High Hopes for Israeli Biological Computer on Chip
A pioneering biological computer – composed entirely of DNA molecules and
enzymes built on a gold-coated chip – has been developed by scientists at
the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, THE JERUSALEM POST
reported. While the original prototype could accept up to 765 different
programs, the new computer accommodates up to a billion; this increase
represents a dramatic advance in terms of the potential mathematical
operations and complexity of problems that may be solved using a biological
computer. The results open a wide variety of applications in data encryption
and cancer diagnosis.

Israel Ranks High in Technology Report
Israel was ranked 18 out of 104 countries in the World Economic
Forum's Global Information Technology 2004-2005 Report. The
report assesses the impact of information and communication
technology (ICT) on the development and competitiveness of
nations. Israel scored highly in the levels of technological
sophistication, the quality of scientific research institutions, and the
availability of venture capital and mobile phone penetration.
Singapore was ranked as the top economy in exploiting global ICT
developments, ahead of Iceland and Finland. According to the report,
the United States, ranked fifth.

B.G. Negev Technologies Signs Deal to Develop Heart
Scaffolds
B.G. Negev Technologies, the commercial arm of the University, recently
signed an agreement with BioLineRx Ltd., Israel’s leading specialized drug
development company, for the development of BL-1040, an injectible
scaffold that reduces cardiac damage after a heart attack. This scaffold
enhances the mechanical strength of the heart muscle during recovery and
repair, reduces the size of the scar after the heart attack and may stimulate
the growth of new blood vessels and encourage cardiac regeneration. In
experimental heart attack models, the polymer has been shown to improve
outcome, resulting in reduced cardiac dysfunction and reduced mortality.
