recruitment Day to be successful.
Assessors – The Assessor team is made up of business leaders authorised to
make recruitment
decisions for their business. Assessors are often also the line managers
for recruits’ initial assignments.
It is the role of the Assessor to provide participants with the maximum
opportunity to demonstrate their
CAR qualities. Four Assessors will typically participate in each Shell
Recruitment Day.
Recruitment Co-ordinator - The Recruitment Co-ordinator makes sure that the
logistics for the Shell Recruitment Day run in a smooth timely fashion and
is your first point of call should you have any
questions during the day.
A Walk through the Shell Recruitment Day
The Day Itself
The Shell Recruitment Day will comprises the following exercises:
1. A case study,
2. A business scenario interview.
The exercises listed above are based around the type of problems and
challenges typically tackled by professionals within Shell and are designed
to provide participants with an opportunity to demonstrate their personal
strengths and abilities in relation to the criteria of Capacity,
Achievement, Relationships and Technical. Furthermore we believe that by
using a variety of different situations we give participants numerous
opportunities to demonstrate the qualities of Capacity, Achievement,
Relationships and Technical.
1) Case Study
This exercise is completed individually. Participants are assigned a role
within a fictitious company
Middle East SRD Briefing Pack
in an imaginary country and given an hour (one and a half hours if English
is not your first
language) to analyse approximately 20-25 documents related to the company’s
activities,
performance and environment. You will be given some background information
about the company including the various divisions and the country in which
it
operates
prior
to
the
Shell
Recruitment
Day
this information will form the basis for the Case Study. You will receive
the background information at the beginning of the day of the SRD and will
be given more information about your specific task.
On completion of the preparation time participants are required to brief
two Assessors on the:
- issues facing the company and the key actions you propose to take,
- potential implications for the company’s short, medium and long term
strategy and direction.
This initial briefing of five minutes is then followed by a 20-minute
discussion around the issues
identified and your proposed actions. You will be expected to outline the
rationale for your proposals
and be able to discuss the topic in a broader context, however, detailed
technical knowledge is
not required.
During this exercise we will be observing the elements of
Capacity, Achievement and Relationships.
2) Business Scenario Interview
There are two sections to this exercise, both of which last 20 minutes. The
first
section
is
where
participants are given a list of four business relevant problems from which
to
choose
one
and
will
analyse the problem and think about potential solutions. Participants will
have
15
minutes
of
preparation time after which they will meet with two Assessors who will ask
them questions about their analysis. Participants are not expected to be an
expert
in
the
subject
area,
the
Assessors
will
be
interested in your ideas on how you would manage the topic, your purpose,
actions and your ability to support your plan. Participants will not be
required to deliver a formal presentation.
In the next section, they are are asked to provide examples of situations
in which they have worked as a team and also how they have learnt or
developed a new skill.
What Happens Next?
At the end of the day the Assessors meet to review the extent to which
participants demonstrated the
Capacity, Achievement, Relationship throughout the day. This profile is
then
used to make a decision on whether participants successfully completed the
Shell
Recruitment
Day.
Feedback will be given to the candidates by telephone over the next few
days.
In addition participants are asked for their feedback on the process. This
feedback is anonymous
and has no impact on employment decisions.
Finally
We hope that you will enjoy our Shell Recruitment Day and we look forward
to meeting you.
